Hi, I translated some .svg files and I can't figure out how to upload them as translations. I tried even Jarry1250's Toolserver Tools but I got some error--Γιαγκούλας (talk) 02:50, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First, change the name; if they're translated into Greek, add "-gk" or "-el" or "-ελ" to the main part of the filename (right before the ".svg"). If by translating you mean you used the http://toolserver.org/~jarry/svgtranslate/ tool, then this has several known errors, but the tool author isn't doing anything about them until he completely rewrites the tool. If there are SVG syntax errors, I could probably diagnose the problems if I could see the files, or you could feed it to the W3C validator, or to Commons:SVG Check... Fixed one file, and deleted another that was a copyright violation. The Wizard has a limited set of licensing options, so some do need to be added later (or use Commons:Upload instead). [edit]

Hello,

Background

First off, I am delighted to see that Wikimedia has done a great deal to make the upload procedure more "friendly" (both in terms of "user-friendly" and "inviting"). I think it is fair if I am honest about this up front: the way things were done on Wikimedia in the past have frustrated and angered me in multiple occasions (emails that consistently vanished, no response to questions or cries for help), to the point where I got so upset that I had had enough, and I quit contributing to both Wikimedia and Wikipedia altogether. I slowly got more involved again with Wikipedia when I recently discovered the pages about Queensrÿche were in dire need of improvement, and my efforts to contribute in that respect have made me reconsider my stance on contributing. Still, I am still extremely reluctant to upload anything to Wikimedia other than "own work", simply because I dread having to go through the stress of trying to get OTRS approval (which I did get on certain occasions; I do know the procedure the way it used to be).

So with renewed energy, I would like to try going through the motions once more, in hopes of things running more smoothly this time. Now, I do not ask for an apology; what's passed is past and as I noted, Wikimedia seems to have done their very best to improve things, making me much more optimistic, and hopefully I am confirmed in this. What I do ask for, and I believe what would help me greatly, is to know exactly what is expected from me to bring this to a success. Maybe it helps me gain enough confidence again for the future.

Question

I would like to ask you for your help with the following: Queensrÿche has a logo, known as the Tri-Ryche. It was never copyrighted because for a long time (mid and late 80s, early 90s) it was unclear who designed the logo. It was eventually attributed to Wes Griswold. What I would like to do is upload one or more versions of this not-copyrighted logo.

  • Firstly, it may have a similar nature as the New Orleans Saints Fleur-de-lis logo, in which case it would not meet the Threshold of originality. Is this correct?
  • Next, I assume I need to demonstrate the logo is indeed not copyrighted, and to find out to what extent it is or is not trademarked. One possibility I see, is that I email the attorney of the Tri-Ryche Corporation, the company responsible for the publishing rights of Queensrÿche's assets. Should I do this?
  • Then the actual logo. I will make my own transparent PNG with a plain black drawing of the logo. Can I credit this as "Wes Griswold. Uploaded by Eddyspeeder." ? In addition, is written permission from Mr. Griswold preferred and or required?
  • Lastly, I also think it would be good to upload the latest iteration of the logo. Would this require permission of the designer who made this version, or because the design is an alteration of a not-copyrighted logo it is also not copyrighted and no permission is necessary? In addition, would written permission from the designer be preferred/required?

For all possible communications (e.g., the attorney, Mr. Griswold, and the designer of the latest iteration of the logo) please specify exactly what I should request of this person, in what form, and to whom at Wikimedia I should direct this information. Alternatively, please let me know what I should do instead. Of course, with every step, you may point me to the appropriate manual pages. --Eddyspeeder (talk) 17:43, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, almost nothing created in the United States since 1978 which passes a "threshold of originality" and does not primarily serve a "utilitarian" purpose (and which was not created by federal government employee) can be considered uncopyrighted unless there's an explicit release or disclaimer. Even if the basic unadorned outline shape is not considered to pass the threshold of originality, people's elaborate artistic variations of it certainly would. This is not a simple matter, and you might want to take it to Commons:Village pump/Copyright‎, where people with expertise would be more likely to see it... AnonMoos (talk) 18:49, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I will try that. Section may be closed and archived. --Eddyspeeder (talk) 13:53, 14 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

British dust jackets

[edit]

Hi, A copyright-based question for you. Am I able to upload a photograph of a book cover, showing the original artwork, from a book published in the UK in 1920? I do not know who the artist was, but the author of the book died in 1937, if that makes any difference. (I presume I can, as you seem to have a copy of the full novel on the site: File:BulldogDrummondSapper.djvu, or have I misunderstood the difference between the cover artwork and the book text?) Many thanks - SchroCat (talk) 16:35, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

AFAIK dust jackets are normally designed by someone from the publisher, and a name would normally be identified on the dust jacket itself. At any rate the copyright will be separate from the book unless the author actually designed it. If you're just going from a photo then you're probably stuck, because this info is hard to find without access to the physical item. Rd232 (talk) 12:31, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK - I can get hold of the info at some point (a trip to the British Library beckons). That leads to a couple of supplementary questions:
  • What happens if the information isn't on the jacket? Would it fall into the 50 years after publication bracket?
  • If the name is on there, is this a life +70 years thing?
  • What if the name is there, but there is no locatable info about when the artist died?
Many thanks indeed for your help! - SchroCat (talk) 14:59, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. If the name is not there, it can probably be considered an anonymous work, in which case the term would be 70 years after publication (I think). If the name is there, the term depends on the deathyear - see Commons:CRTUK#Known_author. If the name is there but no deathyear is known - well that's the worst case. If you have at least a birthyear you can assign a reasonably long lifespan and see where that gets you; eg if they were born in 1850 you could assume 80 year lifespan and deathyear 1930 or earlier, which would work for life+70. Fortunately at least the URAA complications of US copyright are avoided here because publication is before 1923 - that makes everything even more complicated! :) Rd232 (talk) 16:04, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks: I'll see what I can do about getting the artist details and take it from there. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 16:56, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Converting Flash files

[edit]

Hi, would I be able to convert an Adobe Flash to a free file type so it can be used on Wikipedia?--Dom497 (talk) 19:52, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Depends greatly on what you want to convert it to -- raster, vector, animated, non-animated? AnonMoos (talk) 19:56, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I want to create an interactive user page so by using flash, I can do that. So, I would want it animated.--Dom497 (talk) 19:59, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Interactivity is one thing that will not translate very well. Scripting is very limited in the Wikipedia/Wikimedia realm -- there are system scripts, and "gadgets" that you can sign up for in your user preferences, but the ability of one ordinary user to be able to cause another user to run user-authored script code is intentionally pretty much non-existent. You could go nuts with an Animated SVG, but other people would not be able to see the interactivity unless they have a SMIL-aware SVG viewer... AnonMoos (talk) 20:11, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So is there a way to get a flash file on wikipedia?--Dom497 (talk) 20:13, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No. Even FLV Flash video isn't supported (Commons:UNSUPPORTED#Unsupported_file_types), never mind Flash scripting. Rd232 (talk) 08:09, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am not the uploader of this picture but I talked with him (PJPH). This contributor is not sure about the licence of this picture (me either). So he said me (in French) that he got this picture from a set of documents transmitted by one of his grandparent. What do you think? I posted this message to start the discussion. I will inform PJPH of this. Pamputt (talk) 06:44, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If he's the heir to the photographer, he can use a template such as {{PD-heirs}} or {{CC-BY-SA-3.0-heirs}}. In certain cases, ownership of negatives can be presumptive evidence that you own copyright to the images in the negatives, but the same does not apply to photographs themselves... AnonMoos (talk) 11:00, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If it's the only known copy of the photo, inheritance of that would normally bring inheritance of the attached copyright in the absence of any agreement to the contrary. Problems might theoretically arise if there is more than one heir and one of the heirs who has access to the photo but only partial ownership wants to freely license it; permission from all the heirs would be needed. Rd232 (talk) 11:21, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings,

I am about to upload a photograph of my father "[Marton]" who has a Wikipedia entry in English. As one of two sons of his, the sole inheritors of his work, myself, Pier Marton, and my brother, Yves Marton have agreed together to let a particular self-portrait my father took of himself enter the public domain so that it could be used on the Wikipedia entry.

Please let me know a.s.a.p. whether there are issues to clear up before uploading my file. Thank you. Pier Marton (barkilehet) P.S.: As there is a certain deadline I am considering, I may upload it but of course will take it down, if there is any issue. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barkilehet (talk • contribs) 21:09, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, thanks for your planned contribution. You should be able to apply {{PD-heirs}} to the upload, but it would be best to confirm via email to COM:OTRS that both you and your brother as sole heirs agree to the PD release. You can do this after upload (it will take a while to get processed, but long-term it helps give a secure foundation to the PD release). Rd232 (talk) 23:41, 10 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your guidance. As this is my first time applying for the rights to upload my father's work, I am a bit nervous, but I did send an e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org confirming that I am one of two heirs and have asked my brother to do the same. Hopefully all of these e-mails will be consolidated easily. When I did the upload, I did not know about the {{PD-heirs}} but I did list it as Template:Heir. Let's hope all goes smoothly. Again, thank you!

OK. No need to be nervous! You've done well trying to be as clear as possible, and of course asking for help :). I've tidied up File:ErvinMartonWikiCirca1940.png a bit, the rest is up to OTRS (i.e. volunteers with access to the email system). This can take around a month, but if it goes much beyond that, you can try the Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard to get someone's attention. PS If you're considering uploading other files, do consider fully the consequences of releasing those works to the public domain (eg it means anyone can use them commercially for free). Otherwise you can upload files to Wikipedia as "fair use" for use on Wikipedia only (en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard). regards, Rd232 (talk) 00:51, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, thanks in advance for your willingness to contribute this valuable content. When you upload multiple files at once and get to the "Describe" step, the Upload Wizard gives you the option of copying the fields you'd like from the description of the first file to the rest of the files. If you're unsure, it might be a good idea to upload just one or two files first and ask for feedback on those uploads. Also keep in mind that photographs of sculptures involve two sets of copyright: that of the sculptor (there should be no issues there in this case) and that of the photographer. Other text that appears states "The latitude needs to be between -90 and 90." and "The longitude needs to be between -180 and 180." I am entering "0º 56' 11"" for latitude, which is between -90 and 90 and "38º 03' 47"" for longitude, which is between -180 and 180. Perhaps the form requires the decimal equivalent, but that is not indicated and not the format that Google Earth provides. -AndrewDressel (talk) 17:13, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Location coordinates must be given in decimal form. I agree that this could be spelled out more clearly, but the negative sign should be a clue, as DMS notation uses compass headings rather than signs. You can use tools:~geohack to convert. I don't know about Google Earth, but Google Maps will put the decimal coordinates in the search box if you right click on a location and select "What's here?"
  • 0° 56' 11" N, 38° 3' 47" E (northeast of Archers Post, Kenya) is 0.936389, 38.063056
  • 0° 56' 11" S, 38° 3' 47" E (in Mwingi, Kenya) is -0.936389, 38.063056
  • 0° 56' 11" N, 38° 3' 47" W (in the North Atlantic off the coast of Brazil) is 0.936389, -38.063056
  • 0° 56' 11" S, 38° 3' 47" W (in the South Atlantic off the coast of Brazil) is -0.936389, -38.063056

Is there a problem, or is it just me?

[edit]

Upload Wizard seems to have "got stuck" ! It says it's finished uploading the file, but it's not moving on to the release rights stage. Been sitting here watching the little thingie spin round and round in the box which still says "uploading" . Which one of its messages is the lie? ;P File is "Boa eating rabbit (close-up).ogg", if that helps anyone find out what it's doing ... ThatPeskyCommoner (talk) 19:35, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kal Foster

[edit]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonas Morais Cardoso (talk • contribs) 13:17, 18 January 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

How do I update an existing image

[edit]

I have asked this question in the Teahouse and Gog knows where else and all I get is people talking round the subject, can someone please just tell me how, I replace an existing image, cut the crap, just tell me. Simple instructions will do just nicely, no jargon and no bullsh1t! Can anyone help?Sheffno1gunner (talk) 04:22, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to replace an image on commons you can just click the 'upload new version' link on the image page. If you want to change one in wikipedia just edit the article and replace the old file name with the new one: File:new image name.jpg --Canoe1967 (talk) 06:41, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

image showing in negative

[edit]

Hello, I have tried to upload the poster of my film in .jpg format. The file is saved at 72 dpi at 1200 x 800 and it's showing in negative in preview, and at Commons. Is the file size too large? Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nukeage (talk • contribs) 04:25, 20 January 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]

Is the image in CMYK color mode (your graphics program should tell you)? Saving it as RGB might make it work. Also, film posters are often problematic concerning copyright. Are you the copyright holder of the poster? That means: did you design it and take any photograph that might have been used on the poster? If not, you would need permission from every artist whose work was used, photographer, designer, etc., to release the image under a free license. --rimshottalk 18:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About uploaded pictures

[edit]

To whom it may concern:

I am making a wikipedia for a sailor and engineer, Horacio Carabelli and have written an article and uploaded some pictures. Most of the pictures have been taken by me and a couple by my brother´s team so those aren´t any problem. However, my sister in law asked me to upload others, I told her about copyrights and that she could only send me pictures taken by them but I looked for the pictures in some books and confirmed the picture was not taken by them and may have a copyright so I took it from the wiki page and would like to take it from wikipedia as it is not as I was told. I would be very thankful if you could please tell me what I must do in order to withdraw this picture:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/Brasil_1_Inport_Race.JPG

Also, one of the pictures I uploaded must be turned 90 degrees. I would like to know if the possiblity of doing that exists within wikipedia or if I have delete it and upload it once more, in which case I would once more need to know how to delete a contribution.

Thank you very much in advance,

Patricia Carabelli — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pattycarabelli (talk • contribs) 2013-01-20T15:10:57 (UTC)

File:Brasil 1 Inport Race.JPG has been deleted by INeverCry as a copyright violation.
File:Horacio Carabelli y Luis Chiaparro. Snipe Junior World Championship..JPG needs rotation by 90 degrees. There is a bot, Rotatebot, which rotates images automatically. I added {{rotate|90}}, which instructs the bot to rotate the image. All you need to do now is to wait. --Stefan4 (talk) 17:43, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hepatitis C - replacing picture with US Data with local/Slovenian contents

[edit]

Instead of the figure File:Hepatitis_C_infection_by_source_(CDC)_-_en.svg I am thinking of inserting a figure http://candidates2003.emcdda.europa.eu/en/images/fig10-en.jpg from EU 2003 report http://candidates2003.emcdda.europa.eu/en/page32-en.html. I assume - but have not checked - that one can do it, probably (again I do not know the rules) citing the source while doing so.

The figure is possibly outdated (2003) and any suggestions on how to treat a similar case in the future would be appreciated.

TiA -- 05:46, 22 January 2013‎ User:SmozBleda

Don't overwrite the SVG file, if that's what you're talking about. The two images are completely different, one by geography, one by cause of infection. Factual data can't be copyrighted, but the JPEG map graphic cannot be uploaded unless it is explicitly released under a free license... AnonMoos (talk) 01:02, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Of course I do not intend to replace the picture in the original EN text. I am localizing the article to Slovenian and I thought the suggested picture would be more interesting for Slovenian readers. Re "explicitely released under a free license": I will see what the emcdda page has to say about it.

Thanks! -- 05:07, 23 January 2013‎ User:SmozBleda

Server Error

[edit]

I tried to upload 6 jpeg images at once. when doing the upload, I get feedback "Internal error: Server failed to store temporary file.". Are there any known problems with the servers at the moment, or did I do anything wrong?

File names are e.g. Pesenbachtal_CB001.JPG (without file type suffix). The comments are identical for some of the images, what shouldn't matter.

Did also try

  • file names without underscore
  • images resized (so that jpeg file is <200 KB instead of 5MB)
  • uploading one single image

none of these tries did succeed.

Bimminger (talk) 21:15, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

rcproject

[edit]

I tried to upload a video clip that I edited on iVideo. I was given an error message that the Wiki does not accept files with the extension .rcproject. Does anyone know how I can convert the file to an acceptable format? I could try to edit it on iPhoto, but I am not even sure how to save the trimmed video there. I don't want to load the unedited video, since it is too long and only a brief segment is relevant. Thanks. Rlendog (talk) 02:16, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure about the process in Mac. But it seems you have to export the video to mp4 or so and then convert it to ogg or webm. See Help:Converting_video#Tools_for_Macs for this purpose. --McZusatz (talk) 02:25, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I got to the point of being able to convert to .mov. Hopefully I will be able to get this to .ogg. Rlendog (talk) 15:31, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Let me know if there is any problem. --McZusatz (talk) 17:54, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I fix this? It said this when I tried to upload a file: There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted.

You should not recreate previously deleted files yourself. If you have a good reason to think that the file should not have been deleted, you may ask for it to be restored. But before you do, you need to familiarize yourself with what this project is about. Despite stating that you understand that you cannot upload non-free photos grabbed from the Internet, you still uploaded half a dozen such files with completely made-up claims that the authors had approved publication under free licenses. If you continue to do that, or if you attempt to recreate previously deleted files yourself, you are very, very likely to be blocked again. If you're not sure if a file can be hosted on Commons, please ask before uploading it. LX (talk, contribs) 12:05, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Watermarks

[edit]

Please tell me how to remove watermarks from pictures. Is any software other than Photoshop can do this.---zeeyanketu talk to me 22:33, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Probably GIMP, but I can't advise you on the details of the techniques to be used. What we have seems to be at Commons:Watermarks#How_to_remove_watermarks... AnonMoos (talk) 23:00, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
GIMP can do this with the clone brush but its object removal technology is just not on par with Photoshop's, so it requires more effort and results may be inferiour. You may upload files and tag them with {{Watermark}} to request that someone else remove the watermark. If you do this I recommend leaving a message at Commons:Graphics lab to request attention, since there is a backlog in this area. Dcoetzee (talk) 21:03, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
