Trains
[edit]TOPS units
[edit]This section applies to any train which has a standard TOPS code - pretty much any diesel or electic locomotive or multiple unit which was operating on the railway in 1973 or was built since. Any TOPS unit can be categorised using the {{Ukt}} template. All trains should be in four types of categories:
- Class by operator;
- Class by livery;
- Class by line;
- Operator by line.
For instance, File:Ebbsfleet International railway station MMB 03 395018.jpg is in categories Category:British Rail Class 395s of Southeastern, Category:British Rail Class 395s in Southeastern Highspeed livery, Category:British Rail Class 395s on High Speed 1 and Category:Trains of Southeastern on High Speed 1.
Additionally, photos of train interiors should be in categories
- Class interiors
- Train interiors of operator
- Standard/first class train interiors of the United Kingdom.
Thus, in addition to the four standard train categories, File:350243 x DMSO Vehicle Standard Class Interior.JPG is also in Category:British Rail Class 350 interiors, Category:Train interiors of London Midland and Category:Standard class train interiors of the United Kingdom.
It is always best to use the {{Ukt}} template for categorisation, as it can add the categories easily, but please remember to use it via subst!
As an example, to get the four categories from File:Ebbsfleet International railway station MMB 03 395018.jpg, you would use the following syntax:
- {{subst:ukt|395|018|Southeastern|Southeastern Highspeed|High Speed 1}}
And to get the seven categories for File:350243 x DMSO Vehicle Standard Class Interior.JPG, you would use:
- {{subst:ukt|350|243|London Midland|London Midland|West Coast Main Line|i}}
The extra "i" parameter here tells the template to add the standard-class internal categories. If first class, use "1", and if it's the cab use "x".
BR Coaching Stock
[edit]BR coaching stock follows a similar pattern, but using the {{Ukc}} template.
Line definitions
[edit]This table lists all UK rail lines, and how they are defined on Commons. Termini gives the end-points of the route; Via tells you which way it goes between the end points; and Exclusions tells you which bits are explicitly not considered part of that line, even if they might be in common parlance. Footnotes are used to explain junction locations, otherwise all places referred to are stations.

Category structure
[edit]As noted above, all train photos should be in at least four categories:
- British Rail Class [#]s of [Operator], eg Category:British Rail Class 390s of Virgin Trains;
- British Rail Class [#]s in [Livery], eg Category:British Rail Class 390s in Virgin Trains livery;
- British Rail Class [#]s on [Line], eg Category:British Rail Class 390s on the West Coast Main Line;
- Trains of [Operator] on [Line], eg Category:Trains of Virgin Trains on the West Coast Main Line;
and train interiors are then in a further three categories:
- Train interiors of British Rail Class [#]s, eg Category:Train interiors of British Rail Class 390s;
- Train interiors of [Operator], eg Category:Train interiors of Virgin Trains;
- And one of:
These categories are arranged in category trees by class, by line, by livery and by operator. Here is a sample category tree by class:
- Category:British Rail Class 165
Here is a sample category tree by operator:
- Category:First Great Western
Here is a sample category tree by line:
Most of the above categories (with the exception of the standard class, first class and driving cab categories, train operator by livery and the overall line, operator and class categories) can be generated using templates (always subst!). Below is a table showing usage. All items in the "Example" column are from one of the category trees above, and all items in the "Usage" column show how to
