Introduction
[edit]As the Dutch colonies became countries the Colonial Institute became the Royal Tropics Institute or KIT. The focus was broadened to all of the tropics and this was also reflected in its museum, its theatre and its library. The KIT became an independent centre of knowledge and expertise in the areas of international and intercultural cooperation, operating at the interface between theory and practice and between policy and implementation. The Institute contributes to sustainable development, poverty alleviation and cultural preservation and exchange.
KIT is a not-for-profit organisation and it works both in the private and the public sector in collaboration with partners in the Netherlands and abroad. As a consequence there is a coming and going of people to the KIT for training and for the projects KIT is involved in. Conservators of museums are trained in Amsterdam and conservators of the Tropenmuseum help out with cataloguing and preserving collections of museums in the tropics.
