Files by Stephen Cribb (1875-1963) marked as PD-UK-Gov

[edit]

This is a relisting of images previously nominated under Commons:Deletion requests/Files by Stephen Cribb (1875-1963), which was closed as Procedural Keep. These two images have been imported from the Imperial War Museum where they are available on IWM's non-commercial licence. IWM's archive includes files from a number of sources. Some were created by UK government employees and are subject to Crown Copyright (copyright free 50 years after creation) others are donations to the museum from private collections (normal copyright restrictions apply to these private images).

IWM's database identifies the Orion image as being created by Stephen Cribb of Southsea. The Thunderer image is recorded in IWM's database as author unknown but the image includes a note on the bottom right corner identifying S Cribb, Southsea.

Joseph Stephen Cribb is recorded as a press photographer from Southsea in Portsmouth, England. He is attributed as the author of many images taken in the Portsmouth area in the early 20th century, with a particular focus on ships and dockyards. From census and death records at FamilySearch, I have confirmed that he died in 1963 (See Wikidata entry). Based on the date of death the copyright on his works will expire in 2033, allowing upload on 1 January 2034. However, there may be other grounds as to why his works have entered the public domain or can otherwise be retained here under a different licence.

It is possible that he was employed by the UK government at some point to take official images but I can't see any evidence for it. There are 16 images in the IWM database attributed to Stephen Cribb of Southsea and an unknown number of others like the Thunderer one above where S Cribb is named on the image only. Where other official photographers have operated, the IWM normally has much larger archives of their official images. The small number here is anecdotal evidence that these may be private donations to the museum rather than a government collection.

It would be welcome if someone is able to establish a justification for why Crown Copyright applies here. Otherwise, we will have to reupload these in 2034. --From Hill To Shore (talk) 12:19, 30 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
