I hate it when robots over-ride human judgement. There is a robot that slaps a speedy deletion tag on every image from flickr that uses its publci domain mark, instead of cc0. There are two really serious problems with how this robot operates.

That stupid robot slapped a speedy deletion tag on this image.

Background

Maybe most people who download flickr images know this, now. When flickr introduced support for public domain, some years ago, they introduced two different licenses. One was intended for flickr uploaders to apply to images they took themselves. The other was for images the flickr uploader got access to, for which they had a good faith belief were in the public domain. So, the flickr uploader would apply it to images they believed were taken by an employee of a US Federal agency, or that they believed were too old to be under copyright.

Unfortunately flickr users don't know this. Even those who are professional publicists, or equivalent, who you think might know this, don't know this. So a very large fraction of the images uploaded to flickr with a public domain mark - what flickr wants people to use for images taken by others, good faith flickr uploaders apply to their own image. It would be counter-intuitive to do anything else.

The WMF is a very wealthy non-profit. It employs a software team. It is long past the time when those developers should have ensured there was an easy and convenient way to add trusted flickr contributors, whose images are under a Public Domain Mark, to a white list. This photographer, Roger Puta is very well known, in transit circles, because, for decades he took over 10,000 historic photos of rail and rapid transit vehicles. His images are very widely re-used. He died at a relatively young age, and his literary executor put all of his images in the public domain.

So, I repeat, his images should be on that white list. I have called for this white list at least a dozen times. Where are the WMF's software developers? Why aren't they working to ease the burden of contributors, in obvious places like this?

@Geo Swan WTF? Perhaps you should have mentioned that this was a procedural nomination to challenge a speedy deletion. Brianjd (talk) 09:36, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Brianjd Ok, happy now. Geo Swan (talk) 10:05, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WTF? (again) This file has a VRT tag. Surely it’s past time to close this DR? Brianjd (talk) 11:27, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
