seems like a guess to me. Please provide more information about your thesis.

Not a guess: Commons Policy. (Commons:Derivative works) Here is my thesis:
  1. All of these files are photographs of rings.
  2. Rings may be copyrighted works.
  3. A photograph of a copyrighted work is a Commons:Derivative work
  4. None of these files provide evidence that the rings themselves are freely licensed or PD
