- The underlying image is not necessarily free in the UK (there is conditionality involved in a UK anonymity claim), and under UK law Bridgeman's reproduction of it may well introduce a new, additional copyright; and the original may well not be free in the US either, thus their warning tag on the webpage. - This image has been kept earlier today, however this argument has not fully been explored previously. Another thing: Could you refrain from deleting valid licenses from images which have just been kept per that license simply because you disagree? As you can see in my reasoning in keeping the file basic research has been done and the author being unknown is not by a lack of looking into it. Basvb (talk) 23:22, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
- Basvb, this was actually exactly the argument I put above originally on 26 April (!), which you examined yesterday: have a look at the text above ("no valid US tag is provided... an anonymous, unpublished image is protected for 120 years after the date of creation in the US, so would be under copyright in the US until 2034.") To state the obvious, images on the Commons require both a US and UK tag - at the moment the image doesn't have a valid US tag; if the image is anonymous and there is no evidence of it being originally published with the creator's consent, then it is still under copyright in the US.
- In terms of the UK tag, take another look at the tag. You'll see that there's a key phrase in it, which says " If you wish to rely on it, please specify in the image description the research you have carried out to find who the author was." This is an important part of UK copyright law, as someone (e.g. an editor here) using a claim of anonymity in the UK must demonstrate that "the author cannot be ascertained by reasonable enquiry" - for example by conducting research, asking the original source of the image where they acquired it, etc., and showing what steps they took to get to that conclusion (e.g. what were the "multiple sources" checked? Did you email any companies currently offering the image for sale? etc.). This is different (I believe) from the situation in the Netherlands and much of Europe, which doesn't require this to be done..
- The British Academy gives some useful advice here in pleasantly plain English (!) (see here, section 8). They note that "the potential user should be able to demonstrate that serious efforts have been made in good faith to locate and contact the rights owner, including all reasonably available avenues of inquiry, before any use of the work not already permitted by law... may be made." There's a useful list of examples in that section to illustrate what this might mean.
- You've restored the tag, but still haven't provided this information, which is essential for the claim. That's important legally. I've no problem in principle with you adding a UK-anonymous tag to this file, but if you do so, you do need to follow the Commons rules and specify what research you undertook in the image description. The copyright tag seems wrong, the file is rather non-free, probably with fair use: This is the logo and not the coat of arms ("Wappen"). The university's charter ("Grundordnung") [2] explicitly states that the coat of arms ("Wappen") is the old seal showing the founders Friedrich and Alexander, which is depicted in [3]. ADD COMMENT: The university has a page on en.wikipedia since 2004 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temuco_Catholic_University) and has a page on other wikipedias as well. On the german wikipedia it has LogoUCT.jpg and This logo and was uploaded in 2014-09. The logo could be considered {{PD-ineligible}} after all. If it's still a copyvio in your eyes the logo should be transfered to the wiki sites that have fair use...

I actually requested this vectorization last year but forgot it was made because it took a while (see Commons:Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop/Archive/2014#Request for vectorization of File:Imevisión.jpg. Generally: Unlikely also that these symbols were digitized in there present form prior to 1983 (when "Internet" was available only for a few institutions, TCP/IP was standardized in 1982) Their creation date could be quite recent, maybe not even by an employee of the Brazilian government.

This photograph has been taken at an exhibition at Qatar and is a derived work of the depicted artwork by Takashi Murakami. Unfortunately, there is no freedom of panorama in Qatar. - You're absolutely wrong, Chris, and you know it. While works of the US government are generally free of copyright, this is a work of a political subdivision of the State of California. Works of California government are not exempt from copyright -- see sites like

which demonstrate that the state of California, local governments in California, and government agencies in California all claim copyrights to their work. Under US copyright law, recent works are not required to carry copyright notices, so the fact that there is no notice on the front of the ticket is irrelevant. - Obviously you've found a few exceptions in a State government that represents the 8th largest economy in the world, so I'm not terribly surprised. You still haven't not provided evidence that this image is protected. Furthermore, I've been told by city officials that it is not protected. But when I inquired about getting proof of that, I was told that while they are fine with the images being available, they do not see a reason to encourage distribution. - That's not the way Commons works, Chris, and you're experienced enough to know that. You uploaded the image with the inaccurate claim that you were the copyright holder. When that fell through, you made a claim about the governing law that was disproved. You can't just upload content here and demand that other editors do your work for you. - Actually, no, which rights and how to apply them is something that I don't understand very well on Commons. It sounds like the rights needs to be changed, so I'm happy to consult someone here who understands this and can help make the change.
