non-free flickr file PointsofNoReturn (talk) 21:22, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PointsofNoReturn,
As I am the one who uploaded the abovementioned image, I am replying here. If I change the license to {{cc-by-sa-4.0}} (which states: "Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use."), will it then be compatible with the Commons? Regards, Ip.213.100 (talk) 08:32, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, you seem not to understand the problem. At its source, [1], the image is available only under a license with prohibits commercial use (CC-NC). Such a restriction is not allowed on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 09:00, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt that the Flickr user (cirodelia47) is a copyright holder of these photos. They could be found on the web. Small resolution, no EXIF.

Juggler2005 (talk) 12:21, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Only two examples. File:Sharapova miami 2014.jpg was published in the Flickr in September 9, but it was published here in March 24. File:Caroline Wozniacki US Open 2014 finalist.jpg was published in the Flickr in September 10, but it was published here in September 8. Thats's enough, I guess. --Juggler2005 (talk) 18:02, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Modern panels including legible text, graphic layout, and imagery for which copyright status, licensing, and permission was not given. "Own work" applies only to the photography of these 2D and relief items, not to the items themselves — which seem to be non-permanent exhibits photographed indoors.

crudely drawn map of no educational use, thus personal artwork out of scope Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:07, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you repetitively renominating this with no significant change in your offered deletion rationale? That could be considered semi-annoying... AnonMoos (talk) 22:26, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because no one has actually considered the rationale for my deletion. if someone can argue that this is IN scope and of any value to project, i would be glad to hear it. Natuur12 kept it for no reason, i believe out of spite to me (why else would someone keep this?). that is not semi-annoying at all, its simply annoying. I shouldnt have to prepare a doctoral dissertation on this work to have it removed. rather, if someone wants to pay my full tuition and pay my household costs to go to grad school to study Wikipedia, and actually produce a thesis on this file, id be happy to do so:)Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:33, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Additional rationale: uploader has made numerous uploads of incredibly poor quality. anything that was traced or copied by him must be considered suspect as inaccurate, and since he is not a well known naive artist, this is not a valid artistic file we can host, as we dont host nonnotable works of art generally (some original creations are high quality accurate portrayals of facts, and have been allowed).Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:41, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kept Although I can't imagine why, this image has actually been in use on WP:PT for two years. Therefore, it cannot be deleted. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 16:32, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

creator of this map has taken out so much of the original maps details, that this version is useless in what it tries to convey, in addition to being of extremely poor quality. previous DR was a "keep" as file was being used. it was inapproprate to that article, and is nolonger in use. Mercurywoodrose (talk) 00:49, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Keep -- Strongly propose that User:Mercurywoodrose not be allowed further repetitive deletion nominations which adduce no new useful or relevant information, and serve only to annoy others and take up admins' time. AnonMoos (talk) 10:25, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Strongly propose that AnonMoos checks the matter carefully before uttering strong proposes containing thinly veiled threats («not allowed», really?): The previous DR was closed by (Jameslwoodward) with a statement where his unfavourable opinion of this image was evident, but keeping it because it was in use. Meanwhile, said use was discontinued, and a new DR was dully filed by Mercurywoodrose. -- Tuválkin 12:39, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • The air photo was used from the University of Connecticut MAGIC GIS data portal. This data is available for free and without restrictions. I would like to credit UConn MAGIC for this image file as the source of the data. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jwhangen (talk • contribs)
  • Though it's good to know where the photo was taken from, it's more important to know its original author. I doubt that air photo was made by the University itself, it seems to be using some satellite view like Google Maps that isn't free. And there is also no evidence that the university's images are also published under free license: if anyone can download them, it doesn't mean they are free rubin16 (talk) 05:13, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Highly unlikely PD rationale. The subject was born in Italy in 1913 and is obviously more than ten years old in this photo. There is no reason to believe that the first publication of this photo occurred in the United States before 1923. LX (talk, contribs) 10:57, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bogus PD-USGov licenses. The Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) and its suborganizations (e.g., NEESit, NEESWood, etc.) are not federal entities (they are a nonprofit-- i.e. non-governmental--consortium). For example, the source for File:2009-0709-earthquake.jpg clearly says "Copyright © 2012 The College of Engineering at Colorado State University"; NEES.org clearly says "Copyright © 2009 NEEShub"; etc. NEES may well receive funding from the US government, just as public universities, railroads, etc. do -- such funding (mere financial support) is not tantamount to federal authorship. See Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kashiwazaki nuclear plant.jpg for another example of the same bogus NEES=PD-USGov claim.

Bogus self license claim - uploader is the subject in these images and therefore cannot be the photographer (author); permission from the latter is required. Uploader should be well aware of this issue, as this is identical the issue(s) above and to images uploaded by ShustovVal, this user's sockpuppet, and deleted per Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by ShustovVal.

I am the owner of this file, and I no longer want it to be available to the public domain. Furthermore, this image is a copy of my signature; thus making it open for malicious usage. I uploaded the image to check the process of adding one into wiki media. But now I have noticed that the signature crops up whenever I type in my name in Google. Possible copyright violations - small sizes - no EXIF - own work claim doubtful - 4 images with EXIF are from 4 different cameras - also a collection of older images with no author info that look to be from 1920s/1940s

Out of scope.    FDMS  4    13:44, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, this is covered by [t]he fact that an unused snapshot of your friend could theoretically be used to illustrate an article on "Photographic portraiture" does not mean that we should keep all photographs of unknown people – if the quality was better and the setting more intended, we could keep it. There will always be category combinations in which a random selfie can be the only image we have (Category:People by status has many subcategories), but I doubt that a photo of this kind and quality has any use outside of a family album.    FDMS  4    20:44, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No sense in having these (pages would become very long if we added one for every language), should be replaced with {{Translation table}} and {{Category tree}}.    FDMS  4    20:15, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:Ntrsbig is unlikely the author of this logo. --Stefan4 (talk) 14:18, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment I'm the creator of the File:Inagawa-kai.svg. I based my SVG version off of Ntrsbig's File:Inagawa-kai.png. You can tell this was the order of things by looking at the creation/upload dates for the two files. The SVG was created in October 2007, while the PNG had two versions prior to that, one uploaded in July 2007 and one in August 2007. This August 2007 version looks exactly like mine, because it was the one I based mine on. Then, you'll see that in December 2007, Ntrsbig replaced his nice-looking PNG with an uglier version. Why, I have no clue. If I were to guess, perhaps to further discourage use of the PNG version when there's an SVG version available. Of course, if the question here is whether Ntrsbig was the original author of any of the images that were uploaded, I can offer little assistance. DarkPhoenix (talk) 06:17, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • The original logo was made by an illegal organisation (or at least the articles in which it is used imply so). We need permission from either the illegal organisation or from the individual member of the organisation who created the logo. The uploader of the PNG file is unlikely to be this person. --Stefan4 (talk) 12:03, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • Don't confuse copyright and trademark law, now. Copyright belongs to whoever made something. In the case of my SVG image, I made that. The copyright to it belongs to me. Had it been a simple conversion (e.g. PNG -> GIF), that statement would not have been true, but this was not such a simple conversion. While I had reference material (the PNG file), I manually created the SVG. Who knows who owns the PNG or where the PNG came from, but with regard to the SVG's copyright, it doesn't matter. If this Yakuza logo is trademarked, then its use would be very limited in scope, but still not illegal to use. You can use a Visa or Mastercard logo on relevant articles, regardless of whether it was created by somebody at Mastercard/Visa or created by a hobbyist in MSPaint, e.g. --DarkPhoenix (talk) 12:55, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • The SVG is a derivative work of the PNG file. You can't upload derivative works to Commons without permission from the original author. A logo like this is protected by copyright law, and possibly also by trademark law. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:03, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
          • I'll concede that you make a good point there. I'd still be interested in what the rest of the community has to say on the matter. In particular, I made my version in good faith, based on the license that was presented to me on the original work at the time I made mine. --DarkPhoenix (talk) 13:28, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Info You haven't followed the deletion request procedure properly. The description for the files' deletion reason is "Fill in reason for deletion here!" and you haven't done step II correctly (the request is supposed to be filename based, one request per file). --DarkPhoenix (talk) 13:28, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • A deletion request can be for any number of files. When there are multiple related files, it is customary to include all files in the same deletion request. I note that I forgot to add a reason to the {{Delete}} template on the file information pages. However, this is not a big problem as the reason is immediately visible on this page. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:35, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

screenshot of software Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:01, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is screenshot of PANTHER DB which is opensource! .. so I dont see a reason for deletion. Please comment. (UNSIGNED, posted by User:Shoaib2ali)
  • From Wikipedia entry""In bioinformatics the PANTHER (Protein ANalysis THrough Evolutionary Relationships) classification system is a large curated biological database of gene/protein families and their functionally related subfamilies that can be used to classify and identify the function of gene products. PANTHER is part of the Gene Ontology Reference Genome Project designed to classify proteins and their genes for high-throughput analysis. The project consists of both manual curation and bioinformatics algorithms. Proteins are classified according to family (and subfamily), molecular function, biological process and pathway. It is one of the databases feeding into the European Bioinformatics Institute's InterPro database. I would assume if it were indeed open source that the Wikipedia entry would say so.
  • The page for Panther software http://www.pantherdb.org/about.jsp, clearly states "© Copyright 2014 Paul Thomas All Rights Reserved." at the bottom and there is no indication that the software is opensource on that about page.
  • For your image with missing file data, incorrect license and missing categorization:
  • (1) Replace "own work" for "screenshot from Panther (LINK) open-source software",
  • (2) Provide link to source of the software which clearly shows the software to be open source,
  • (3) Apply correct license - uploader did not create the software, thus her or she cannot use PD-self for the entire image,
  • (4) Put image in its proper category.
