It says that the photographer is unknown but that he died more than 70 years ago. How can I verify these statements? They are not in the specified source.
Published or unpublished image? If it's an unpublished anonymous image (as of 1 January 2003), then it's copyrighted in USA for 120 years from creation. On the other hand, if it's a published image, then we need to know where it was published so that we can check whether the photographer is credited in order to determine the copyright status in the United Kingdom. 1. The Confederation of the Rhine never had a flag, its member states used their own flags.
2. This flag already exists at File:Alleged flag of the Rhine Confederation 1806-13.svg and has existed for many years with the appropriate documentation stating that the flag may be fictitious. There is consequently no need to have an almost exact copy of the original file here. Any usage of this file could be redirected to the original file so that no links are broken. KeepThe timestamp on the image in the linked article is "Monday, February 13, 2012 6:47:41 PM", however, this image was uploaded "14:02, 29 November 2011". - The meta data for the picture shows that it was taken on 22/10/2004. It was taken in the Oreanda Hotel in Yalta. The gathering was part of the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Charge of the Light Brigade. The original picture shows my wife talking to the General. The full meta data is given on the image page. This is part of a group of pictures taken during that week. Would anyone like to suggest a way in which I can prove ownership of this digital image, other than with the metadata already provided? SonofSetanta (talk) 15:07, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- In an effort to prove my ownership of the file and the series from which it was taken, I have now uploaded a different file to the infobox on the article Arthur Denaro. I suggest interested parties compare the metadata. SonofSetanta (talk) 15:17, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Commons claims that the book is in the public domain as the book was published in 1900 and as the author who is unspecified died before 1943. However, w:Basic Battle Skills states that the first edition wasn't published until 1981. Stefan4 (talk) 14:24, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- The first edition of this version was published long before 1981. My copy was issued to me in 1978 and that's where the image was taken from. The book contains no dates however which is typical of an army manual which has been issued unrevised. This link [4] confirms that another recipient of the book received his in 1979 and contains suggestion that the drawings are of 1950's vintage. This link says 1970 [5]. This link suggests 197? [6]. What I think you've got is a reprint of a book which has been in circulation for over 100 years, a copy of which is issued to every soldier as part of his basic training. The reason you're seeing 1970's and 1980's of the book for sale is because that corresponds to the demographics of people who are currently selling on the internet. SonofSetanta (talk) 15:14, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- Delete. The illustrations and typography are obviously much more modern than 1900; there's no reason to think copyright has expired. —Psychonaut (talk) 14:13, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
- I would suggest you wait until I hear from HMSO. Crown Copyright on published documents expires after 50 years so the date needed for first publication is 1963 for it to qualify. After that it comes down to permission for use from the owner - me. In any case the information given at w:Basic Battle Skills has definitely been proven wrong and HMSO is the definitive authority. The worst that can happen is that it turns out to be still under Crown Copyright which doesn't automatically mean deletion, just relicencing. SonofSetanta (talk) 10:47, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
- Further scrutiny under guidance proves my copy of this book to have been published in 1978 using the numbers found on the back flyleaf: Dd 0326483 60m 7/78 56-6554. So the claim made in w:Basic Battle Skills is plainly incorrect. I'm still awaiting the definite first publish date from TSO (HMSO). SonofSetanta (talk) 11:20, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- TSO have now been in contact and they have redirected me to the British Ministry of Defence. An e-mail has been sent and I await their reply. SonofSetanta (talk) 11:51, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Russell died in 1970, and this photo was obviously taken in a late stage of his life. The copyright term in the UK is the life of the creator plus 70 years, so this is very likely not in the public domain. De728631 (talk) 18:20, 18 July 2013 (UTC)

- I still don't see any source. The image description template hasn't been updated since you originally posted it on 18 July. You need to update the "Author" and "Source" fields of the template so that they present the correct information, including the author and source of both constituent images, and you need to make sure that the license tag you have selected is compatible with the licenses of both constituent images. —Psychonaut (talk) 19:57, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- My apologies. I was referring to the fact that the right hand image was sourced at File:Ulster Defence Regiment Insignia.jpg. I see exactly what you mean now however and I have edited in the information you have requested although I suggest you take a look at it because three of the inline refs don't work for some reason. I have left the licencing as "free" because both source files have free licences. I'm quite happy to make any other alterations you find necessary. BTW I could still remake this image using two Crown Copyright badges but would I be right in thinking you would find that less preferable because free images are always better than non free? SonofSetanta (talk) 10:01, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for providing the information. The provenance and licensing of the first image is disputed and currently under discussion at Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2013 July 18#File:RUR.jpg. Until that discussion is resolved I suggest that the present discussion remain open. If the Wikipedia discussion results in the finding that Wikipedia:File:RUR.jpg is not free, then this image will have to be deleted. In that case, no, you cannot remake this image with two Crown copyright badges, because Crown copyright works generally are not free, and we do not host non-free content here. —Psychonaut (talk) 12:39, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- You're very welcome. I know we'll get this resolved sooner or later. In an effort to do so I have uploaded File:Badge Comparison sketch.jpg. According to Sodacan, images which are sketched in this fashion are free. Are you in agreement? SonofSetanta (talk) 13:41, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- No. It appears that what you have done is used an image editing program with a "sketch" type filter to create a derivative work of the original, probably non-free, image. A derivative work of a non-free image is still non-free. Either Sodacan was mistaken, or else you misinterpreted his advice. —Psychonaut (talk) 14:42, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Derivative work of medal of unknown age. Stefan4 (talk) 14:02, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Nope, sorry. A picture of my own medals. New pictures available on request. Were I you I would check the metadata against that of other images posted by USER:GDD1000, USER:TheThunderer and myself. SonofSetanta (talk) 15:16, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- It appears you aren't keen to see a new image of these medals so I have sent it to permissions and asked them to verify ownership of the image and remove the deletion tag. SonofSetanta (talk) 11:19, 26 July 2013 (UTC)
- SonofSetanta, by "my own medals", do you mean you created the medals yourself? If not, then your photograph is indeed a derivative work of the engraver's original designs. If the designs are still under copyright and not freely licensed (which is the usual and presumed condition for medals designed after the 1920s), then your photograph cannot be hosted on Commons. If there is a Wikipedia article which discusses these medals in detail, then you can probably upload your photograph on Wikipedia and include it in the article under a claim of fair use. —Psychonaut (talk) 11:44, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
- No Psychonaut, I did not design them, they were awarded to me for military service. My name, rank and unit is engraved on the edge of each medal and I have an e-mail from the National Archive outlining my right to photograph them and publish the photograph. If you feel this still precludes me from licencing them as "self" I am quite happy to change the licence to a UK Open Government Licence v1.0 which is used at File:Conspicuous Gallantry Cross obverse.jpg. However if that is the case then at least three other image pages on Commons will need changed which are the descriptions of the above medals. They are File:General Service Medal 1962 obv.jpg, File:General Service Medal 1962 rev.jpg and File:44acmob.jpg. I am happy to do this if you believe it to be the proper course of action. SonofSetanta (talk) 11:38, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Your right to photograph and publish the photographs of third-party material is not sufficient here; you need to show that the copyright holder of the engravings has granted everyone, not just you, the right to use and distribute the images for any purpose not otherwise restricted by law, including commercial purposes, and the right to alter the images. The UK Open Government Licence is such a grant. If you have evidence that the medal designs have been released under the UK OGL, then please provide it via OTRS. If the licence is verified then the image can be kept. —Psychonaut (talk) 12:47, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- The Open Government Licence covers it and the file has been updated to reflect that. SonofSetanta (talk) 13:38, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for providing this information. Unfortunately, the defenceimagery.mod.uk URLs you've provided don't work (at least not for me). I suspect that this is because that website encodes session information in the URL, and that session has expired. You need to provide a more "permanent" URL to the records in question. There may be instructions on the defenceimagery.mod.uk how to do this. It's important that we be able to visit the original images on defenceimagery.mod.uk, or else no one else will be able to verify that they are under the UK OGL. —Psychonaut (talk) 14:31, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Try it now, however, in the interim I've had an e-mail from the National Archives which says, "I would expect that as these specific medals are your property, they do not require the use of the OGL to display them. The designs themselves remain Crown Copyright, which you could acknowledge in caption. Display of images of the same medals from other sources would require either the permission of the owner, or application to display under the OGL." What changes to the current licencing would you suggest after reading that? SonofSetanta (talk) 16:09, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you. Your updated template references image #45153994 as being under the OGL. However, this image is a photograph of medals on someone's jacket; it's clear that the OGL applies to the photograph, but less so that they apply to the medallion engravings themselves. The image you uploaded is not a derivative work of image #45153994 and so you can't claim that it's free on that basis. I hope other editors more versed in licensing will weigh in here. In the meantime, though, can I suggest once again that the easiest way of resolving this issue would simply be to upload your photograph to Wikipedia (not Commons) and use it in an article about the medals under a claim of fair use? —Psychonaut (talk) 19:51, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not going to change the licencing yet because I've left comments for you on your talk page which, if accepted, mean that the images are free and don't require any licencing at all - as long as the medals are "owned" by the uploader; which I have taken to mean "awarded to" rather than bought in a second hand shop. SonofSetanta (talk) 09:56, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
- All MOD medal images are at https://www.gov.uk/medals-campaigns-descriptions-and-eligibility. Note at bottom of the page confirms all images are released under OGL, except where otherwise stated. I believe this ends the discussion? SonofSetanta (talk) 11:15, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
