Staff changes
In December 2022, 2 sysops were removed. Currently, there are 189 sysops.
- User:Seddon (WMF)'s temporary sysop expired on 2 December. We thank him for his service.
- User:4nn1l2 was globally banned by WMF on 6 December and subsequently removed.
- (The global ban was applied to 16 users. Some statements about the global ban by WMFOffice: 1 2 3.)
Other news
After more than 10 years and campaign efforts by many Commons users, user right sboverride
was finally created in July 2022. This user right would allow users edit while overriding m:Spam blacklist.

- User:Cybularny was elected (26/1/0) on 1 February.
- User:Mardetanha was removed on 13 February due to inactivity. He has served as sysop since 24 August 2008. We thank him for his service.

Election:
- User:Kritzolina was elected (35/2/0) on 2 March.
Removal:
- User:Amada44 was removed on 13 March due to inactivity. They had served as sysop since 28 June 2010.
- User:Cookie was removed on 13 March due to inactivity. She had served as sysop since 5 October 2005.
- User:JuTa was removed on 13 March due to inactivity. They had served as sysop since 6 June 2012 and as bureaucrat since 2 June 2015.
- User:Matanya was removed on 13 March due to inactivity. They had served as sysop since 19 April 2011.
- User:Nat was removed on 13 March due to inactivity. He had served as sysop since 1 June 2020.
- User:Srittau was removed on 13 March due to inactivity. He had served as sysop since 19 November 2016.

- User:Fitindia was removed on 8 May "pursuant to an Ombuds Commission decision" by User:WMFOffice. He had served as checkuser since 29 January 2022.

- The Flickr Foundation ( https://www.flickr.org/ ) announced that they would adopt the Flickr2Commons tool, originally developed by Magnus Manske:
We've partnered with the Wikimedia Foundation to adopt a tool called Flickr2Commons. We want to look after it and extend its features with the long term in mind. Keep your eyes open for "Flickypedia", which we plan to re-release towards the end of the year.
- A representative of the Wikimedia Foundation elaborated that they would be working together with the Flickr Foundation and that future updates would be posted on Commons:WMF support for Commons.
- Nigeria enacted Copyright Act, 2022 on 17 March 2023.[1] The new law restricted freedom of panorama in Nigeria. See here for details.
