Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought: I have at least a few thousand images of NGC/IC objects generated from the wikisky website that I want to upload here. The images are in a process of manual approval for quality and once completed the massive upload could be started. Besides the uploading of these images, they should also be categorized accordingly. For example NGC 1 should be placed in category Category:NGC_1, and so on.
Automatic or manually assisted: The task would be performed automatically.
Edit type (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): One time run.
Maximum edit rate (eg edits per minute): Each image is less than 100kB and approximately 50kB on average in size. I don't know what the upload rate will be, but probably not faster than 1 image per second.
Bot flag requested: (Y/N): Yes, EdinBot needs a bot flag.
Programming language(s): Python

Discussion
I have been been working intensively on the Bosnian Wikipedia by doing all kinds of massive bot tasks, so the experience should in any case not be an issue (EdinBot SUL). -- Edinwiki (talk) 14:03, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Please make test uploads. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:14, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Is this the highest quality you can get? Did you read Commons:Guide to batch uploading? Might be useful. Multichill (talk) 22:01, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- @EugeneZelenko: I'll do a few test uploads soon. I first have to deal with some image-related things which is partly described below.
@Multichill: Yes and no. I'll elaborate a bit more on the details of the images. The wikisky website offers different modes of displaying some object. You can view an object in the DSS2, SPSS or Astrophoto mode (and a few others which didn't seem relevant enough). The DSS2 and SPSS modes are basically the same but the images differ in terms of hue and brightness. In a lot of cases, the Astrophoto does not offer any image of an object and that is because the satellite has only scanned certain parts of the sky. However, in a lot of cases, when we have a useful Astrophoto version it does also provide much more detail of a specific area than do DSS2 and SPSS. So to answer your question, in cases of DSS2 and SPSS there is almost always a relatively low resolution image available (depending on how far an object is) but which is still somehow usable to present on info boxes on wikipedia (NGC1 example). In cases of Astrophoto, often a much better quality is achievable. Compare here a DSS2 version with an Astrophoto version. -- Edinwiki (talk) 01:07, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

- I don't see any test uploads. What is Is this the highest quality you can get? referring to? --Dschwen (talk) 00:28, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- Please read the description. And I'm sorry about the absence of my test uploads. Like explained below, I need to make sure that the categorizations are done properly. I also want to add the Bosnian translation of the English text and other info (i.e. Category:NGC_1). Furthermore, there are some other complications with these categories. The catalogue lists also objects as NGC 61A, NGC 61B, NGC 94-1, NGC 94-2, NGC 1796B-1, NGC 1796B-2 and so on. These are separate objects and hence need either separate categories or there should be some additional text added explaining that for example NGC 94 can be referring to NGC 94-1 or NGC 94-2, and so on. I have to take all these things into consideration before starting my test uploads, so I need a bit more time to set this up. -- Edinwiki (talk) 23:07, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- What am I supposed to see in the description? Sorry if I'm a bit thick here. --Dschwen (talk) 04:14, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

- Since size is not necessarily a measure of quality I did not take this into account. --Dschwen (talk) 15:30, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

There are additional categorizations that should be made on each object of which a category does not exist (such as Category:NGC spiral galaxies, Category:Pegasus (constellation)). I'm working on that now and hope soon to be able to begin with test uploads. -- Edinwiki (talk) 20:33, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
I have done the first test uploads.1 The DSS2 and SDSS images are non-commercial use2, but the link to the data rights on the website is broken and I couldn't find any working link. There is however this. Should I put that instead in the image description? -- Edinwiki (talk) 00:19, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
During the search on copyright info on DSS2 images, I found an earlier going discussion here on commons here, which I guess is relevant in this case. So now I assume that I can upload the SDSS images, but not the DSS2 images. Can anyone please confirm this? If so, the DSS2 images should all be deleted. PS. I have created a custom template for the permission attribute in the infobox: {{SDSS}}. -- Edinwiki (talk) 00:37, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- But non-commercial usage is definitely contradict Commons:Licensing. Such images could not be uploaded on Commons. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:29, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- You are completely right. Then it basically ends here. Thanks. -- Edinwiki (talk) 20:03, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Closed. Images to be uploaded by this bot are not sufficiently free cor commons. --Dschwen (talk) 21:17, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
