@Designermadsen: Thank you for adding the "Category description ... Precipitation by administrative division" in the 18 municipalities of the Main-Tauber-Kreis, [https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Snow_in_Weikersheim&diff=715441169&oldid=714627219 for example here in Weikersheim (city).

@AnRo0002: to recognize.

The Main-Tauber-Kreis have 18 municipalities (with 11 cities and 7 other municipalities).

The Category description works in the 11 cities (Bad Mergentheim, Boxberg (Baden), Creglingen, Freudenberg (Baden), Grünsfeld, Külsheim, Lauda-Königshofen, Niederstetten, Tauberbischofsheim, Weikersheim, Wertheim) ... ... but not in the 7 other municipalities (Ahorn (Baden), Assamstadt, Großrinderfeld, Igersheim, Königheim, Werbach, Wittighausen).

Do they have to be added somewhere in the background to make it work there?

Districts / Regierungsbezirke

[edit]

@Joshbaumgartner and AnRo0002: The template in the Category:Snow in Main-Tauber-Kreis with "Precipitation by administrative division" shows only the "Regierungsbezirk Stuttgart" after this change from @Designermadsen: .

In the past, I always navigated between different Districts, that are geographically next to each other (for example Main-Tauber-Kreis ist located next to Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis), but are assigned to different administrative districts (for example Main-Tauber-Kreis = Regierungsbezirk Stuttgart; Neckar-Odenwad-Kreis = Regierungsbezirk Karlsruhe).

The Regierungsbezirke do not play an important role in Baden-Württemberg (!) as they do in Bavaria. They are also not categorized in Baden-Württemberg. But we have ~850 Category:Categories of Baden-Württemberg by district. That is why I find this disadvantageous to show only Regierungsbezirke for navigation.

Could - in Baden-Württemberg - all 44 districts be visible for navigation again instead of only districs by Regierungsbezirke ?

@Triplec85: So if I am understanding the situation correctly, you would find it more useful to have the navigation by district include a list of all districts of Baden-Württemberg, not just those within the current Regierungsbezirk. In particular, you would like to be able to horizontally navigate between districts that are geographically adjacent, regardless of their parent affiliation. Is that right?
@Joshbaumgartner: Yes, that is right. -- Triple C 85 | User talk | 08:32, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have been considering the problem of geographical navigation, allowing the user to more instinctively 'travel' to adjacent regions in a way not based on lists limited to one region. For example, if you are in Montana, one can use the existing navigation box to go to any other state in the US, but cannot get to the neighboring province of Alberta in Canada. Is there a way we can add this without unduly exacerbating the size and complexity of existing nav templates?
@Joshbaumgartner: In dont't talk about other states (like Baden-Württemberg and nearby district in Bavaria) and don't talk about other countries (like Germany, nearby district in France). I only mean nearby districts in Baden-Württemberg. The Regierungsbezirke are not important in Baden-Württemberg. Regierungsbezirke are rather a pure administrative level (deep state), which plays no role for the local people. So the navigation is better between:
  • countries (with government, for example Bundesregierung with Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz)
  • states (with government, Ministerpräsidenten, for example Winfried Kretschmann in Baden-Württemberg)
  • Regierungsbezirke pure administrative level for some districts (deep state), which plays no important role for the local people; some german federal states have already abolished Regierungsbezirke in the past. in Baden-Württemberg I would also like to see that. Because the fish always stinks first from the head. And local administration is more important. ;-)
  • districts (with government; Landräte, for example Christoph Schauder in Main-Tauber-Kreis)
  • municipalities (with government, Bürgermeister, for example Anette Schmidt in Tauberbischofsheim)

When it comes to subdivisions, the nav lists are typically going to be limited to a list of that level of subdivision within the limits of the next level division above it (e.g. Districts within a Regierungsbezirk). Creating a nav box for the current level but including all of that type within the next higher level (e.g. Districts within a State) can be done, but again, how do we do that without adding too much size and complexity, and how do we decide which level to navigate at for a given region? To some degree, I have done something akin to this with countries in the {{Topic by country}} nav boxes, allowing countries to either be listed by continent, or in one list for the whole world, depending on which was more appropriate for the number of countries that would be listed.
In the specific case of districts in Baden-Württemberg, I agree that 44 districts (probably not all will exist for a given topic anyway) is fine for a single list and that breaking it down into sub-groups by Regierungsbezirk probably isn't as useful. Josh (talk) 18:39, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner: I don't see a problem with that 44 districts. The navigation bars previously NEVER contained Regierungsbezirke. Only after switching to these general templates do Regierungsbezirke suddenly appear. It should be the same as before. -- Triple C 85 | User talk | 08:51, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Triplec85: Yes, I understand that. I am not sure what these 'general templates' are that you are referring to. If you are talking about the {{Topic by country}} templates I have been working on, that one isn't present here. I assure you that it has not gotten to this granular of a level yet (except maybe some experiments) and when they do I will definitely keep your input in mind. If you are talking about the one currently on this category ({{Category description}} I think), it dates from 2018 and seems to be an abandoned project (maybe, not sure, ask the creator). This is why I was speaking more generally earlier. As for this specific case, I think I was clear that I agree with navigation across all districts in B-W. Sorry if you got the wrong idea from my rambling. Josh (talk) 19:13, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Joshbaumgartner: Example snow in the past:

  • countries
  • states
  • districts (of Baden-Württemberg)
  • municipalities (in Main-Tauber-Kreis)
  Main-Tauber-Kreis: Ahorn · Assamstadt · Bad Mergentheim · Boxberg · Creglingen · Freudenberg · Großrinderfeld · Grünsfeld · Igersheim · Königheim · Külsheim · Lauda-Königshofen · Niederstetten · Tauberbischofsheim · Weikersheim · Werbach · Wertheim · Wittighausen

I often navigated between Main-Tauber-Kreis, Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis (nearby) and other nearby districts (in other Regiergungsbezirke).

Example snow now:

  • countries
  • states
  • districts in REGIERUNGSBEZIRK STUTTGART (of Baden-Württemberg)
  • municipalities (in Main-Tauber-Kreis)

Now it is not possible to navigate to nearby districts in Baden-Württemberg, if they are in other Regierungsbezirke :-( -- Triple C 85 | User talk | 08:51, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I agree that any replacement for that past collection of nav boxes needs to retain the ability to navigate across all districts of the state. Josh (talk) 19:13, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
