Clarification request

Is "media type" the same as "file type", or are there subtleties I'm not aware of? A cursory look at the subcategories makes me wonder how this mess was built. Paradoctor (talk) 00:12, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

I think they are the same. Media is more conceptual and files are more down to earth, but in practice their types are the same. --Jarekt (talk) 02:10, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

georeferenced images?

Hi. I am a complete noobie with regard to wiki media. But I have some experience with georeferenced images. there are three basic types: Images with a pair of corrdinates marking the location of the subject or the photographer. Images that are maps that carry enough information to overlay with other georefernced information in a coherent way. Perspective images that have a 3D observer location, a direction, field of view,and pitch, roll and yaw terms.

These modes of georeferencing permit lots of really great applications, including really cool augmented reality stuff. For example, you might have an app that overlays your Google map with a historic map of the place you are standing. There are well defined open standards for encoding and embedding this information into images. There are also open source tools for attaching these references to images.

so, my question: if a person wanted to do some work on adding these new enhanced media types to wiki media commons, where would such a person go to get some background on how this works?
