Discussion
[edit]here is where a discussion should take place. Thank you for your contribution, 79.197.126.187 16:00, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
- Great. There need some clean-up to be done in Category:Racing pigeons and maybe a category for pigeon statues/memorials such as File:Yasukuni Bronze Carrier Pigeon.JPG and File:Charleroi-Au pigeon soldat.jpg. --Foroa (talk) 19:08, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
- Info for memorials see also Category:Monuments and memorials to animals --PigeonIP (talk) 11:25, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you,
- I crossed the names Category:Flying pigeons and Category:Utility pigeons, because there may be misinterpretation. Category:Sporting pigeons and Category:Domesticated pigeons as food may be better categorynames.
- I am looking for a solution to pigeon statues/memorials. I'd like to separate the memorials for individual pigeons from files like this: File:Sculpture of pigeon on cemetery near church of Saint Barbara in Příseka, Brtnice.jpg, File:Paul_Hannong_Strassburg9.JPG, File:Cupid Feeding Doves-Hermitage.jpg. There are the pigeons Category:Cher_Ami, File:Homing pigeon Kyodo 331, in the headquarters of Kyodo News.jpg and File:Dave-Sudbury-King-of-Rome.jpg, too. --> Category:Famous pigeons? --84.181.63.204 08:17, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- Category:Famous pigeons might fit indeed in Category:Famous mammals. Category:Racing pigeons might be better moved to Category:Pigeon racing (see:en:Pigeon_racing - de:Brieftaubensport#Brieftaubensport) or pigeon sports: in some countries, there is a massive amount of money involved. --Foroa (talk) 08:51, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- No idea what you mean with "Release Doves" and why it is capitalised. --Foroa (talk) 08:52, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- w:Release dove: released at weddings, memorials and some sporting events, like the Olympics till Soul(?). File:Bundesarchiv Bild 183-1987-0621-007, Berlin, Gartenfest des VKSK.jpg might fit into it, too. Capitalised because of w:Talk:Release_dove#Move_to_Release_dove.3F, but Category:Release dove might do as well, it refers to the purpose and not to a breed.
- Pigeon sports: There is a lot money there! Most with racing pigeons but there are also w:Tipplers (they fly a very long period of time) and Rollers. Rollers earn points for showing most flips in a defined period of time. But tipplers and rollers are no homing pigeons which fly a long distance back home. So Category:Pigeon racing should be part of both: Pigeon sports and Homing. Last but not least there are Highflying pigeons and Spielflugtauben (showing figures in flight).
- AND there are de:Taubenflöten! I am let to belief it is a traditional Chinese sport. So pigeon sports are not limited to pigeon racings. --84.181.63.204 09:26, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- Category:Pigeon sports may include de:Taubenjagd (Ozeanien) and de:Taubenschießen, too. But I don't know if I'd like to mix the cute Rollers with such "sports". --84.181.63.204 09:45, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- Might as well call it Category:Dove releases (releases of doves), proper plural and capitalisation and no confusion possible with breeds. Chinese, Taiwanese and Japanese players seem to spend more than 100000 € for a pigeon, that is expensive per kilo ;) --Foroa (talk) 11:46, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- Indeed, it is. The situation in China is very special, too. Most traditional breeds got lost, through a period of time, in which breeding was forbidden.
- Category:Dove releases might even be Category:Pigeon releases following this discussion. Whereas mostly white pigeons cover the symbol of the Holy Spirit in (Christian) weddings and the Dove of Peace in sporting events, the file from above would fit too. (maybe there was too much pigeon releasing in the GDR. I remember releasing one or two white pigeons through a window in kindergarten as a child at the w:International Day of Peace. But we loved it ;) )
- Is it possible to move most of Category:Domesticated pigeon breeds to Category:Pigeon breeds by name to be able to compare it to Category:Feral pigeons? Or should we wait a week or two longer? This request includes all listed breeds, Category:Unidentified pigeon breeds, Category:Pigeon breeds by country of origin and the three association categories. --84.181.63.204 14:11, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
- There used to be many dove releases in weddings: make peace before starting the war. For the important moves, insert a {{Move}} with ref to the discussion and wait a week before you release the dove ... --Foroa (talk) 14:25, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

- There was a Category:Pigeon dishes in Category:Pigeons. I have to think about how to handle this with Category:Domesticated pigeons as food.
- I also crossed Category:Domesticated pigeons by purpose. It would have become a metacategory with little use. To only differ fancy, sporting, homing and food.
- not sure you have to make a specialised category Category:Domesticated pigeons as food, Category:Pigeons as food used to be the meat of the poor, no questions asked where they where coming from. Not sure if there are specialised farms or "producers".
- It might be a good idea to put the outcome of this discussion on a page that fits in Category:Commons category schemes and to make a reference to it in the main cats. --Foroa (talk) 07:28, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
- I am not sure either. Maybe someone is eating the eggs, too. Would that be covered by dishes as well? If so, pigeons as food would be indeed useless.
- I was thinking about it, too. This discussion could be appreciated at its talk page. --PigeonIP (talk) 07:58, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
- Category:Domesticated pigeon breeds --> Category:Pigeon breeds
- Category:Pigeon post --> Category:Carrier pigeons
- Category:Racing pigeons --> Category:Pigeon racing

How to handle:
[edit]This category has currently 2 Files. It could refer to:
- Category:Pigeon breeds
- Category:Pigeon housings
- Category:Pigeon fanciers
- Category:Pigeon farmers
- Category:Fancy pigeons
- Category:Homing pigeons
- Category:Sporting pigeons
Looking at the parents Category:Animal breeding and Category:Aviculture it is more related to farming. But Category:Animal breeding seams not organised, too. Maybe better redirect to Category:Animal husbandry. --PigeonIP (talk) 10:11, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
refers to municipalities and contain mostly feral pigeons. Exceptions are:
- File:Bundesarchiv Bild 183-W0212-034, Sporttaubenzüchter.jpg
- Category:Pigeons in Kabul = Category:Paghmani Pigeons (as a breed), maybe move to Category:Pigeons of/in Afghanistan (there are also native populations) --PigeonIP (talk) 10:11, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
maybe disambiguation:
- Category:Feral pigeons by country (Category:Feral pigeons of Malaysia, Category:Feral pigeons of the United States, ...): sure a {{By country category|Feral pigeons}} meta cat. --Foroa (talk) 18:38, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
- Category:Pigeons by municipalities (Venice, Sevilla, ...)
- Category:Pigeons by municipality like "by city" categories in Category:Categories by city (flat list) are a bad idea: definition of en:City or en:Municipality is quite arbitrary and maps to different things in different countries. Municipalities are mostly present in Germanic countries I think. I have not seen a good compromise yet and the nice thing about "xxx by location" is that you can organise it by city/municipality/town but equally by district or province without tens of intermediate meta cats: easy for sparsely populated structures that grow. --Foroa (talk) 18:38, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
- Category:Domesticated pigeons by setting
- Category:Pigeon breeds by country of origin --PigeonIP (talk) 10:44, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
- Connections between breeds in a country and pigeons (and by location) in a country seems to be missing. In which country we have a sample top level case ? Suggest to avoid whenever possible the feral or domestic prefix/qualifier; this will be a source of confusion and people will create intermediate "pigeon" or even "wild pigeon" cats anyway and to confuse even more with similar cats in Category:Columbidae juvenile, eating ... Not easy. --Foroa (talk) 18:38, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
- I hope I get you right. Connections between breeds in a country and pigeons (and by location) in a country seems to be missing. In which country we have a sample top level case ? There should be no top level case for this categories. Because country of origin is the country where a breed developed fist / was first bread. Example: w:American Show Racers were developed in the USA but are held by pigeon fanciers all over the world. So pictures of theses pigeons my be taken everywhere all over the world, but the country of origin of this breed is still the US. (there are even breeds that aren't kept in the country of origin anymore but somewhere else).
- A get: Category:Pigeons by location should be kept. Not only for feral pigeons but also for pigeons of breeds (and wild pigeons, even others than Columba liva).
- Category:Pigeons of Germany should clarify. --Foroa (talk) 19:18, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- To prevent confusion: Maybe User Jack ma had a point: Domesticated pigeons could be merged to pigeons, only. With sidekicks in a description to Category:Columbidae, Category:Columba livia and Category:Unidentified Columbidae
- Agree: the simpler the name and number of levels, the less problems. --Foroa (talk) 19:18, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- There are three Categories, that should be clearly linked to Columba liva domestica: Category:Domesticated pigeon anatomy (or Columba livia domestica anatomy), Category:Domesticated pigeons (juvenile) (or Young domesticated pigeons; Columba livia domestica (juvenile)), Category:Domesticated pigeons eggs (better Category:Columba livia domestica eggs or Category:Columba livia eggs (domesticated))
- Why Columba livia domestica?: have a look at Category:Streptopelia risoria (domesticated) --PigeonIP (talk) 09:43, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

Header for Category:Pigeons
[edit]
Category:Domesticated pigeons was created to fit w:Domesticated pigeon, but there are not only domesticated forms of columba livia, but also of other columbidae as Category:Streptopelia risoria. To prevent confusion names of categories should be simple --> the prefix domesticated should be used as little as possible. Would this be a good header for Category:Pigeons, if Category:Domesticated pigeons becomes a redirect to Category:Pigeons? --PigeonIP (talk) 20:10, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
