English: Brownsville Bridge which links the historic gateway town of Brownsville in Fayette County with West Brownsville, Washington County, Pennsylvania across the Monongahela River along the nation's first federally funded highway.
• The covered wooden bridge it replaced in Western Pennsylvania was part of the famed National Pike, in the day still an important E-W artery. The U.S. National Road was one of the key overland eastern Emigrant Trails between the east (and the ports) and the U.S. near-west in the 1770s-1860s, eventually connecting to East St. Louis on the Mississippi.

■ Immigrants and emigrants could take riverboats from Brownsville, which early on specialized in building them and steamboats, or just outfit there after crossing the mountains unencumbered by wagon or equipment. People could also take a stagecoach either direction.
■ Brownsville Bridge was an early all steel bridge in the United States, and one of the earliest built for the newly developing automotive traffic. It was designed by Richard Delafield and built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Constructed in 1913 on the National Road in Brownsville, Pennsylvania enroute to West Brownsville, PA in Washington County, PA, it remains in use today for connections to PA Route 88, and local traffic. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.bridge in United States of America | |||||
