Brooklands Memorial

English: The Brooklands Memorial is a memorial at Brooklands, the historic motoring and aviation complex. Commissioned by the Brooklands-based aircraft manufacturer Vickers-Armstrongs to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of Brooklands Motor Course, it was unveiled by Lord Brabazon of Tara in July 1957. The lettering is 'BROOKLANDS 1907-1939', which mark the years of the first and last race meetings on the motor course. It was originally positioned to the west of the River Wey near the top of Railway Straight, inside the taxiing loop at the north end of the runway used by the aircraft factory. It was aligned in a SW-NE direction, so that the memorial wall was parallel to Railway Straight, and therefore visible from the London to Southampton Railway (the present day track that heads NE from Byfleet and New Haw railway station). To make way for Mercedes-Benz World, the memorial has since been moved around 200m to the east, to a new position on the east bank of the River Wey, which is the western boundary of the Brooklands Museum site. In this new position, it is still aligned in a SW-NE direction.
