crontab

When I type crontab, Toolforge shows "/usr/local/bin/crontab: only tools are allowed crontabs". Why does it happen?--維基小霸王 (talk) 03:50, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Fixing incorrect files names

Hi!

I’m facing some issues with files having typo errors. As I discovered that your bot is already removing spaces before file extensions, perhaps could you please add a new functionality?

The problem is that files names shouldn’t have:

  • a space after the “(“
  • a space before the “)”
  • a space before the “.”

Example: File:Albero Alto ( Huesca ) . - panoramio.jpg should be : File:Albero Alto (Huesca). - panoramio.jpg. As to avoid a few exceptions, I suggest to fix only files names having both “(“ and “)”. It could also usefull to have an exception-list.

Statistics I can provide are:

  • intitle:/"(" +/ 1 342
  • intitle:/ +")"/ 1 239
  • intitle:/" ."/ (difficult to know if there are exception because of too many redirects that are probably unused and could be removed)

Is it something you can handle?

I'm not sure if this follows Commons:File_renaming. I also don't know that my bot removes spaces. Perhaps it is the double file extension you are talking about regarding my bot? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 17:46, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
This is exactly the same kind of typo error your are already fixing: Robot: Removing space.
See also en:Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Brackets and parentheses: «There should be no space next to the inner side of a bracket.»
--FDo64 (talk) 20:20, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Apparently that was a one-time run and agreed upon by multiple users. I think you should raise this to VP to see whether the community thinks this is okay according to the guideline.
Enwiki MoS is enwiki's. Enwiki is not Common's only client and there may be other wikis that do not agree with this style of parenthesis. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 21:06, 15 September 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your answers. I thought it was a permanent maintenance bot. I would have liked so much. I’m doing manually this kind of job for frwiki.
I’m not familiar with Commons: I did not know what “VP” meant, apparently “Commons:Village pump”.
So I will post a message in the VP and then in Commons:Bots/Work requests if agreed.

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging

The development team is starting work on one of the last planned features for SDC v1.0, a lightweight tool to suggest depicts tags for images. I've published a project page for it, please have a look. I plan to share this page with everyone on Commons much more broadly in the coming days. The tool has been carefully designed to try to not increase any workload on Commons volunteers; for starters, it will be opt-in for auto-confirmed users only and will not generate any sort of backlog here on Commons. Additionally, the tool is highly privacy-minded for the contributors and publicly-minded for the third party being used, in this case Google. The implementation and usage notes contain more information about these and other potential concerns as a starting place. It's really important that the tool is implemented properly from the start, so feedback is welcome. Questions, comments, concerns are welcome on the talk page and I will get answers as quickly as possible as things come up. On the talk page you can also sign up to make sure you're a part of the feedback for designs and prototype testing. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 17:57, 17 September 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - blogs posted in Wikimedia Space

There are two separate blog entries for Structured Data on Commons posted to Wikimedia Space that are of interest:

  • Working with Structured Data on Commons: A Status Report, by Lucas Werkmeister, discusses some ways that editors can work with structured data. Topics include tools that have been written or modified for structured data, in addition to future plans for tools and querying services.
  • Structured Data on Commons - A Blog Series, written by me, is a five-part posting that covers the basics of the software and features that were built to make structured data happen. The series is meant to be friendly to those who may have some knowledge of Commons, but may not know much about the structured data project.
I hope these are informative and useful, comments and questions are welcome. All the blogs offer a comment feature, and you can log in with your Wikimedia account using oAuth. I look forward to seeing some posts over there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:33, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2019 – Last day to enter!

This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019.
Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2019? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2019}} to your userpage!

September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.

If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.

If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.

As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:49, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging designs

I've published a design consultation for the computer-aided tagging tool. Please look over the page and participate on the talk page. If you haven't read over the project page, it might be helpful to do so first. The tool will hopefully be ready by the end of this month (October 2019), so timely feedback is important. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
