File renaming
[edit]Hello, I notice you renamed a file, File:Macedonia-borders mk.png under "file renaming criterion 2", honoring a renaming request [1]. I don't really see how the file met that criterion, or how the previous name was inappropriate. It's a map that shows the boundaries of the geographical region of Macedonia, in relation to the borders of the states of which it forms part, so I see nothing wrong with calling the file "Macedonia-borders". It's certainly not "meaningless", nor does it fall under any of the narrowly circumscribed groups of cases given at Commons:File renaming#cite_note-2. The new title, in contrast, contains a glaring POV message, in labelling the map as an expression of "irridentism". The proposer's argument that it does so because it applies Macedonian placenames to places outside the borders of the country of Macedonia is of course bogus – it just happens to be a map expressed in the Macedonian language, as appropriate for the Macedonian Wikipedia, so of course the placenames will be in that language.
Would you mind moving the file back please? Fut.Perf. ☼ 22:06, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Future Perfect at Sunrise. Probably you are right. But the previous file name was not very clear; it's not meaningless, but it is ambiguous enough, and thus falls under criterion 2, IMO. Proof for this is a Deletion request from 2010 and the File talk page. A better name for this file will prevent further conflicts between any of potentially involved parts. Perhaps, changing a bit the original file name to remove ambiguity is a good solution. Maybe "Macedonia (region) borders - mk.png" or "Region of Macedonia borders - mk.png" are better titles, what do you think? Do you have another proposals or you insist just to rename file back to its old name? --XXN, 10:24, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, good thinking about clarifying the title in some other way. No problem about something along those lines, as far as I'm concerned. Other files of a similar nature have been called things like File:Region of Macedonia and present states borders.png, File:Macedonia-Region.png, File:Macedonia overview.svg and so on. Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:36, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
- Moved to File:Macedonia (region) borders - mk.png. Hope now is OK. --XXN, 11:34, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, works for me, thanks. Fut.Perf. ☼ 11:58, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
[edit]You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear XXN,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:45, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Moving categories
[edit]Thank you for correcting wrong category names, e.g. Category:Sint Martinuskerk, Beek (Montferland). Could you also move files to the new category? I suggest you using the Cat-a-lot gadget - a few clicks is enough. Somebody has to do it anyway. It seems that bots do not do it: "A bot cleans this up from time to time, but only for long standing redirects, not for attempts to move a category to another one." Afterwards, a null edit seems to be the best method to remove the emptied category redirection from Category:Non-empty category redirects BartekChom (talk) 08:41, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- I expected that RussBot will do it for me, as it is actually active. --XXN, 11:51, 25 July 2016 (UTC)
- If you say so... I have seen that it is active, but I am not sure, that it moves pages from new category redirects. Let's see what will happen to File:Petőfi Csarnok, Repüléstörténeti kiállítás, Rubik R-22SV Super Futár.JPG in a new category redirect Category:R-22 Június. BartekChom (talk) 06:51, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
- The bot seems to wait quite long: User:RussBot/category_redirect_log: "Skipping Category:Gnathocerus; in cooldown period.", created on 20 June. BartekChom (talk) 06:57, 26 July 2016 (UTC)
Hello!
Thank you for uploading File:Malta Portugal Locator.png to the Wikimedia Commons. I noticed that when you uploaded from another Wikimedia project, you left out some important information, or copied it incorrectly. In the future, please consider using CommonsHelper, a tool which automates the process of moving files over. Thank you,

Copyright status: File:Turkish road sign 22.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Turkish road sign 22.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Broken templates
[edit]Hi, your current stream of uploads has broken templates, so that they pollute the Images without source maintenance category. Could you fix that? Jcb (talk) 22:14, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Jcb. CommonsHelper has some bugs: it puts a pair of closing braces (
}}
) in wrong place, malforming the output of Template:Information. I tried to fix this (+ to clean up a bit the source code) with VFC. Not sure if in all pages it was succesfull; I'll check them one by one in the next hours. --XXN, 22:54, 20 October 2016 (UTC)- Thanks! As far as I can see none of your today uploads is in the Images without source cat anymore. Jcb (talk) 23:30, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Problems
- The abuse filters had a problem and caught too many edits. This has now been fixed. [2]
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from October 25. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from October 26. It will be on all wikis from October 27 (calendar).
- The "Search" text in the search box will show the name of the project. For example, on Wikipedia it will say "Search Wikipedia". [3]
- About a dozen wikis now have numerical sorting in categories. If your wiki wants numerical sorting in categories you can ask for it. [4]
- Some wikis that want numerical sorting in categories can also ask to use UCA to sort categories. The biggest difference is that characters with diacritics will be sorted together. For example, for most languages Ä will be sorted with A instead of at the end of the alphabet. This is not true for languages that have Ä as a character in their alphabet. Wikis that already use UCA are listed on Meta. Languages that can use UCA are listed on MediaWiki.org. You can test it.

Recent changes
- Administrators, bureaucrats, oversighters and checkusers can now use two-factor authentication. This makes their Wikimedia accounts more secure. This can be turned on in Special:Preferences. There are discussions on how to best turn it on for everyone. [22]
- You can now search for file properties. For example you can search for media type, how big a file is or what resolution it has. [23]
- The latest Collaboration team products newsletter has been published. It has more details about their work than Tech News has.
Problems
- A hacker group is hacking Wikimedia accounts. They can probably do this because users have the same passwords on Wikimedia wikis as on other sites. Please have a password you use only on the Wikimedia wikis and nowhere else. This is especially important for administrators, bureaucrats, oversighters and checkusers. These users can also turn on two-factor authentication. [24]
Changes this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
- RevisionSlider will be a default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Wikipedia. This will happen on 22 November. It will come to other wikis later. [25][26][27]

Future changes
- It will be possible to do cross-wiki search. The developers who work on this are looking for communities that want to test this. [28]
- Hovercards will leave the beta stage. The Wikimedia Foundation Reading Web team wants communities to set Hovercards as a default option for readers who are not logged in. Communities that are interested can say so on the Hovercards talk page. [29]

Changes this week
- When someone tries to log in to a blocked account they will be blocked by a cookie. This means their browser will be blocked even if they change their IP address. This makes it more difficult for returning vandals. [30]
- When you use Content Translation to adapt a template to a new translation it will work differently. You can adapt big templates such as infoboxes. Translators will have control over the template parameters. A first version of this is released this week. It is possible it will not work correctly with all templates. There will be more updates for this soon. [31]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 November. It will be on all wikis from 1 December (calendar).
- Gadgets will have a new option called "hidden". This means you can register gadgets that can't be turned on or off from the preferences page. Hiding gadgets was already possible by using
[rights=hidden]
. You should now use[hidden]
instead.[rights=hidden]
in old gadgets should be changed to[hidden]
