Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. Re categories
[edit]The category system is very organic for areas where we dont have a lot of content, such as samples. Build it out as you see fit, and chat with people who are working in the same area. e.g. you should have a chat with user:Pannage who recently created Category:Sound sample files. The only advice I can give is dont build the category system to be more complex than it needs to be to support the files we have. We prefer to have ontological discussions about large sets of files, as this avoids having ontological disagreements about content that we dont have (or little of) as it isnt worth the time wasted on the disagreement. - I'll reach out to user:Pannage. There are some questions I have before moving in on his category. In the meantime, I'm uploading to Category:Samples of Beats. Thanks for the help. Wllm (talk) 09:07, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Categories are also an occasion for very entertaining wiki editing, almost on par with the Wikidata game. After enabling HotCat (or even cat-a-lot), you can just browse Category:Media needing categories by day and start identifying features of images, tagging them with a category that sounds right just by trial and error in the autocompletion box. --Nemo 07:55, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
