Eight days into Wiki Loves Monuments

[edit]
Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
Thank you for submitting so many photos to the competition! You're one of nine people who have uploaded more than 25 images to the UK competition, and that really helps increase our coverage of historic sites. Photos from this year are already being used on Wikipedia - though it may take a while for the monuments map to catch up so don't be disheartened if some pins haven't turned blue yet.

WLM runs until the end of the month, so please add more and invite other people to take part. The UK is closing in on 1,000 uploads putting us just behind the United States in 14th place out of 49 countries taking part. Let's see if we can jump a few places. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message here or contact me directly at richard.nevell@wikimedia.org.uk.

An update from Wiki Loves Monuments UK

[edit]
Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
More than 300 people have contributed a total of 4,000 photos to this year's competition and we wanted to say thank you for helping us get this far. The competition runs until the end of September, and you can upload as many images as you want - so feel free to document some more sites. Or why not go through your old images to see if you have any others that could be submitted?

Since you've already submitted some pictures to the competition, you might be interested in the banner mini-contest; to take part you crop your images to a 7:1 and upload a new version. You can find out more about how to do that here. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the competition and share it with others! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization

[edit]

Hi Dave, thanks for all the new photos.

I've been doing a bit of trimming on the categories. How categorization works is that we only need the main categories here. Many of the others are implicit in those. So if something has "Canals in Wales", we don't need to re-state "Canals" too. For this one, I took it down from 5 to just 1: If it's in the Brecon basin, then we know which canal that is, which town that is and all the rest.

File:Canal Weights and Measures Office.jpg
Brecon canal basin Brecon Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal Canals Canals in Wales

COM:OVERCAT covers this. There are times when we shouldn't remove related or parent categories, despite this, but they're less common. We only remove if the category is implied, i.e. clearly everything that's in the sub-category will also be a member of the parent category.

MediaWiki categorization is mostly there as a navigational convenience. It's not formally defining, it's just not powerful enough for that. So there are also cases where being in two categories, even with some overlap, can be worth keeping just for convenient navigation. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:44, 24 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2019!

[edit]

Hi

Thank you so much for contributing to the UK section of this year's Wiki Loves Monuments contest, which finished yesterday. We really do appreciate the time and effort you've put in to record the UK's built cultural heritage for future generations.

Your contribution has been been added to our collections here on Wikimedia Commons, and is already available for editors to make use of on Wikipedia and elsewhere. It has also been entered into this year's contest. If you'd like to see your own images, just click on the uploads link at the top right of this page (if you don't see it, click on the Log in option first).

We've received over 10,000 UK entries this year, and it will take a few weeks for our volunteers and professional judges to decide on the final top 10. The winners will be announced by the end of this month, both here on Wikimedia Commons and also on the competition website.

The top 10 UK images will go forward to the international section where they will compete against winners from some 50 other countries. The international winners should be announced here in December.

Don't forget, by the way, that if you're hoping to win a prize in the contest it's essential that you have enabled email in your Wikimedia preferences. If you haven't, you're not eligible to win. If you're unsure, please check here.

Once again, many thanks for your help! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:58, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bore da!

For the first time, Wales will be taking part in the international photo competition Wiki Loves Earth this year. It really is a fantastic competition! All the images need to be upload in June, by the photographer.

Please take a look at our WLE (Wales) landing page for further information:

Having taken photos for Wiki Loves Monuments in the past, I though, maybe, you would like to join us - and keep fit at the same time - or use images you took a while back.

Thanks for uploading! Great images. Can you help me please: I can't find any protection listings for Porthcawl eg SSSIs, Areas of outstanding beauty, Special Areas of Conservation etc. WLE is for photographs taken in these protective sites only. But do correct me if I'm wrong. If they're not, they're still excellent stuff for Commons! Thanks and keep 'em rolling! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 11:06, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think may be right - the Severn Estuary is an SSSI but the protected area only extends down the coast as far as Barry. I'll try to uploaded some photos taken further east along the estuary.

Maybe you could help me - Tyr Hen Forwen in Torfaen is listed as an SSSI but I can't find any directions - advice would me most welcome! Would Cwmynyscoy local nature reserve be a suitable subject?

This is a wonderful event - it's great that Walesis taking part and that there are so many contributions.

Kind reagrds, Dave
