Filters and CA

Shore crabs in a bucket

I usually have trouble seeing CA, but I saw it here. Love the composition though.

My three lenses are all different sizes: 52mm, 55mm, and 58mm. The 52mm one is the macro so I didn't order a filter for it. But I just ordered a polarizing filter for the other two as the shots I take with those lenses are the ones most affected by the sun here. PumpkinSky talk 22:02, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Polarizing filters can also be useful when photographing wet stuff. I had forgotten mine at home when I saw this a couple of days ago, so it could have been better. Fun though! :) --cart-Talk 22:44, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Nautical stuff

Cart, you clearly know a lot about nautical stuff and thank you for voting for the Rudee Inlet and boat photo at QIC. I've linked to it here. Do you think it is worth putting it up at FPC? I'd like to ask @Rhododendrites: opinion too. PumpkinSky talk 22:51, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

@PumpkinSky: No, I would not see that as an FPC. It is a good photo but it is too ordinary, a bit too cramped and without a clearly defined subject. There is also the no-no of the cut antenna, such minor things often disqualify a photo at FPC where folks want it complete and easy on the eye. An FPC must have something that makes that photo pop and stand out from the rest in a category. A good indicator of if a photos is FPC material is how fast it is promoted at QIC. People there tend to go for the most obvious and easy targets first. If your photo is promoted within hours of the nomination, it might be FPC stuff as this comment here shows. --cart-Talk 08:12, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Thank you

It has been a busy few days but I wanted to thank you for the vote.. What photos are you referring to that you also like, if I may ask? --Don (talk) 05:48, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Take a new look at the uploads.. If you would like to nominate the ones you like please feel free. Thank you again Cater..Italic text
@WPPilot: I did link to the photos in my comment at FPC. Didn't you see that? If you click on the "here" in the text it leads to the photos, that is the discrete way it is usually done, but here they are again: File:NHYC One Design Offshore race 6 by D Ramey Logan.jpg and File:2017 Newport Beach to Cabo San Lucas race 9 by D Ramey Logan.jpg. I know that as a sailing man you often go for photos that show off the boats as accurately as possible, that is beauty to you, but the rest of the bunch who are not used to boats tend to go for the overall aesthetic impact of the photo such as colors, lines, repetition etc. As I mentioned in the post above, there is also the no-no of cut partial things on the subject or at the border of a photo. Your photos are technically brilliant, you just need to chose those with the highest artistic value for Commons FPC.
Also please, please, please, the "boring text stuff" on your files needs to be improved. The whole thing is about you wanting your photos (and you) to get noticed among the millions here. Since this site doesn't have an image recognition search function, all people can use are words and if you don't have enough and/or right categories/text/documentation on the file's page, it will just get lost in the crowd. Look at it this way: The text is like an ad for your photos. --cart-Talk 08:28, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

If you care to nominate any of them go ahead. I think this site and I am done.... --Don (talk) 08:20, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

I'm sorry but without additional info for the text and categories, which only you can provide, that won't be possible with you leaving. The photos also need some fixing and I'm not sure you want me to mess with your photos. --cart-Talk 08:35, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

I got wet taking photos again

Well, only a little bit. I was back at the small stream to photograph the Japanese waterfall and the bottom of my tripod legs, shoes, socks, and lower pant legs got wet. I also took pictures of the bridge.

I went there today because it was finally fully overcast, which meant I didn't have to deal the wild patterns of bright sun and shadows in this spot. This in turn meant I had to set the camera to M mode and play around with the shutter speed, ISO, f-stop, and EV settings. I checked auto and it'd want to use an ISO of 3000+. However, there was plenty of light for the naked eye, just not the camera. The photos are here and at QIC. I have my two circular polarizing filters now too. Hope you enjoy them.

FP categorized wrong

I don't feel comfortable fixing this, but you seem to work in this area quite a bit. In Commons:Featured_pictures/Places/Architecture/Religious_buildings#Thailand, the second one from the left with the title "...von Angkor", shouldn't be there. It should be under Cambodia. Could you fix this? PumpkinSky talk 12:02, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

✓ Done Fixing such things is no biggie. If you spot something in the wrong category and it's easy to trace back through the cats where it should be, you just move it. :) Btw, congrats on making such progress with your photos. You are getting good at handling your camera. Well done! :) --cart-Talk 12:12, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Midtone contrast

Hi Cart, I hope there's everything OK in Sweden ;-) I'd like to tell you that a few days ago I saw a video on youtube where they were talking about Photoshop and Lightroom. On of the things they commented was the Lightroom's clarity was contrast of midtones. So, when you are going to use the term in the future, I'll know what want me to do...

Best regards,

On July 25, the 100th anniversary of Nikon, they're supposed to announce a new camera, the name D820 or D850. It's an upgrade to the D810 and will have a 45MP sensor. That's gonna be awful tempting.... ;-) PumpkinSky talk 13:25, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Sad

I was very sad to see your silage bale and Korean fir tree photos didn't make it. I really liked them. PumpkinSky talk 23:06, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

That's just the way it is at FPC. The aesthetics there are very unique and narrow. It's like a cookie cutter way of making uniform photos that I try to conform to and play nice with most of the time, but now and then I find it stifling and boring. Art is so much more than that. Just imagine if Monet had submitted his water lily ponds there... "Random composition, subject unclear", or Turner's Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps: "Too much sky, subject blurry and too small" or Karen Kjældgård-Larsen's acclaimed Blue Fluted Mega porcelain at Royal Copenhagen: "Subject cut, unbalanced compo". Photography is a limitless medium but FPC tries its darnedest to box it in, which is a shame. I think I'll join Code in taking a break from that section for a while, I need to be able to stretch my wings a bit. --cart-Talk 07:29, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Understandable but I'd miss you. Totally agree about the boxing in. One of my peeves is the crowd that is IMHO way too strict on the "too similar" meme. PumpkinSky talk 09:34, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Oh I'm not going anywhere, I'll upload photos as usual. Fortunately, the standards of FPC does not apply to all of Commons and I just need to get out of the confines of FPC for a while. --cart-Talk 10:18, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Clouds and a minor milestone

Yesterday we finally had an overcast day--first one in 2-3 weeks, so I went to my favorite local photo place, the Norfolk Botanical Garden, and got some nice photos. I also just got my 100th QI. Hope you are doing well. PumpkinSky talk 11:34, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Well, congratulations on all the QIs! You've come a long way since you started here. Overcast is often very welcome for plants, I see you made the most of it. I really like File:Plectranthus scutellarioides NBG LR.jpg, with a little better processing I'd vote for it at FPC. It is one of those photos where you need to use a bit of gradient filters and local adjustments. I think you should take a look at these videos just to get to know those tools: this and this. I'm fine, making the most of the summer while it lasts. :) --cart-Talk 12:56, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll look at the videos today or tomorrow. It's overcast again today so if it doesn't rain I'll be going back to the garden. There're a bazillion photo opportunities there. PumpkinSky talk 15:07, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
Sounds nice. Like the rest of us, you are getting into the habit of hoarding photos when the weather is right and processing them later during the upcoming 'bad' season (if you have such in Virginia. ;) ). That makes you a true photographer. :) --cart-Talk 15:32, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
ROFL!! I had a great mentor ;-). I went there again and it was fine at first, got pics of the one you like and a white passion flower, then the darn rain came!!! So I had to cut the visit short. Will work photos and videos today. Coming from you, I consider "true photographer" a huge compliment! PumpkinSky talk 17:46, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
Renamed the photo. En wiki is more up to date on taxonomy than Commons 99% of the time. See new version: File:Plectranthus scutellarioides NBG LR.jpg. Does this meet the Cart standard now? PumpkinSky talk 21:15, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Almost. :) I'd crop away some at the top since the plat there is distracting attention from the main subject. Also, you shot this on a cloudy day so the color temp is a bit too blue. It would look much nicer if you moved the temp just a bit more to yellow/sunny. Otherwise I think you have fixed the sharpness and textures well. --cart-Talk 09:35, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

Tripods and Photoshop

Friday I was out taking photos and the head on my tripod finally got so wobbly (from being a cheap model and me using it a lot) that I ordered a sturdy new one of much better quality. Today I got the Adobe photo package where you get LR and PS for only $9.99/month because I wanted to start doing focus stacking (all that tree bark and flowers as you know). So what's the first thing I needed to do is PS ?....extend a border. I'm already glad I got it. It seems to me the patch heal tool is better in PS than in LR. Hope your summer has gone well. PumpkinSky talk 23:31, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

Oh, my cleome FPC is waiting for a closer. Could you look at it? I noticed the closing backlog has gotten long at FPC so I'll go do a bunch of them right now, paying attention to the yes/no parameter ;-) PumpkinSky talk 23:32, 12 August 2017 (UTC)
Jeez Kiddo, cool it, always so impatient. It's the weekend and there is never much going on here during weekends. On top of that most of the FPC regulars are also a bit drained/tired after the whole "INC Gate" these past few days, so not much maintenance work going on. If you want to make another nomination, you can do that as soon as the bot has closed one of your noms, you don't have to wait for the manual closing. Anyway, I've fixed it and thanks for taking care of some of the backlog now that we are another admin short.
Congrats on getting PS, I think you will find many more helpful features in it. Watch lots of tutorial videos on YouTube. Also good that you got a new tripod. The wobbliness of the old one may account for some of the unsharpness in photos. --cart-Talk 10:47, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
My wife says the same thing about me ;-) Thanks for closing the FPC. I saw "INC Gate" but didn't get involved in it. I'm glad to help closing noms; I actually like doing it. I'm already glad I got PS. I did most of my LR learning by watching Youtube, which is my plan for PS too. I want to go back to that pine tree and try focus stacking that pine bark photo you liked. The QIC bot would have run on my gazebo picture that was in CR last night as Peulle had promoted it on the 11th but someone turned it into a discussion again. I don't know how that one will turn out. Focus stacking etta ket

Hi Cart. When you focus stack, is it required, optional, or good ettiquette to state the image was focus stacked at QIC and/or FPC? Thanks. PumpkinSky talk 23:57, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Info about focus stacking is just as optional and good etiquette as any EXIF info or other facts about how the photo was created. People are curious about how a photo was made, stacked, stitched, whatever, and if you leave info about it, it may help other photographers who are learning about different techniques. I usually leave a note like "The picture is focus stacked from three photos." (see this) but I also forget to do it sometimes. I'll try to get better... ;) --cart-Talk 07:56, 15 August 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Here's my first focus stack upload, from 13 files: File:Pinus taeda 13 NBG FS LR.jpg. PumpkinSky talk 09:19, 15 August 2017 (UTC)
There is a good depth to the image but it's not as crystal knife sharp as you might expect from such a great stacking. Did you remember to first auto-align the layers (the option just above the blend command in the edit column)? Also the f/11 might be a bit too much, actually causing some distortion. When doing stacking f/5.6 to f/8 is usually enough. My bike shot was done with just seven photos at f/8 even if it is much larger, and even that was a bit of overkill. --cart-Talk 10:01, 15 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I did the auto align before auto blend. I read one set of web page instructions and watched one youtube video beforehand. I didn't know I needed to adjust the f-stop because of stacking but it makes sense. When I do regular macro photos F11 seems to work best with my camera. It might also be because of my old tripod. It was so wobbly yesterday I threw it away. New one is supposed to arrive Wed, tomorrow. I'll go back after I get the tripod, hopefully there'll be another cloudy day later this week. Thanks again. PS and LR integration

Hi Cart. I have a question. When I take a set of RAW files in LR and load them into PS as layers so I can focus stacked them, do the stacking, then export to a PSD file, which is the default, and then load the PSD into LR, LR does not find the camera profile; it's been "lost". LR treats it like a JPG, I can manually pick Nikon, but it won't find the lens profile; which LR can do when I load my RAW files. Is this normal for PSD files or am I doing something wrong? Thank you. This probably has something to do with PS be a pixel-level editor and LR is not and PSD not being a RAW format. PumpkinSky talk 22:00, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Whoaow, slow down! I have no idea what you are talking about. This is not something I'm familiar with. My simple camera doesn't have any lens profile and my computer is so old and weak that I can't have both PS and LR running at the same time. If I want to open PS, I have to shut down all other programs or the computer will just freeze. When I do stacking, I have to first finish all the photos to perfection in LR, save them in a folder and process them in PS after I've shut everything else down. Go ask some of the rich guys here, you know the ones with the strong new computers, DSLRs, fancy lenses and whatnots. They speak that language, I don't. --cart-Talk 22:36, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Since the last pine bark photo didn't meet Cart standards, I tried again (same tree, different section of bark). Here it is: File:Pinus taeda 29 NBG LR.jpg. PumpkinSky talk 00:35, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

Hihihi!! I bagged me one of those too on my way to Denmark. I also got a whole series of photos of the north shore of Göta River, I just have to get around to upload them... Taken from deck 8 on Stena Danica, they all look as if they were taken by a drone. :) Too bad it was raining, so none of them will make FPC but because of the unique angle they have, there may be some VIs among them, like this one. --cart-Talk 18:49, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
