User talk:Vastu~commonswiki
Hi - thanks for contributing to commons. You uploaded several images of comic artwork, from Virgin Comics and others - please provide detailed information why you belive these images can be used for any purpose, and who the copyright holder is that granted these rights. Images without sufficient source and license info will be deleted.
Please read Commons:Licensing carefully before uploading more images. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 21:17, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Oh, please also remember that images on commons are only useful if they can be found by others - for that, they must be in a topic category and/or a gallery page. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 21:19, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for adding source information to the images. However, "Generic artwork submitted to many commercial and non-commercial sites, i.e. for any use" is not a free license - you are simply assuming something which is very likely not true. Commons requires an explicite free license by the copyright holder - promotional material, images for press use, etc, are generally not free in that sense: I doubt very much that Virgin would allow the use of that artwork in a comic or game you or I may create, for example.
As I said: please make sure you understand Commons:Licensing, and how companies generally handly copyright of artwork owned by them. The Images you uploaded are still lacking an explicite license by the copyright holder and will thus be deleted. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:59, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. You wrote: I have seen images uploaded directly out of comics before, espeically on wookiepedia, so how does one license them?
Some projects, like the english wikipedia, allow images under the fair use clause. Commons does not allow such images, because those images can not be used freely, but only under very restrictive circumstances (also, fair use is not even applicable to the commons). Please read en:Wikipedia:Fair Use to see how it may apply to the images you want to upload - if it does apply, then upload them to the english wikipedia, and follow the guidelines for fair use images there (i.e. specify context of use, give rationale for use, etc).
Generally, please read and understand en:Free content - that's what Commons (and othre Wikimedia projects) is all about. Please also read Commons:Project scope. I will delete the images you uploaded soon, since they are in clear violation of common's license policy. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 11:41, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
Okay, thanks, I thought the commons was the same thing as wikipedia to be honest - as pictures from here are displayed there... Vastu 12:37, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
- different wikipedias have different rules - since commons images can be used anywhere, we must make sure they also comply to the policy anywhere - which means sticking to the smallest common denominator, i.e. really really free images. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:31, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
File:Templhe.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 01:52, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Vastu. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Vastu~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
