Custom thumbnails?
[edit]Hi, is it possible to create a custom thumbnail for an image that will then be served without further reprocessing, and still link to the main image? The standard thumbnail of this <File:Concorde.planview.arp.jpg> as it appears here W:Concorde is being made a right pigs-ear of due to its sharp edges and plain background.
I also ended up with two identical copies of the file in question (same date), as I thought an upload had stalled but it hadn't. Perhaps someone with Admin privs could delete it, save confusion.
Thanks, Trev M ~ 19:32, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yes. See w:Wikipedia:Extended image_syntax#Link. For example should link to the description page of the original image. Another example: should link directly to a specific uploaded image version. Works in both Commons and Wikipedia. -84user (talk) 16:22, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. However, seems like it's necessary to get further under the bonnet (hood). The following posted on the help desk: I prepared a clean, custom thumbnail 300x229 - same size as specified at W:Concorde - and uploaded it to File:300px_Concorde.planview.arp.q8.jpg. The file size is 14 kB, which gives a presentable, fringe-free rendering on my browsers. However, wikimedia is not serving it without further reprocessing - not even to the file viewing window. So I haven't altered the wikipedia thumbnail source yet, as the file source isn't even displayed correctly. I've set my own appearance prefs all over the place and it makes no difference - we get it at 3 929 Bytes, complete with decorative fringes.
- Come on guys, you can spare 10k of bandwidth to make this unique thumbnail worth looking at, surely? Where's the disable re-rendering option for specific images?? Trev M ~ 21:00, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

So, my view of wikipedia - images at any rate - are being supplied by a diffrent server. The question is whether that server is a third party server, or something within the control of the wikimedia foundation.
Using http://www.urgentclick.com/ip_address_lookup.php I get:
The ip address for upload.wikimedia.org is: 208.80.152.3
I do a traceroute for 208.80.152.3 I get:

Comment? Trev M ~ 02:29, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
- That is strange. Your traceroute for upload.wikimedia.org shows that it goes through 64.214.144.121, which appears to be some server belonging to a network in Phoenix, Arizona. The target upload.esams.wikimedia.org (91.198.174.3), however, is the Wikimedia mirrors in Amsterdam. If you're in the U.S., you shouldn't go to the KNAMS servers in Europe at all; you should be served by the PMTPA servers in Tampa, Florida. Somehow, it looks as if some DNS cache along the way has the wrong settings... You don't have an entry for upload.wikimedia.org in your /etc/hosts file, do you?
- That still doesn't explain why you get served a 4kB version of the file. Perhaps there is some intermediary caching proxy along your route? Or the ESAMS server sees that you're coming from far away and decides to downgrade the file? (Don't know if they do that.)
- BTW, I get the 14793 bytes version from http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d1/300px_Concorde.planview.arp.q8.jpg but then my traceroute to the upload server was a surprise:
$ traceroute upload.wikimedia.org traceroute to upload.esams.wikimedia.org (91.198.174.3), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets 1 upload.esams.wikimedia.org (91.198.174.3) 1.687 ms 1.393 ms 1.402 ms $
- I would have expected to see at least some intermediary hops. (I'm behind a firewall, and not exactly in the vicinity of Amsterdam either.)
- The "access denied" error seems to be a deliberate server configuration; apparently these servers are accessible through http only under the name "upload.wikimedia.org". (I get those errors, too, if I try IP numbers or the esams/pmpta names.)
- Anyway, I would suggest that you try to contact one of the system administrators. Maybe they can figure out what might be going on. Easiest way might be through IRC #wikimedia-tech. Lupo 08:13, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
- This problems turns out to be my own wireless ISP (Vodafone). It's actually quite a useful feature for getting a faster page loads if one is indifferent to the image quality. If anyone comes here as a result of searching the same issue, there's a couple of workarounds on Macs: for individual pages, Apple-shift-R or Apple-shift+browser_reload_button; for ongoing bypassing of the compression feature, try installing this donate-ware app: http://aitne.com/downloads/ByteMeOptimizer-v1.1.dmg (108kB).
Thanks to all who helped me get a handle on this one!
That still leaves the issue as to why Lupo was getting stuff sent over from Amsterdam. I think we can live with that on.... (I'm in UK in case you haven't twigged yet. I'm just nocturnal! ;-> Trev M ~ 01:20, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
- If you're in the UK, I don't understand why your traceroutes show them going through a server in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S. Lupo 07:29, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
- after Pheonix, it's GBLX.NET, washington, passing it back to 62.212.95.129 leasenet, amsterdam.
- While you're here, as you have admin privs, could you clear up the redundant images at File:Concorde.planview.arp.jpg. The version 18:20, 14 March 2010 is exactly the same as the one before it 18:17, 14 March 2010, so it and the revert from it: 18:23, 14 March 2010 can both go, they illustrate nothing but my struggle with slow uploads and are a potentiall source of confusion to users of the file. To clarify:
There should be 3 versions of the image, and ideally, no more, yet:
- the clean-up by me User:Trev M 18:17, 14 March 2010 (should be the current version)
- the clean-up by Arpingstone 13:34, 14 October 2007
- the original 13:42, 14 May 2005 uploaded by User:Arpingstone
I'll evetually get around to adding the details of the changes I made to the image to the redlinked talk page ref I added.
Finally, what would be the best way to add or refer *to* the thumbnail I made at File:300px_Concorde.planview.arp.q8.jpg from the main file? I don't see any mention of it there.
Thanks for your help, Trev M ~ 13:28, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:59, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there. I've changed licensing to better reflect the screenshot's contents, and changed the file's category from Screenshots to Screenshots of Mozilla Firefox 3.6. Then I modified your upload, so that its contents would be in accordance with Commons:Screenshots#Software. Check image history for a bit more. In all fairness, screenshots of free/open source software in a proprietary OS are tricky, because visuals and elements of proprietary operating systems tend to be rather sticky. Oh well :> -Mardus (talk) 00:20, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Ardha Padmasana.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Ardha Padmasana.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

- Please follow the established procedures for obtaining and submitting permissions described at Commons:OTRS and be sure to use the standard licensing declaration shown there. Because you didn't, I'm sorry to say the sort of responses you quote at en:User:Trev M/Permissions are nowhere near sufficient for our purposes. Furthermore, because it's just text on a wiki page, their authenticity cannot be verified. —LX (talk, contribs) 14:10, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
