I'm not sure what you are trying to create with this page. It is in the space reserved for Commons galleries and it is not a Commons Gallery -- galleries are for collections of images with perhaps one or two lines of text. If I can be helpful, please leave a message here. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 14:41, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Although many have already read instructions, but how do you remember your beginnings remember, kills at the beginning it an almost. So I supposed to gather in the commons at least images for articles and illustrations are required. This I do with the uploading and can be viewed at> your own contributions'. And from these files, I then wanted to build such a gallery, where all my pictures can be seen at once. But what am I doing wrong?
But how do I get an image in a wiki article? Do not upload from Commons, but directly from my computer?
Always these newbie questions ... yes, I can think of. I'd rather have even met someone who made me all the way it should look well. Can you make a query such somewhere?
Happy greetings from the 'real' Ruhrgebiet
Peter Trautner, Fröndenberg an der Ruhr
- I'll write in English and use Google to translate into German -- if you have trouble with it, we can ask one of our colleagues who reads both to help. It is always better to communicate on talk pages rather than e-mail, because it keeps a record and it is easier to add links as needed.
- There are two ways you can create your own collection of images.
- A user category -- that is, a category that has nothing but your images in it -- see, for example, Category:Files by User:Jameslwoodward and its subcategories. To do this, you must add Category:Files by User:Trautner-kunstSee (or whatever name you choose) to each image. You must also create the category -- just a blank page with that name and Trautner-kunstSee as the only entry. See Commons:User categories for more information or use mine as an example.
- If you prefer, you can create a user gallery. This allows you to sort the images in any order and add short captions. This would be named User:Trautner-kunst/Gallery or something similar, but it must be a subpage of your user page, like this User:Trautner-kunst/XYZ. Or you can do both. I'm happy to help.
- Second question -- getting images in articles. We encourage all images to be hosted at Commons. The only images that should be hosted at individual Wikipedias (WP) are those that cannot be at Commons because they are Fair Use or otherwise not freely licensed. All of the WP look first at themselves and then to Commons for images, so you can simply add a file to an article with . Of course, that will produce the image at its full size, so you may want to add parameters to the link to control placement, size, and the caption. These are explained (in English) at WP:Images -- there is certainly a similar page on WP:DE.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:48, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

User:Trautner-kunst/gallery
[edit]In accordance with my comments above, I have moved Trautner-kunst to User:Trautner-kunst/gallery. Please don't create Trautner-kunst a third time. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:11, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
thanks, i didnt know this >user:< but its logic. but now it is a gallery and i can fill it an give categories...how long you are working here?Trautner-kunst (talk) 11:19, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've been working on WP:EN since December 2006 and on Commons since November 2008. There's a lot to learn in the first few things you do, but then it becomes easier. Ask all the questions you need -- all of the regular users and Administrators would much rather answer questions than to fix mistakes. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:32, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
So you had 5-year-jubilee this year? congratulations! yes, problem no. 1, I put pictures on commons, but the link from WP goes to an old/ damaged?? version? changing in trautner-kunst/gallery seems to cut the path? problem/ question: 2 y ago i thaught a good idee to call my account trautner-kunst (like my job as artist) but i would like to change it to my normal name. How? Where?--Trautner-kunst (talk) 12:40, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- Second question first -- I'm not sure of all the details, but see Commons:Changing username for a start.
- First question -- two possibilities:
- if you link an image from one of the Wikipedias, it will first look for the image on that Wikipedia, then on Commons. So if an image with the same name is on the WP, then that will show.
- if you make a change to an image, it will not always show up immediately because both your own computer and the WMF servers cache pages and images to reduce the workload.
- Please give a specific example of the problem -- it is not a problem if it is on WP:DE -- although I don't read German, I can make my way around the site.
- I don't understand:
- "changing in trautner-kunst/gallery seems to cut the path?"
- Again, an example is always good.
- Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 14:00, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
well, you friendly changed the name from user:trautner-kunst to user:trautner-kunst/gallery. in gallery are pictures, in the other not. ist it only on my pc two different versions? if i click on trautner-kunst in wikicommons, there are no pics. when i try from wp to click on trautner-kunst commons i will arrive on that site, not on the gallery. for me it seems like two different versions??--Trautner-kunst (talk) 14:25, 24 May 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm still not sure I understand the problem, but here's a try:
- You have three different pages on Commons:
- User:Trautner-kunst -- your user page, which is blank
- User talk:Trautner-kunst -- your talk page (it is in bold because it is a link to itself)
- User:Trautner-kunst/gallery -- your gallery page
- You also have a user page on WP:DE:
- Some of your images are hosted on Commons, for example
- Others are hosted on WP:DE, for example
- You certainly may put all your images on your Commons user page instead of your gallery page, if that's what you want. Most users will keep them separate and add a note on their user page
- along with other information, including, perhaps a link to their WP user page. Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:29, 26 May 2011 (UTC)
