Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:28, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Usefull categories please!!!
[edit]Hi Tony Castle, please keep in mind that only well categorized images can be found by other users. Unfortunately you are categoring very bad. For instance in your File:BAVIERA. Füssen. Cascada del río Lech.jpg not any of the categories works - as the red links show!
- Category:BAVIERA: This category name in CAPITALS will never work.
- Category:FÜSSEN: This category name in CAPITALS will never work.
- Category:LECHFALL: This category name in CAPITALS will never work.
- Category:Cascada del Lech: This Spanish (?) category name for something in Germany (?) will never work.
I urgently suggest to stop uploading for a while. First read Commons:Categories and learn how to categorize!!! -- Ies (talk) 17:30, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
Usefull categories please!!!
[edit]Why do you keep on categorizing wrong even after I explained you are wrong? Stop and think! -- Ies (talk) 17:54, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
Categories on Commons
[edit]Hello Tony!
Thanks for uploading images on Commons. I see that you are quite new here and the categorization system is not the most obvious thing here - but very important.
The basic language on Commons is English. For the beginning: Please use only the correct existing categories. I suggest it would be the best if you put all your photographs of Munich in Category:Munich and photographs of Bavaria in Category:Bavaria. After that you can brows for better categories, or others can do this.
Thanks in advance for helping and uploading.
