No license tag

[edit]

Unfortunately, "Estate Of Peter Copley Deceased, Executrix, Mrs Margaret Copley" doesn't tell us whether or on what terms the copyright-holder has released the image for free use -- so nothing has been resolved, and an automated program or "bot" will be eventually re-add the no-license tag... Hello, SusanWynneThomson!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

If it was painted in 1934, then it could fall under "PD-Art", but probably not CC-BY-SA-3.0... AnonMoos (talk) 16:47, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also should harmonize with File:The Little Bride Ethel.jpeg (which has no date). If Ethel L Gabain died before the 1940s, then the image will fall under "PD-Art" (not CC-BY-SA-3.0), while if she died after the 1930s, then you should provide some indication that Ethel L Gabain, or the estate of Ethel L Gabain, or other copyright assignee, has given licensing permission, or explicitly explain why it's not still under copyright... OK from en:Ethel Léontine Gabain, it seems she died in 1950, which poses potential problems. I'm not sure why you upload different versions of the same image under different names with different sizes... AnonMoos (talk) 17:03, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

your e-mail

OK, but ideally you need to add something to the image description page explaining the situation, because just putting a CC-BY-SA-3.0 tag on an image description page for the painting of an artist who died in 1950 can look suspicious. And uploading a low-resolution scan after you've already uploaded a separate high-resolution scan of the same image doesn't satisfy the copyright-holder's wishes that only relatively low-resolution images be freely redistributed (unless you specifically move to have the high-resolution versions deleted). Finally, under traditional Common law, if you own a painting and have physical possession of it, that doesn't necessarily mean that you also own the copyright to the painting -- in many cases, the artist or artist's heirs would still own the copyright... Removing text from the image description page really doesn't do much. To get it deleted, you must follow the procedure at Commons:Deletion requests to request that it be deleted, explaining the situation... AnonMoos (talk) 11:35, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Oldham_Sweepers.jpeg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

File:Rossetti_Death_MVAS.jpeg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
