Hi - you asked me on my talk page if gallery-pages are absolutely neccessary. The answer is: no, they are not (actually, there is a vote going on about putting images into categories or on gallery pages). I usually put images only into categories, because that is much faster and the automatic galleries in categories are quite nice. Gallery-pages are good if the content should be structures some more. You can create gallery page like you create a page in any wiki. The simples way is: type the title into the search box. If the pages does not exist, you get a link that allowes you to create the page. As to the page contents, look at Traffic sign for example, that's a pretty good gallery page. -- Duesentrieb 05:25, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for providing images to the commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the commons must be under a free license and should be usefull to the wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitely.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a Copyright tag - images without a appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate Categories, so it can be found by others.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted.

For more Information, have a look at Commons:criteria for inclusion and the Community Portal. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the village pump. Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 01:11, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

hi - I dont't mean you have to add the info imidiately (although it would't be a problem - you can add {{GFDL}} or whatever to the upload comment, that works). It's just that i had a look at the images you uploaded in the the past weeks and noticed that many of them do not have sufficient information. Please go through the images you uploaded and have a look - i labeled several of them with "unknown copyright". Thanks. -- Duesentrieb 09:33, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi again - thaks for adding the copyright info. However, i have to be picky about copyright once again (sorry about that - free license is what keeps WikiMedia going, so it's important):

  • When labeling something as Public Domain, please state why it is in the public domain (age? government work? released by author?). It is also important to state the source you got the image from, so the status can be varified by others.
  • on Image:View of Puno, Peru.JPG you wrote: "Picture is presumably on the public domain as there are no copyright signs." This is a popular misconception: The copyright of a picture belongs to it's author, it is irelevant if it explicitely claimed or not. In fact in many countries (all of the EU for instance), the ©-symbol has no legal meaning at all.
  • You created the template Template:PromPeruImages, saying the image have been released for use in the Wikipedia. Please not that this is not sufficient: Images are only allowed on the commons and the wikipedias if the are free to use by anyone for any purpose, that is if they are under a free license. As I don't speak spanish (or portugise?), i can't varify if that is the case (an english summary of the quoted email would help). If the use is restricted to the wikipedia, the images have to be deleted.
  • To summ this up: Pictures can only be placed on the commons if they are under a free license. They con only be placed under such a license by their authors. The only exception are pictures that are PD by law, because of their age or because they are work of a government agency (the latter is to my knowlede not true in the EU, but is in the US).

Sorry to be picky about this, but as I said, free licensing is important, this project would not be online today without them. -- Duesentrieb 19:13, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply! Ok, then:

  • The authorization for the PromPerú images states that anyone can use these images as long as credit is given.
Great! Please change Template:PromPeruImages to make this clear (say something like ..."allows anyone to use the image for any purpose" or some such). A short english summary on the page with the email would be good, too. Actually, I asked for a translation on the Commons:Village pump, maybe you wuld like to post a quick comment there.
  • What should we do about Image:View of Puno, Peru.JPG if we don't know its copyright status? It seems the owner of the page is also the owner of the picture's copyright and since he hasn't made any indications about copyright, he probably doesn't mind?
Well, generally, if you're not sure about the license of an image, don't upload it. Not explicitely claiming to copyright can not be interpretet as "silent consent". Best thing to do now would be to ask the author of the image and tag the image as "unknown" until then, with the additional note that the author has been contacted.

Thanks for being understanding about this! -- Duesentrieb 22:57, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Missing license info in your images

[edit]

Hi - some of the images you uploaded are missing license information. Please have a look at Commons:Untagged_images#Numbers_and_Symbols and add the missing info. Thanks! --EugeneZelenko 15:15, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The following images do not have a source:

You claim that these images are public domain but you need to add where you found the photos so that others can verify this or understand your reasoning behind. Thuresson 18:09, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

University logos

[edit]

I notice that you have uploaded several university logos the last day and that you claim that the university in question allows free use. However, you need to add your source for this claim, preferrably a web link, to somewhere where this is verified. Please remember that writing UNIVERSITY ALLOWS FREE USE OF THIS SEAL with capitals in bold print is not a verification of your statement. I have checked a few university sites but they all claim "Ulima todos los derechos reservados ® 2005". Thuresson 04:58, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

You wrote: "I didn't know logos had restrictions on their use, since I see them used all over the web. But yeah, since I am done with the commons, you might as well delete all the images and be happy.". I'm not saying they have restrictions, I'm saying it is up to you to show that they do not have restrictions. If you can show this, and if they really are public domain that should be easy, then the images should stay. Thuresson 05:43, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Locatin map of cities.

[edit]

Hi, SF. I've noticed you've uploaded a lot of very good location images of cities in Perú. ¿Shall you put them into the Category:Maps of cities in Peru? Thank you very much. --Guillermo Romero [@] 17:33, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Cusco city coat of arms.PNG. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Pay attention to copyright
File:Wong logo.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with {{subst:OP}} and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
