Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:57, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:95siki-kansen.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Akagi launch or Kaga launch (or another aircraft carrier?)
Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 20:17, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi there, Soica2001! I am an English speaker and am trying to generate a translation for you to understand me. I have found a photo that was in the scrap book of an American aviator, Commander William Balden, who was a pilot in an air group assigned to the USS Enterprise in 1944. While he was in the Marianas he came ashore and found a couple of photos that had been in the possesion of the Japanese navy. He placed the photos in his scrap book, which eventually was donated to our national archives. One of the photos is very similar to a photo you uploaded two years ago. The photo Balden had shows a wider frame shot, and it is the reverse image of your photo. Looking at the photo, it shows an A6M Zero fighter taking off of the deck of a carrier, and I believe the carrier is the Kaga. If you could take a look at them I would like to know what you think. I believe the two photos are from the same negative, though the prints we are looking at were found in far different locations. I have included a photo of the Akagi on the same day for comparison. Thanks for your consideration.Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 19:41, 29 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'm sorry reply late. This image is a reprint from certain Internet. Source was also written on the Internet page. Source was also written on the Internet page. The Internet page, link has expired already. I do not make a book of Henry Sakaida. I guess your claim is correct maybe. --Soica2001 (talk) 00:35, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
- Well, thank you for the reply, Soica2001. In this case, we decided the aircraft carrier Soryu was most likely. I appreciate it. Cheers!
- まあ、返信Soica2001していただきありがとうございます。 ここでは、最も可能性の高い空母蒼龍を決定しました。 私はそれを感謝しています。乾杯! Gunbirddriver2 (talk) 01:19, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
[edit]Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
- Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
- This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
- Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Mikebetu kumaaa flag 2009.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
