I gave it another try. This time I used the two original images and tried to create the icon again. It's not looking perfectly the same — I think. But now it's rendering everywhere and is displayed correctly in every application.

Disgarbaging SVG

Hi Sertion, I just dedected that you are doing a good work by killing sujperfluous bytes in SVG graphics. Some time before I created the Category:SVG Simplified, and as an example I categorized your File:Nicht-DIN Fotografieverbot.svg therein.
You should feel free to add a file into that category, when either it has a reduction ratio about 0500 or less, or it is a good example for reduction strategies with a ratio ≤ 5000.

600/3000 = 0.2 (a fifth); a very good value, the ratio would be written 2000.

The "Trinkwasser" size before you started was 6668 bytes (7 KB), you brought it down to 554; so the reduction ratio is 0830 (554/6668 = 0.083083383); it seems a very good example!

But, when I load it down I cannot read it well, neither with wordpad nor with notepad. You seem to omit all linefeeds. It is your decision how you make it, in my opinion it might be better to keep it more readable. And: The file should always checked error-free SVG. Hi guys and thanks for the invite to this discussion. In my humble opinion linefeeds should be omitted, because it is an easy way to lower the filesize and browser can read the file faster (that's the most important point, this also applies to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.). If you use an editor like Notepad++ you can beautify the code easily (Ctrl + Alt + Shift + B). So this should not be an issue again. Other good approaches to minimize the filesize are CSS element references (by declaring entities in the doctype, example at File:Wikipedia Banner.svg). Something I always wanted to explore more is the use of svg:xlink. But this can make a file hard to edit, so this may not be an option to reduce the filesize. We should always keep maximum compatibility in mind by reducing the size of a file. Regards Fleshgrinder (talk) 22:44, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi again. Following my calculation, I come once more to a much better reduction ratio of the "Trinkwasser" drawing; by correcting that, it is additionally avoided to place it just between the peaceful neighbourhood of swastica and starofdavid ;-)

@Sertion, when I found some errors in File:Drinking water sign.svg, I copied the path from your "no drinking water"; it is now another size, but the ratio is a bit better there, it's 0810.

@Fleshgrinder, I did not know about Notepad++, now I installed it and I shall try to use it. May be I will ask you at your talk page, when I am in need for further help. Thank you!

I am thinking that it is a personal and individual decision whether to insert linefeeds or not. My idea is that single byte saving at any price is not such a need, removing of mere nonsense can result in much more reductions. Something that's really important: Never omit the viewbox-attribute! If you embed SVGs directly within an HTML-page using the object-element browsers need the viewbox-attribute to ensure the graphic is scaling correctly. Without the attribute different errors (depending on the browser) will occur. If Wikipedia isn't using the librsvg to render PNGs in the future, all SVGs must be uploaded again. Hi Fleshgrinder, I am astonished - it is the first time I am told that. I never found exact specifications, as far as I know a SVG file needs

1. the xml declaration: version, encoding (standalone seems not necessary)
2. the doctype declaration seems not to be necessary
3. the namespace declaration: xmlns (plus xlink and/or event, if referenced) contains the width/heigth (and/or viewbox ; version and a lot of other items can be specified)

but I saw viewbox as a possibility, not as a need. And embedding SVG directly into HTML instead of referencing a file is not supported by present Wikipedia. Please tell me when I am wrong (we can continue on my or your talk page).-- sarang♥사랑 12:35, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

A long time ago … but today I remembered our discussion an thought that it's my duty to answer. The viewbox is necessary for referencing SVGs within HTML if you want to autoscale them by only setting the width or height in the referencing tag or via CSS. I also found a related W3C discussion (@see http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-svg-wg/2010JulSep/0133.html) and I tested it in several current browsers and the problem still exists. So I suggest to always set <svg width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0 100 100"></svg> to ensure that the SVGs are also autorendering in current browsers. Armed Forces Special Weapons Project

You took my image of the Manhattan Project should sleeve insignia and made a very nice SVG out of it. I was hoping you might help out again. I have a shoulder sleeve insignia for the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project File:AFSWP Patch.jpg for a new article I'm writing which I drew by hand and which looks er like it was drawn by hand. The colours are right and the design is right but the lines are not smooth and sharp. Also, the shape is a bit off. Although the sides are curved, the corners should be more pointed, like this patch. The font size of letters of different scripts are not similar. For example, Meitei letter K (ꯀ) is a little bigger than Devanagari letter K (क) & Bengali letter K (ক) when observed by putting together adjacent. For typing, it might be like that. But for designing in image formats, like you have said, better tool possessors can fix the size. Haoreima (talk) 17:40, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
