Not Butterflied fried turkey spam as planned
[edit]This was going to be my ace in the hole (I think that is an American card game saying about cheating, pulling a high card from the sleeve or maybe keeping it in your hand past the time that it made sense to play it, which is not cheating) in case the butterflies started to be too many and not in focus, etc. It never happened and I also could not bring myself to eat this stuff -- it has dried up in the 'fridge. The original spam, that is a different bird all together and probably it would have been lightly fried and eaten.
Butterflied fried turkey spam was a very funny name for an image to me -- carol 18:58, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

The process of oviposition
1 Tapping with her antennae the wasp listens for the vibrations that indicate a host is present.
2 With the longer ovipositor, the Wasp drills a hole through the bark.
3 The Wasp inserts the ovipositor into the cavity which contains the host larva.
4 Making corrections.
5 Depositing her eggs.
6 Depositing her eggs.
7 Not pictured here is the male who just taps around looking for females.

Ovipositing
[edit]Hi Richie. I'm a bit short of time at the moment (too much work -> reporting deadlines). So just a quick link or two...
...and a little bit of (copyrighted!) text: Species attacking wood-boring larvae must penetrate considerable depth of wood to oviposit, and have attained an extreme length of this organ. This requires an involved process of manipulation to attain the required position for drilling and to exert the force necessary for penetration. Riley (1888) gave an extended account of the manner of oviposition of Megarhyssa lunator F. In this species the hind legs are used to bring the ovipositor into a vertical position. The sheaths of Megarhyssa are arched dorsally over the abdomen and serve to guide the ovipositor proper, but they do not penetrate the wood. In the early phases of the act, the forcing of the basal portion of the ovipositor into a coil in a membranous intersegmental "sac" between two of the abdominal segments permits the terminal portion to be brought into a perpendicular position for the beginning of the drilling process. This provision for manipulating an ovipositor of exceptional length is also found in Leucospis in the Chalcidoidea. Abbot (1934) described in detail the mechanics of oviposition, and Cheeseman (1922) described the oviposition of Rhyssa persuasoria L., and Brocher (1926) discussed the manner in which it was accomplished by Perithous mediator Grav.. Pizza !
[edit]Hi Richard,
I personnaly don't make any nodal point adjustement since I'm not equipped properly (I'd like to get something like a Nodal Ninja). It's OK if most of the elements are far enough from the camera since the parallax errors are then negligible, but more difficult for indoor panoramas. I've had parallax errors in my Image:MuseeOrsay 20070324.jpg and Image:Vitraux Cathedrale Metz.jpg but Enblend was able to keep mostly the parts which overlapped seamlessly. For the few remaining errors, I either let them or clone them out (they are usually very small, so it's very easy, and I did that only twice I think).
A tip when stitching pictures with parallax errors is to set the control points on the background elements in priority. I've found this gives the best results. If you use Enblend3 you can set the parameter "--fine-mask" which sometimes helps too. There's also the "last resort" trick to set an alpha mask yourself and give it to enblend (I did that once on a wedding pano with a lot of people moving).
Diliff says he uses smartblend in his user page.
Hope this help.
Since I'm here, here is a question of mine : do you get your butterflies while they are asleep ? at morning time ? Thanks ! Benh 19:43, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for you message. The images were taken with my underwater Olympus. It does not take raw images. Please let me know, if under "raw" you meant original image. Thank you. --Mbz1 19:29, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Anaglyph images
[edit]Your anaglyph pictures are driving me insane! I haven't used one of those things in years, and I can't find mine... I'm just curious; do you use colored filters to make those pictures, or software? If you use software, how does it judge the distances to create the 3-D effect? Anyhow, I'm sure the pictures are spectacular. Just wish I could see them... Thegreenj 22:23, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

40D

English please :) I came over to ask what I think is a similar question? Did you just upgrade to a 40D, and if so how does it compare to your 400D? Do you have any pictures with the same subject and lens, but different bodies? I'm thinking of going to the 40D from my 350D, but I'm not sure if it's worth it, how big a change it will be in quality. The biggest pros are the focussing and better graphics processor I would imagine. Does it handle ISO better too? Thanks, --Dori - Talk 20:55, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- You should rent/borrow and test ... and maybe test with the new 450d, too in april. Superficial changes/improvements : slight lower noise, tonal value priority, live view, overall speed, changable focusing screen as 1d, larger and brighter mirror reflex finder, bigger batteries, more comprehensive editing menues, better body. Mine was a present of my employer as i need it to make tons of textures and hdri backgrounds for 3d models, where i need live view for more efficiency. --Richard Bartz 10:38, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Valued image candidate test reviews
[edit]Hallo Richard! I passed by the München stadium some days ago on the Autobahn while heading for Salzburg. I did not get the best view as I also had to keep my eyes on the road, but anyway, an unusual and eye-catching piece of architecture, much well represented by your recent photo thereof. Anyway, that is really a side-issue. The reason why I am contacting you is because I would like to hear if you would be interested in test reviewing some of the macro photographs presently on test review as Valued Image candidates (VICs)? Reviewing VICs is IMO a little more demanding than reviewing FPCs and QICs and it requires some specific domain knowledge of the subject and some more willingness to look for related, competing material on Commons. Therefore it is quite important to have reviewers available with diverse backgrounds in order to do competent reviews. As I see it you could be one the reviewers the project is looking for, especially when it comes to macro photography and critters, and your assistance would be very much appreciated. With anaglyph-depleted grüsse, and best wishes -- Slaunger 06:48, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Your oviposition images, which I just saw on WP:FPC would also be a nice candidate for a Valued Image Set! It would be interesting if you would test nominate them (otherwise I'll probably nominate them, if you do not object). -- Slaunger 15:03, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- With some delay I have (test) nominated your set of oviposition images. The review page is here for your reference. I hope you do not find that I use some of your images to test the concept. -- Slaunger 19:58, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- It would be real cool if you'd geocode the images, and, alternatively, if you do not want to reveal the exact location, add some info on a regional level of where you observed this in the image pages. Cheers, -- Slaunger 20:01, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: anaglyphs
[edit]Neat. :) However as someone who doesn't actually own 3D glasses, the image with the match head is more interesting to me. ;) When I pick some up I will go over all your fine work. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:53, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Question: do you think it would be "fun" or good for commons to not acknowledge Dori as photographer of this image? -- carol 02:30, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
excellent!

Anaglyphs
[edit]Hi Richard,
It's been a while since I last tried anaglyphs, but what I do is, I believe, more or less the same as you, at least on the first steps. I first take two pictures, one for each eye, and then merge them with Photoshop. Now the problem I encounter is how to make one picture visible for one eye while the other one is not. If I recall correctly, I used to delete the red channel of the left-eye's image and the blue and green channels of the right-eye's image (or maybe it's the other way, don't quite remember). But I only got black and white images, I lost all information of the rest of the colors. How do you do to preserve colors? I'm almost able to see your images correctly and comfortably without 3d-glasses!
PS: I have some awesome anaglyphs of Mars made by the ESA. If I can (correct licenses, etc.) I'll upload them here :-) - Keta 15:53, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
- It worked, thanks! - Keta 16:50, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
QI sorting
[edit]Hallo Richard,
Vielen Dank.

Diapause
[edit]This word is not in the wordnet dictionary nor in Webster 1913; that in itself is not a bad thing but I have some problems with some of the words that are not there but are in the dictionary.com collection of definitions. I read a scathing review of that dictionary recently, one which I tend to agree with. The entry for the word at en.wikipedia was great though and the sentence that you authored here is very eloquent. The dict server did suggest another word which is similar and to be found in both Webster 1913 and wordnet -- diapason and I really preferred the 1913 definition. -- carol 01:05, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- So then i tune my organ and sing a little song: "Diapause oh diapause, please make you done and gone .. diapause, bad diapause, please make you done and gone ... (refrain with a technobeat) My sensor is ready, my sensor is glowing ... my sensor is ready, my sensor is glowing ... You like my song ? --Richard Bartz 13:40, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- Honestly, my dad had Kraftwerk on his reel to reel; the vinyl says it was released in 1974 here and I am not absolutely certain but strongly thinking that he had the reel to reel before 1974; I would prefer one bad singer with an out of tune acoustic guitar over poorly rendered german-techno. My parents threw me into this taint when I was quite young :) -- carol 14:21, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Diapause is a predictive strategy that is predetermined by an animal's genotype. Diapause is common in insects, allowing them to suspend development between autumn and spring, and in mammals such as the red deer, where a delay in attachment of the embryo to the uterine lining ensures that offspring are born in spring, when conditions are most favorable.
- Hibernation. I spent a couple of years studying the habits of a species of homosapien Linuxae europia; this species actually comes to life in that delay time perhaps living within the wombs of their computers -- and then disappearing when spring came. The farther north the species was living, the greater the effect. -- carol 14:26, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Master Photographer Project
[edit]Hi Richard and thanks for bringing it up, I was thinking about that for some time. I like your idea, but I feel that we need to bring a few things up and address some issues:
- The amount of FPs does not necessarily show how 'good' of a photographer you are - it just illustrates how:
- much you invested in your equipment (not that I have anything against it - I feel that a photographer should invest some money in his gear if he is dedicated or passionate enough, I'm just saying, how do we avoid spoiled kids whose parents bought them 5Ds and 24-105mm EFs for their birthday and who think are the best photographers in the world [yes, they exist])
- valuable the images are to Commons
- much the people liked it
Maybe another measure of the 'goodness' of the image is whether its a QI or not. What I suggest is that we should make the following assumptions:
- An FP is not the best way to judge, but it still is sometimes a good measure
- A QI is not the best way to judge a photographer, as it's often about the gear (yes, it depends on how you use the gear, too, but you can read about that in an hour online), but it also shows that the photographer is able to take good, solid images with nice composition and DOF
Hence, I think that:
- We should create a photographer's guild, but make a point/ranking system.
- Everyone applying would have to write an application to those who are already in it, asking to enter and explaining why they would want to enter.
- Those who are in it should receive some benefits, such as being part of the ranking system and maybe we would make an internal forum or something like that.
The point system would work on the basis that an FP is worth 1 point, a QI 0,5 points and a VI 0,5 points. The photographers would be arranged according to rating. Those are just some thoughts I have, please answer with what you think on my talk page. And also, voting for (or against) my FPC [2] would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

I am almost certain the picture has not been identified correctly, it is not Heliconius hecale but Dryadula phaetusa.
See [3], [4] and [5] for Dryadula phaetusa underside. And [6], [7] for Heliconius hecale underside. Pro bug catcher 15:22, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you very much Pro bug catcher for your help. Next time i will ask you before. Do you often read your discussion page ? regards Richard
- No problem. No I don't read my discussion page on commons that often. But I do check my talk page on en:User_talk:Pro_bug_catcher a lot more often, leaving a message there is a better idea to contact me. This edit [8] by an unregistered user put me on the trail in this case. I'll be happy to check pictures when you ask me, but there are so many insects that I won't always know the answer. Regards. Pro bug catcher 18:18, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Hello, What exactly do you mean with "out of focus" I was extremely happy that I was able to get a (in my opinion) sharp photo of this bird. The background is of course not sharp, but the bird itself is very sharp. When I look at the pictures on your user page, I see exactly the same. Why not let people decide themselves whether they like this picture, instead of tagging it with a template. Magalhães 14:16, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- I wanted 2 protect your picture against a battery of oppose votes .. i erased the fpx tag right now .. so you can see --Richard Bartz 15:07, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- Ok. thanks for that. Perhaps I will nominate the picture for most valued photo, as suggested by one of the voters. I still so not understand why everybody feels it is out of focus. Do you mean the background? but when I look at the photo below. I see a completely blurry background? Magalhães 13:54, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- It is the foreground which is out of focus. Please compare with this one or this one. Plenty of other good examples here -- Alvesgaspar 14:06, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Maybe you might help?
[edit]Hello, Richard,
First of all I'd like to use the oportunity and to tank you one more time for everything.
I wonder, if IYO this image quality could be improved. I have a raw file. I guess what I meant to ask was, if you could improve it, if I send you a raw file. It is not for FP, but just to make it look better and for me to see what really could be done, if one has a raw file. I'm not good with photo shops at all. I sure will understand, if you do not have a time or not interested in working on the image. Thank you.--Mbz1 01:13, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- Oh my gosh ! The amount of noise is truly H E A V Y :-). Email me the RAW file and i will see what i can do 4 you. --Richard Bartz 14:12, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

--Richard Bartz 15:55, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Man könnte sicherlich viel voneinander lernen. --AngMoKio 09:52, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- Rauchen/trinken ? --Richard Bartz 14:12, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
:-)--AngMoKio 15:39, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
--AngMoKio 19:16, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
