Autopatrolled rights given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you.. - FitIndia Talk Mail 10:10, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne
[edit]Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.
Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.
If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:
Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:
I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 22:01, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow
[edit]Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. If you haven't done yet, please consider signing up for the event and add your questions to this page. This will be our first virtual meeting in 2021 and I'd be super happy if you could join. - Hi PsamatheM, would you mind replacing the file by its 60fps original version? The file size isn't really relevant on Wikimedia Commons, as lower-quality versions are automatically generated and are selectable from a menu in the built-in player (original file or re-compressed 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, 240p, 180p, 160p, 120p versions). Please upload media in the highest quality you'd like to freely license. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 18:11, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: I tried to upload the 60 fps version many many times originally and it kept failing at the "Publishing" stage i.e. uploaded OK, Description, Caption, Categories put in fine then "Publishing" for an age before failing. Tried over a couple of weeks at different times always the same - so eventually created the 30 fps which uploaded ok. I assume the failure was due to some copy process timing out (or server processing time limit) but that's a guess. Tried asking for help in Village Pump but no suggestions. Happy to put 60 fps webm on a (my own) web server if somebody else has some different way to upload it. (It was on my server but taken down now as nobody wanted it). If you (or anybody) has alternative upload means let me know and I'll re-generate 60 fps version and post on public area of my web server. Let me know. PsamatheM (talk) 18:21, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: If you want it for other use then the webm is actually created from an mp4. I have better mp4's than on my personal web site (which are built for web publishing) and happy to provide either/both best webm and/or best mp4 version under same CC BY-SA 4.0 license (every compression/conversion reduces quality). Nice to have the Commons version at 60 fps if you (or anybody) know of a way.PsamatheM (talk) 18:27, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, if you could provide the original video to me in any format (a link via email?), I'll transcode it to a high-quality AV1-webm. Perhaps that results in a manageable filesize. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:05, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: I'll upload it to my personal website and put a link up here (but it'll be tomorrow) and reply here with link (as once you've downloaded it I'll delete it off my server and if anybody else downloads it fine, it's released under CC BY-SA 4.0 and my only reason for webm is Commons format requirements). I transcoded the mp4 to webm using Handbrake (same as I then did to create the 30 fps one which works fine). It was not the Commons transcodes that were failing but the copy temporary upload to "published" i.e. the "Publishing" stage. (Only I'd ask that the attribution stay with me for the newly uploaded 60 fps version). PsamatheM (talk) 19:29, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you very much :) Yeah, of course – I'll transcode the file 1:1 including the watermark and won't modify the attribution on Commons either. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:51, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: Whilst getting the original, I re-created the 60 fps and chunked upload seemed to work this time so the later upload on the original page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:02-Grey_Squirrel_2021-09-13_nX2.webm is the 60 fps version - so should all be sorted. If you want the best quality MP4 it's available from https://psamathe.net/temp_images/2021-11/02-Grey_Squirrel_2021-09-13_nX2.mp4. The 60 fps uploaded webm is also at https://psamathe.net/temp_images/2021-11/02-Grey_Squirrel_2021-09-13_nX2.webm. I'll leave the psamathe.net webm and mp4 fot a week (or let me know when you've finished). Any issues, let me know. PsamatheM (talk) 12:23, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks again :) I've downloaded the MP4 now; feel free to remove the file from the server again. I'm now testing multiple encoding options in parallel, with highest CPU settings, overnight. When I have a good result, I'll overwrite the Commons file first, then revert myself if the result has unexpected problems, and I'd also be fine with you reverting me. The file is on Commons then, and anyone interested can still take it from the upload history. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:24, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: The one up on Commons now is the 60 fps version which seems fine (Chunked Upload worked this time uploading new version). The latest version was created with Handbrake with high quality settings. That said, watching the video I can't tell quality difference (mp4 to 60 fps webm). The camera recorded in mp4 so it all gets lossy. PsamatheM (talk) 20:31, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- yeah, my current AV1 encoding process is mostly an experiment with the new codec. It may be somehow worth it, theoretically, in the long term (even higher fidelity to the original at the same filesize). Thank you very much for the successful 60fps upload, and congratulations to the main page appearance. :) ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:35, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: Unsure what benefit the version you have uploaded has but it's over 4 times the size. Quality appears identical so only difference seems your upload is much much bigger (On my Mac with good internet connection (fibre) I notice a significant delay starting playing plus pauses and jumps, bits of video skipped none of which happen on the 60 fps upload I did. Without any apparent advantage is it best to revert back to the much smaller 60 fps version? Technical users might spot the reasons and appreciate that there are earlier version but many will just see poor performance viewing, etc. PsamatheM (talk) 12:59, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- Sure; it was probably mostly an experiment. But please wait a moment before reverting, as I think we've found a bug in the thumbnail generator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T296562 – we may want to wait for the developers to have a look at this, possibly on Monday, before reverting. In general, I completely agree. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 13:01, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: 1. Thumbnail: Unsure which thumbnail you mean but on the page I get the main video "poster frame" OK and in the "File History" I have good thumbnails for all 3 versions. If this is what you are seeing wrong, caching issue?.PsamatheM (talk) 13:09, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: 2. I don't have to be the one to revert it (the it's a collaborative project not mine to determine hence my message here and communication rather than just doing like I own it all - I'm very reserved about reverting things others have done. PsamatheM (talk) 13:09, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, you can see them? Okay, this is a very interesting case. I can't see them from my mobile connection nor my desktop connection, and trying to save the page in the Web Archive also results in an error, so it's at least not a block on my IP address. Can you open https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/02-Grey_Squirrel_2021-09-13_nX2.webm/1920px--02-Grey_Squirrel_2021-09-13_nX2.webm.jpg just fine? ~ ToBeFree (talk) 13:18, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: Thinking a bit, it might be me who has a "caching issue". I don't know how thumbnails are stored but from looking at the page html, it looks like the previous 2 uploads' thumbnails have been moved to an "archive" directory so my displayed thumbnail for the new upload might be the cached version of the previous upload. If this is the case it might be an issue anyway, not in this case as the video content is the same but if the video had been trimmed or colour graded or something more significant then using the local cached version of the previous upload would be based on the wrong video. Of course I might have completely misunderstood what is going on (I never looked at the html before the current upload) PsamatheM (talk) 13:29, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, that may well be. I hadn't thought about this possibility, but it seems plausible exactly in the way you describe. If you're interested, you may like to try opening the link from various devices and connections and report the results in the Phabricator ticket. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 15:44, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: It's not just the thumbnail. For me the main poster image has now disappeared (I must have been seeing a cached version before - not there is nothing! (I don't know phabricator so can't easily add to the report. I suspect there is something bad wrong with your encoding. PsamatheM (talk) 20:20, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: And all the MOTD thumbnails have gone bad as well. PsamatheM (talk) 20:23, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, you're now seeing what I saw all the time :) I'm really interested in the developers' answer to the bug report. The error message text ("Too many requests") doesn't exactly sound like an encoding issue, but I suspect it does have something to do with the file size or the codec. We'll see! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:34, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- (regarding Phabricator, your normal Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons account is a Phabricator account as well, and after logging in, there's a simple and quick box for adding a comment below the other comments at phab:T296562.) ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:36, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, a lack of AV1 support on the thumbnailing server is confirmed to be the issue; they're running a Debian version that's older than "oldstable". I have now restored your version. :) ~ ToBeFree (talk) 20:35, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

You're invited to provide input…
[edit]Dear fellow member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
At our last meeting end of August, we talked about getting in touch with the Wikimedia Foundation and offering our help for improving Wikimedia Commons. Today, I invite you to provide your input on a draft open letter to the Foundation. Over the course of the next ten days, we'll further improve the text together, before inviting people to sign it. If you're interested in providing input, please engage in the discussion on the talk page of the draft.
In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos! All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 08:42, 20 September 2022 (UTC)

Question from the CPUG Board
[edit]Dear user group member,
I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.
With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.
That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.
However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:
Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022
We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023
[edit]Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,
I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.
All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you
[edit]Dear fellow Commons photographer,
I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.
At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.
All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
