File history from EN wiki
[edit]Please only upload the file history from EN wiki if the Commons file was based on (or is exactly) that file. Explanation
[edit]Since this is the only page I can edit now, I might as well explain more about this account. I use this account to help record information about images by checking the NowCommons tag on each image on the English Wikipedia to find the image on the Commons to write the information to. Exporting such information is a necessary step in the image exportation process, but unfortunately it may not work all the time in all situations, and the most likely reason is that the NowCommons tag is incorrect. However, now, if the information leads to that conclusion (such as finding the words "Swedish Wikipedia" in the description), I could now check other Wikipedias if the file exists. I will also say in the edit summaries "If this is incorrect, feel free to revert this." Poccil 19:47, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
- That's not good enough. You're making hundreds of edits and someone will have to manually verify the accuracy of each - that someone should be YOU, not someone else.
- If you want I guess you could change your text blurb from 'this image originates from' (etc.) to 'this file was marked as equivalent to {en file} with the {{Nowcommons}} template', that would at least not be inaccurate. ¦ Reisio 07:01, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

- First I'd like to say that I appreciate that you're doing this. The NC backlog is huge for precisly the reason that no-one can be bothered to veryfy that all the information has been copied across. However I'm not sure that the current method is the best. For instance I'm not sure that the list of contributors to the text in the image is necessary after all I think it's just the upload log thats required under GFDL. Original title (changed to title on EN Wiki) is however a good thing especially for the images that have non english names on commons and lack an english description. The image text section gives problems since it normally contains lots of templates giving no real new information.
- As an example Image talk:GiantLeopardMoth.jpg the text section contains an
- NC tag (not valuble information)
- The descriptive text (valueble information)
- A chunk of code that was the uploaders personal licensing template which in "nowiki" format makes almost no sense.
- In fact the only usefull information that has been transcribed in this case is the title, description and uploader on EN wiki all of which was information already in the image description (except original filename).
- Firstly the script could probably be set to ignore the NC/NCT tag. And also there should be some sort of text in the end saying "this talk page can be deleted once the relevant information has been entered into the image page". And finally for all of these pages would have to be put on a list/category so that someone can go through and check that the information is in fact relevant.
- The problem is that all of this would require a huge workload for someone afterwards BUT I'm not sure that there is another way (except going through image case by case) to decrease the backlog on En Wiki. Also acording to GFDL (me thinks) not only the upload log but in fact all of the old versions (i.e. the actual images need to be uploaded to the file history). /Lokal_Profil 13:15, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Regarding [1], why can't images and their history be moved to Commons directly? Aren't they both stored on the same servers, in the same formats, on the same kind of wikis? Tip: Categorizing images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]][[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
