Hi, I noticed that you have put up images from the George S. Stuart's Gallery of Historical Figures, a site you maintain, on Commons under the said category. You have licensed these images as Commons Creative 3.0. However, on your site, it is stated "Images © copyright 2006 Peter d'Aprix". The copyright of these photos taken by d'Aprix belongs to him. He has to be the one who releases the images as CC 3.0, not you. This can be rectified by having d'Aprix himself email Commons with express permission for those images per Commons:OTRS. Otherwise, Commons cannot in good faith host those images. Jappalang (talk) 10:52, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just realized Mr Stuart is still living, and this poses another conundrum. I have raised the issue for discussion and offered solutions at Commons:Village pump#Gallery of Historical Figures. Please take a look. Jappalang (talk) 22:55, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have requested the necessary e-mails from Mr. D'Aprix and Mr. Stuart. I have also requested agreement to change the copyright notice on the main website to be consistent with the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license provisions. Mharrsch 06:04, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Army Combat Art Program

[edit]

Hi Mharrsch, is there any evidence/proof whether images such as File:VietnamCombatArtCAT01Blum1966GrenadeThrower.jpg or File:CAT01Blum02 elephantgrassLR.jpg are really free resp. PD-USGov as you have tagged them? Painting can hardly considered an official duty of a soldier. Also, the article where you put these images in, doesn't mention this aspect. --Túrelio (talk) 21:35, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

All of these paintings were produced by artists commissioned by the U.S. Army's official Vietnam Combat Art Program while the artists were serving as soldiers in the U.S. Army with their specific orders to produce images of the U.S. Army in the Vietnam field of operations. All of these images were provided to me specifically for use in Wikipedia by James Pollock, one of the soldier artists who assures me all of this art which was produced by order of the Army by soldiers selected for that purpose is definitely in the public domain and in the official collections of the U.S. Army. - Mharrsch (talk) 21:45, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thank. What's really important is that it is/has to be PD (or any other free license). Any permission restricted to "for use in Wikipedia" is without any value here on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 22:05, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As a photographer myself and Wikipedia editor for a number of years, I am well aware of the license restrictions for images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for use in Wikipedia articles. These images from the Vietnam Combat Artists Program produced under orders for the U.S. Army are definitely "public domain" as I have specified. - Mharrsch (talk) 15:24, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Luigi Bazzani

[edit]

Thank you so much for your wonderful assistance. I know your Pompei page is controlled by a project so I just wanted you to be aware of the images I added to Wikimedia Commons. There are some additional images that I suspect were produced by Bazzani in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum that are labeled "artist unknown". I did not know if you might have access to a list of his works so those could be acknowledged, too. They are mostly sketches of wall frescoes and the museum does not provide any information about which structure they were referencing. I have also uploaded images produced by Bazzani of Roman monuments and other Italian cities as well as his Neoclassical scenes of ancient Rome. I've added those to a gallery on Luigi Bazzani's English Wikipedia page as well that could be copied to your Italian Luigi Bazzani Wikipedia page. His name also needs to be added to your surname disambiguation page. Mharrsch (talk) 14:18, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

--Fausta Samaritani (talk) 08:03, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fausta, I am aware of Maiuri's book as thirteen of the images I uploaded were scanned from it. I am also aware of the 2013 exhibit and some of the images I uploaded were from a press release about that exhibit. It is my understanding researchers have added Bazzani's images to Google Earth so you can see the locations he painted - at least for those images that were in the exhibit. I plan to check auction sites for more of his images that may be coming up for sale. Since he worked in Pompeii for over 30 years there seems to be quite a few of his paintings floating around. Mharrsch (talk) 14:26, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ho fatto alcuni errori nel mio articolo su Luigi Bazzani su wiki in it.

Thanks so much for the additional information. I have already uploaded his paintings of the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Portico of Octavia. I only found two of his paintings of the House of the Vetti. I'll see if anyone else photographed the paintings at the National Museum and the Archaeological Museum. Do you live in Rome or France? Mharrsch (talk) 17:15, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Io vivo a Roma e ho collaborato a 55 wiki del progetto wikimedia, in particolare a wikidata, wiki in francese e in italiano, wikicommons. Buona serata.--Fausta Samaritani (talk) 17:53, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

--Fausta Samaritani (talk) 16:45, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at your family page for the Bazzani family. On English Wikipedia, we use what is called a disambiguation page for the surname Bazzani which lists links to pages for each person in English Wikipedia with Bazzani as a last name. We have, at the moment, only a skeleton page for Cesare Bazzani with his birth, death, and list of his works. I will try to research him further and provide more background as time permits. I want to add more pages about structures in Pompeii and this will take up much of my time. I assume you are working on a Luigi Bazzani page as I didn't find one on French Wikipedia. Hopefully, the page I built for him on English Wikipedia will be helpful to you. Like you I would like to add more about his set design but don't know where I will find that information. I do have access to JSTOR so maybe I can find out more up there. Mharrsch (talk) 17:09, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. -- ~riley (talk) 02:24, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Gentile Mharrsch,

Grazie ancora e a presto,

Lorenzo, thank you so much for your offer. I have sent an email to direttivo@wikimedia.it with my physical address here in the U.S. and asked them to forward my email to you. I mentioned to them that I have been working the past two months on an English translation of "Hauser in Pompeji: Casa del Principe di Napoli" by German archaeologist Volker Michael Strocka. Professor Strocka has granted me permission to freely distribute my translation and I am in the process of formatting it for Kindle devices. I plan to prepare an extensive article on this Pompeii House for English Wikipedia. I also plan to upload some of its images to Wikimedia Commons since U.S. copyright law considers photographs of two dimensional artwork in the public domain to be public domain copies. I thought you might be interested in this as well. Mharrsch (talk) 14:27, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Remember to create also an .epub version of the ebook, so that it can be read with non-Kindle ebook readers. If it is under a CC-BY-SA compatible license, you could even put it on Wikisource, from where it could be downloaded in different formats including epub. - Laurentius (talk) 17:09, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't sure where you wanted my opinion so I posted it on the deletion request page. I checked the file and do agree that it appears to be an exact duplicate of another detail file of Alma-Tadema's larger original painting and should be deleted. Mharrsch (talk) 12:22, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I posted my formal opposition to the deletion of the specified file on the deletion request page. Other files on the commons have disclaimers stating that certain works are in the public domain in the US and other jurisdictions with a time requirement of 70 years or less after the death of the artist but are not available for use in jurisdictions where the elapsed time requirement is more than 70 years. Thanks for uploading File:Bronze statuette of Roma or Virtus 50-75 CE Getty Villa.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Hello, Mharrsch.
Did you manage to reach George Stuart and Peter d'Aprix so that the files could be kept ? It's really a shame not to be able to display these beautiful images anymore...
Best regards. --Guise (talk) 12:39, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Guise, George Stuart, who is now in his mid-90s, donated his figure collection to the Ventura Art Museum and there seems to be confusion about copyright. I tried to explain that copyright deals with authorship not ownership but he thinks he needs to consult with the museum's attorney. That is what is taking so long. I'll send another reminder to Peter d'Aprix, the photographer, who is dealing with Mr. Stuart and the museum. (I live in Oregon and they are all down in southern California.) If you could delay deleting the images for a bit longer, I would appreciate it. Mharrsch (talk) 14:40, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Peter d'Aprix has already replied and is willing to just have Mr. Stuart sign a permissions statement. I've prepared a permissions template with list of the files for Mr. Stuart and sent it to Peter for Mr. Stuart's signature. I'm not sure Mr. Stuart has an email address so I have instructed Peter to print out the template and have Mr. Stuart manually sign it, have it photographed and return it to me and I will forward it to the permissions address. I hope this will be sufficient. I know they usually want the permissions email to come directly from the copyright holder but he has not personally embraced email or other internet-based technologies. If the permissions must come from him directly I will need a snail mail address for permissions communications. Thanks so much for your patience. Mharrsch (talk) 15:33, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Mr. Stuart did have an email address after all and a permissions email was sent today Ticket#2022110710012402 Mharrsch (talk) 23:00, 7 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information, Mharrsch ! Alas, the files have already been deleted and I'm only a Commons uploader, not an image-reviewer (I'm interested in this case because I had displayed the file representing Gilles de Rais' sculpture in the corresponding French Wikipedia article). In any case, the files will certainly be restored once the authorization has been verified. Let's keep our fingers crossed. :) --Guise (talk) 08:57, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Guise, just received word that the permissions have been verified and the files have been restored. I checked his biography on Wikipedia and it looks like I will have to recreate the image gallery there. You may have to reinsert the image(s) you are using on French Wikipedia as well. Sorry it took so long. It is the most complicated permissions case I have had to deal with. Mharrsch (talk) 15:09, 17 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
