Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

NGC /IC objects pictures

Sorry, I only saw your reply after an admin had already deleted the image; you are right, but in this case you should not claim the image as your own and state that you are releasing it under creative commons; instead, link the permission in the "permission" field, state the actual author in the appropriate field, and select the correct licence. I have corrected the description of File:Sh2-24_legacy_dr10.jpg as an example. Please correct the descriptions for your other uploads, otherwise you run the risk of them being deleted due to the incorrect information. Cheers Andel (talk) 19:59, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But they are my own in a sense. I create them using the FITS-files and don't just copy the image. When you click on the image in legacy viewer, you can click on cutout (FITS). I then edit the link with e.g. &width=1500&height=1500 to get the correct size, extract the images with SAO Image DS9 and create the final image with Photoshop Elements, including giving the image a final touch. I just link to legacy surveys image and not directly to the FITS-cutouts link because it would link to a pop-up download-window and it would be hard for other people to find the image in legacy viewer. I have seen others use such links on wikimedia and I find such links directly to a pop-up download-windows deeply annoying. I don't think erasing my contribution is ok here. I am sometimes working for hours on one image :/ If you have a recommendation to make this more clear in the files and maybe know a bot that can edit hundreds of wikimedia files, then that would be helpful. I never used bots on wikipedia by the way, but maybe this would help me.

The page where this file comes from https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/maps.14245 clearly has the cc label on top and under the article information you can read: "© 2024 The Author(s). Meteoritics & Planetary Science published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of The Meteoritical Society. This is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited."
