Sound Logo

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

• Our next virtual meeting will take place on Saturday, August 27. At this point we have two presentations lined up:

• The aperture and its (less known) effects (XRay)

Categorisation

Hey MB-one, Hope you're well, So at present I've gone through Category:Mercedes-Benz Vario buses and have categorised everything however I'm absolutely stuck with 2 images and so I was wondering if you could possibly help me please?<br>

File:Wikimania 2016 by Kritzolina 02.jpg I'm convinced this vehicle is a Category:Newcar Smile on Mercedes-Benz Vario as they share the same bonnet and imho it's too unique to be another brand but could be wrong<br>

File:Ski-bus02.jpg - I've looked around and found this advert - they're similar but they're not the same,<br>

@Davey2010 Thanks for reaching out. I'm not an expert in coachwork but, I'd agree that File:Wikimania 2016 by Kritzolina 02.jpg seems to be a Newcar Smile. However, I'm not so sure, that File:Ski-bus02.jpg shows an Auwärter Teamstar, since that uses a different grill design. And while we're on the subject, File:Haggis Adventures coach (YX07 AYL) 2007 Mercedes-Benz 815D (Vario) Optare Toro, Killin.jpg looks an awful lot like a Sprinter-based bus, not a Vario. The very last image you mention is a Ferqui Toro and the article only mentions Mercedes-Benz Vario, Looking online people are stating it's a Vario [1][2][3] but people on Flickr tend to be wrong occasionally so I don't know if they've all acted like sheep (ie followed each other) or whether this is somehow a Vario ?, If it doesn't look like a Vario then it's not a Vario is it?, Thanks, –Davey2010^Talk 11:59, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Dabei können Bau-, Boden- und Kulturdenkmale fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Sieger 2021 – Schloss Langenburg

Vergangenes Jahr hat Matthias Süßen mit einer Drohnenaufnahme von Schloss Langenburg im Morgennebel gewonnen. Welcher Fotograf wird dieses Jahr sein Nachfolger?

Nach WLM 2022 sind wieder zahlreiche neue Denkmallisten entstanden – zum Beispiel die Denkmallisten in Cloppenburg oder in Oldenburg.

Wir haben dieses Jahr unter dem Motto „Klein aber Oho“ drei Sonderpreise für Kleindenkmale ausgelobt. Damit sollen Fotos prämiert werden, die die unterschätzten Kleindenkmale wie Grenzsteine oder Bildstöcke zeigen.

Außerdem laden wir Dich ein, ab Anfang September 2022 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Diese bewertet die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelt so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im Oktober tagt, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Deutschland. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Hi MB-one, Sorry to bother you, Hope you're well

So at the moment I'm on a man-made mission to remove all images from Category:Mercedes-Benz buses in the United Kingdom as most images are already in country-subcats (ie Plaxton Cheetah on Mercedes-Benz Atego buses in the United Kingdom‎, Mercedes-Benz O530 Citaro buses in the United Kingdom‎ etc etc however I've come across a few Sprinters -

Hi @Davey2010,

the Category:Brighton & Hove (bus company) also has subcats for depots and bus stops. Those shouldn't be categorized as buses, since many images of those don't depict any buses. I plan to move all images with buses into the respective subcats in order to tidy up the whole area (e. g. sort as many images as possible by manufacturer and model).

Hello MB-one, If you're not planning on identifying any of the images you've moved to Category:Double-decker buses in the United Kingdom could you please move all of the images you've added back to their former category (Category:Buses in the United Kingdom) as I was slowly in the process of reducing the number of images in that category.

I'm planning to classify as many images as possible by manufacturer and model, but it will obviously take some time. We are talking in total about a healthy five figure number of images to do. Classifying by height is certainly not the final step, but it greatly helps to identify the specific bus models later. On the other hand, moving images to an unnecessarily less specific category doesn't make any sense to me. What would be the benefit in your view? MB-one (talk) 20:11, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi, Oh okay in that case please accept my apologies - I thought you moved them and that was it (ie expecting others to categorise them - sadly i've come across people like this during my time here so if you were genuinely planning on categorising them then I apologise for assuming bad faith here,)

I agree it's not going to be a 5 minute job - admittedly i've been using VFC to mass categorise them all but sadly in all of the images you've moved as far as I can see none have any keywords (make/model) so those will have to be done manually :(

In regards to the double/single decker categories - I've been removing these from identified vehicles as I see it as "the make/model are already subcats of the single/double deck categories so it seems sort of pointless including them" but on the other hand to some extent I would agree with its inclusion as I would assume not everyone knows what single/double deckers are but then again I'd imagine they'd Google it ?, Having over 2-3k worth of double decker images in one category doesn't seem like a great idea either (I would assume as well that anyone looking for SD/DD images would look through the subcats instead of looking through like 100 pages worth of images),

Stagecoach

Hi MB-one, So I notice you've been busy moving files into Stagecoach fleet number categories (ie Category:Stagecoach bus 15453‎) - My only concern is that your average editor and uploader would only categorise the file to say "Stagecoach Manchester", "ALX400 on Dennis Trident" and "High Street, Manchester" - They're not going to try and find the fleet number of the vehicle and do it that way as that takes a lot longer.

As the years go down the line the newly added vehicles at Cat:Stagecoach Manchester will slowly build up and would need to be categorised into fleet numbers again,

Credit where credit's due it does look tidier but IMHO tidier isn't always better - the old categorisation system worked and didn't need to be made into a complicated procedure like it has now .... Before I say anything I'm not lecturing you and I'm not having a go but please please please in future get consensus before you want to mass move files,

I've took no joy from moving the files back today and truth be told I didn't even want to do it however we all have to seek consensus for things and as I didn't agree with it I felt my only best option here was to revert - Of course I could've started an RFC or asked the community however I wasn't the one that mass-moved a whole ton of files so the onus shouldn't be on me,

I also feel sorry for Geof Sheppard who spends their time adding registration plates and fleet numbers to category keys (ie [4]) and whom has essentially added these keys for nothing as they've all now been lost/erased. (I had only remembered myself when I was 4 categories from the end by which time it was way too late to do anything),

Sorry I might not have been clear - If you go to here and search "NDZ3020" you'll see the reg plate at the end of Category:Alexander RL on Volvo Olympian buses in the United Kingdom (ie Category:Alexander RL on Volvo Olympian buses in the United Kingdom|NDZ3020)

however if you search for the same here you'll see there's no registration plate at the end of the RL/Olympian category

These sort keys help make sense of large groups of images which fall into a single category. So by using the fleet number as a sort key in the 'Stagecoach South' category, multiple images of the same bus will be next to each other and similar buses with adjacent fleet numbers become grouped together in the category page.

If you are creating categories for individual buses, could I suggest you make longer names as just having the fleet number might not be helpful for people who are not familiar with the numbering sequence, say Category:Stagecoach 18311 (KX05TWJ; Alexander ALX400 on Dennis Trident 2). This would allow for the possibility that the number might get reused on a different bus, for example Scania N250UDs are reusing fleet numbers previously carried by Scania N113s.

I'm all for splitting large categories but keeping similar buses together would be helpful. Take a look at Category:Plymouth Citybus to see how that category (with well over two thousand images) has been split into separate categories for different models. An alternative would be simply something like Category:Double deck buses of Stagecoach South which would probably be appropriate for a category with fewer than 400 images (at present!). @Davey2010 I see, that the sort keys were removed from the individual images. But since they were included in the new categories by fleet number, they weren't lost.

@Geof Sheppard Thank you for your suggestions. Adding additional information to the category name, seems like a reasonable plan. The same applies to categories, that would group buses of the same type by the same operator. But then these types of categories aren't mutually exclusive. Take MAN Lion's City DD of Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe as an example. What works there could easily be applied for Stagecoach, etc.

I would support "Category:Stagecoach in X, KX05TW; Alexander ALX400 on Dennis Trident 2)" as that way whoever categorises these should hopefully put in "Stagecoach in X" and then be met with company name and then reg plates ... Of course if the vehicle gets transferred then the cat name would be wrong and 1-40 images would need to be moved,

There's no winner here as with my way; you have the transfer issue, with Geofs way those wont ever be categorised as presumerably no one would know the 5 digit fleet numbers, With MB-ones way again primarily fleetnumbers and the old way just looks a mess,

I wouldn't put a 'Stagecoach 00000...' in a Stagecoach company category because, as you say, buses get transferred between companies. I envisage each image would have both the bus category and the local operator at the time the image was taken.Geof Sheppard (talk) 16:02, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

@Davey2010 please refer to Alexander Dennis Enviro400. "Alexander Dennis Enviro400 on Dennis Trident 2" and "Alexander Dennis Enviro400 (integral)" is the exact same thing ("The Enviro400 chassis replaced the Dennis Trident 2 (and continued to be badged as the Trident for a time)"). You're right - Looking at https://www.buslistsontheweb.co.uk/ they're either labelled as "AD E40D" or "AD Tt" on Chassis (AD for bodies), For as long as I can remember I thought they were bodied Tridents but looking at the EN article they don't appear to have ever been built on them at all, there's just been a misconception that they were,
