Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:03, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Lechthaler. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Lechthaler~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell

File:Villiger Virginia 2018.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

--K@rl (talk) 06:57, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
Renaming/moving categories
[edit]Hi there,
I saw your edits to Category:KZ Mauthausen concentration camp complex and its sub-categories. I noticed you renamed a lot of categories, and on the old name, you left a note like "See 'Category:Some new category'". In the future, it's best to create a category redirect instead of just leaving a note. You can do this by typing Some new category
. This allows users to get to the new page more easily, and ensures that bots and automated tools will recognize the redirect.
I saw you had a few cases where you listed multiple categories (e.g. for Category:SS-Sturmmann Mauthausen-Gusen, you wrote "See 'Category:SS-Sturmmann' and 'Category:SS personnel at the KZ Mauthausen concentration camp complex'"). In those cases, just redirect to the category that is more specific/relevant to the title (so for Category:SS-Sturmmann Mauthausen-Gusen, you'd put SS personnel at the KZ Mauthausen concentration camp complex
).
You can read Commons:Rename a category for more info about category redirects, or ask me if you have any questions. Thanks, IagoQnsi (talk) 16:30, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for your advice, I greatly appreciate that. Lechthaler (talk) 21:21, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
I've emptied (and will request its deletion) the category. None of the plaques is actually related to the Spanish Civil War, but to the Spanish people killed in . Most of the dead had fought in the Spanish Civil War and had to leave the country upon the Francoist victory, but these are not Spanish Civil War memorials. Thank you for your understanding --Discasto talk 06:53, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
- Your line of arguments makes sense. Do you have a suggestion for what a category for memorials relating to the Spanish victims of Mauthausen might otherwise be called? Regards, Lechthaler (talk) 10:30, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
- Memorials to the Spanish victims, Mauthausen? --Discasto talk 21:20, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
- Done. Thank you Lechthaler (talk) 22:23, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

Anna Maria
Lechthaler (talk) 11:22, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
