Upload from Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello, is it possible, to upload this photo to Commons? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Highway_401_18_lanes.jpg . I do not understand the complicated licence stuff and thus not know, how to upload photos from other people correctly. .... I have another question: Is it possible to "collect" many photos to a cathegory, without cathegorizing every single photo? Thank you for your help -- 84.132.88.182 12:54, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, it is not possible to successfully upload that photo to Commons because it is a copyright violation - http://www.flickr.com/photos/clashmaker/241325999/ specifies "© All rights reserved". Bots can categorize many photos into a category.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs)
Thank you for that help. I never had known about this violation. - Could you give me a hint, which bot is able to do so? -- 84.132.82.118 12:31, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
User:Flickrlickr should be able to help with uploads from Flickr, and User:Orgullobot should be able to help with categorizing many photos into a category. More specific questions get more specific answers. Which "many photos" do you want to place in which category? Thanks!   — Jeff G. [edit]

I checked with the Unix diff command. These files are completely identical (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Buffalo_City_Hall_LOC_116266pu.jpg and http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a8/116266pv.jpg). Please double check yourself. For now I am restoring the tag. Balcer 21:38, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, the duplicate has been deleted. Balcer 21:40, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

JavaScript und Flickrreview

[edit]

Hi, I've hacked together a little javascript tool called Flickrfixr. It will appear in the toolbox on the left for image pages that contain the flickrreview template. It consists of three links, "OK" (license is good ATM), "other" (license is good, but different), and "bad" (bad license on flickr). Clicked upon, the latter two will ask for the old commons / current flickr license, respectively. Then, the page will go into edit mode, replacing the existing flickrreview with the new one, showing the diff. I think that was roughly what you guys wanted, right? --Magnus Manske 19:56, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Magnus! Unfortunately I am unable to get this to work. Lcarsdata 20:02, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ignore this, I can. This is perfect. Thanks. Lcarsdata 20:05, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Badname usage

[edit]

Thanks for your explanation of the use of the badname tamplate. The fact is that the image wasn't in a license compatible with the Wikimedia Commons policies untill just two weeks ago I personally asked the author to change the license. Then I re-uploaded the image with a new name because I think that's important to give all the images a name to identify them at the first approach (Perugia 101 is better than IMG123456 but definitely worse than Perugia piazza IV novembre). Following your instructions, I added a duplicate template, though I have had to insert a rename in the first upload. If you think that it's necessary, you could insert a credit to the original uploader at :Image:Perugia piazza IV novembre.jpg.--Grifomaniacs 20:30, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was mainly that the two images are, in fact, not identical. One is slightly sharper than the other - it is not up to an admin to choose which one to delete. I recommend you nominate it at COM:DEL. Lcarsdata 20:33, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They were absolutely identical, then an automatical bot decided to sobstitute the image I uploaded with a larger version available on Flickr. As I think that the spider was programmed to do not make mistakes, you could opt for the second version. --Grifomaniacs 20:42, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, Lcarsdata. In these days I've been relating this case to User:Mac9, who was the uploader of the other picture you've reviewed. He agrees with me about the bigger resolution of the pic that I uploaded. Therefore I think that there aren't any problems yet and you should speedy delete Image:Perugia101.jpg. Yours faithfully, --Grifomaniacs 17:47, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That image does not exist. Lcarsdata 17:57, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Now (to be honest before you posted this reply) I've checked the link. I hope that won't exist soon, but at the moment there is indeed.--Grifomaniacs 18:31, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have deleted the image, me accusing the image of being non-existent was probably a caching error. Lcarsdata 18:51, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you very much. However I'm afraid to have posted here without having been reading your advice to do not fragment the discussion. Best regards,--Grifomaniacs 19:20, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry. Thanks. Lcarsdata 19:23, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you changed your mind, fragmented discussions are such a pain to read. :)   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:43, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
