Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Kherouef titre.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Do not upload incorrectly licensed images to Commons
[edit]Please do not upload incorrectly licensed images to Commons as you did with File:Tjaiemhotep.jpg. This image is released by the British Museum under a license that is not allowed on Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). Commons requires that images are allowed to be used commercially. This license does not allow that.
Also, please only say you are the creator of images that were taken by you. You did not create this image, the British Museum did. Merytat3n (talk) 01:41, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
- ok Kathleen782 (talk) 03:35, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
- Hi so it says " Kathleen782 (talk) 13:31, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
- so yeah i can upload from metropolitan museum pictures right?? Kathleen782 (talk) 13:32, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
- You can only upload images with licenses Commons accepts. Licensing is the most important thing for Commons. Read the licenses allowed and understand it. Not all images by the Metropolitan Museum of Art are ok for Wikimedia Commons. For example, the Book of the Dead of Gautsoshen you uploaded is not currently licensed for Commons. If you look at the Metropolitan Museum page, it says it has licensing restrictions, so it is not allowed on Commons. Images of her Book of the Dead are already on Commons. They were uploaded before the licensing changed.
- When you upload images, add the web link where you found it as "source" not just the name of the website.
- Please take care in your editing. Merytat3n (talk) 07:21, 1 November 2023 (UTC)

File:Anhay.jpg
[edit]Hi. You uploaded File:Anhay.jpg and said it was from the Brooklyn Museum. It is not from the Brooklyn Museum but a cropped version of this image from the British Museum. You know British Museum images cannot be uploaded here, we already talked about this. I see you did not put the web link to the source of the image. We already talked about this too and you managed to do it after we talked about it. If this is simply a mistake, okay, again please take more care in your edits. Permission for File:Relief of Ahmose.jpg will need to be verified
[edit]It needs to be verified that the copyright holder of File:Relief of Ahmose.jpg gave you permission to upload it to Commons under an appropriate license.
You can find more information about it on the Commons:Volunteer Response Team page, specifically "Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?" and "If you are NOT the copyright holder". I will copy the relevant parts here but please read the whole page carefully.
Ideally you do all of this before a file is uploaded to Commons. Contact the owner of the image and ask them to release the image under a license allowed on Commons. If they say that they do release the image on Commons under an allowed license, you can upload it to Commons under the license they specify. Place the this template "Permission Pending" on the file description page in addition to the license chosen by the copyright holder.
The copyright holder will need to make a clear statement of the license so please get them to use this email template in their reply to you. Ask the author to forward the email with their clear statement of permission to permissions-commonswikimedia.org (or a language specific address), including the full header and any previously exchanged correspondence with you, and a link to the image on Commons. Make sure to ask the author to include information on the origin (source) of the file and its license.
A VRT volunteer will check the email to verify that the permission statement is sufficient and authentic and change the tag to say that permission has been verified. Merytat3n (talk) 21:20, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- The guy's account says the images are free to use on his account though Kathleen782 (talk) 21:29, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
- He does not specify that the images are released under a Commons license. He says they are free to use but what does that mean? For personal use? For commercial use? All of the above? Uploading images to Commons involves the law (copyright law) so verifying copyright holders and image licenses is really important because it is legally binding.
- He says he "created" the photos but did he? I know for a fact he does not have the copyright for most, if not all of these images. This image of Keki belongs to the Louvre Museum and doesn't have a license allowed by Commons. This image of Ramose's coffin comes from this blog where they specify the photos are "copyright (c) 2014 by John Freed". Some come entirely uncredited from Wikimedia Commons like this image of a statue of Nefertiti is File:Nefertiti Standing-striding Berlin.jpg and this stele is File:Akenatón y Nefertiti Berlín 01.JPG.
- Additionally, isn't his profile picture an image from the Brooklyn Museum that you yourself uploaded here as File:Senmut.jpg?
- Again, Wikimedia Commons involves copyright law. Always assume images you find online are not free. Unless the image is released under a permitted Commons license by the copyright holder, it cannot be on Commons. Merytat3n (talk) 22:44, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
