You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Copyright question

Why does File:LEWIS FLAG 1 (resized).jpg say "by John Stanley" but then lists the author as "Bruce Robinson"? Which is correct? Wknight94 ^talk 00:55, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I would have thought that it was entirely obvious: the photograph was taken by Bruce Robinson, the file was uploaded by myself John Stanley, therefore it came from me. I have entire copyright for use of the image...incidentally, could wikipedia make contacting back any more complicated or is it simply a case that it's editors do not wish to be challenged?

It was given to me by the photographer, how else does one acquire copyrights for photographs if not through permission of the photographer? If you want to check this go to: www.brucerobinson.com, email him, ask him about the photo shoot he did for "PROUD" and then he will tell you the situation. Or just delete the image if you're going to continue to be deliberately obstructive...I was under the impression wikipedia existed for the benefit of its users, not for the glorification of its editors.

• John, we get a lot of people trying to add images they don't have rights to, sorry you are getting a lot of hassle, but I'll help you through it. Please sign your edits with four tildes like ~~~~ that makes your name and date automatically. Also try to assume that people have good faith.
• Wknight94, to your concerns, I believe Stanley has full rights to this image, as it is a promotional picture for his play. I asked him to provide an image that he had rights to release into public domain or under GFDL. Gigs (talk) 05:00, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

The only way that I see such an image can be hosted here is if the copyright owner confirms this via OTRS. The onus is on the uploader to confirm acceptable licensing if there is doubts (as there is in this case). Thanks --Herby ^{talk thyme} 11:54, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

What would he send to OTRS? A work for hire is owned by the person paying for it in the US and in the UK. Stanley is the copyright owner. Gigs (talk) 04:04, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Proof that he is copyright owner & freely licenses the image for hosting here. Given that this is a "commercial" image & so there is a lack of clarity on licensing this would be necessary. Thanks --Herby ^{talk thyme} 06:26, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

What sort of thing would prove that? Do you just want an email affirming that he's the copyright owner and that he licenses it here? Seems kind of redundant but I'm sure he can provide that. Gigs (talk) 20:03, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes - that is the way it works. While OTRS looks like it is for other people to get permission from the copyright holder here on Commons it is often used by people who hold the copyright of works whose licensing is ambiguous to confirm that they are the holder & are happy to freely license the image(s).

While it does seem bureaucratic it does protect copyright holders from people who are basically trying to steal images. Bear in mind that people used images from Commons globally not merely on wp projects. Thanks --Herby ^{talk thyme} 06:36, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the Volunteer Response Team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the Volunteer Response Team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org now. Please quote the file name ("LEWIS FLAG 1 (resized).jpg") in your email.
