the tablet press

[edit]

That was a really impressive animation! My mind reels when trying to think about drawing and making the frames so that they work together and move so smoothly. -- carol 13:48, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much. I used Adobe ImageReady, which makes the process fairly easy. There's probably some free programs that can do a similar task. Jeff Dahl 00:12, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
GIMP Animation Plugin could do this -- it is where my appreciation for the maths starts though. I became very used to carrying those books around with me -- for the reference. And, I am contradicting myself here because I said very often that the reason I liked physics was that everything started with f=ma so it was easy for the memory.
I am surprised that if a software makes the process so easy that more people aren't making such impressive animations. Perhaps you are not giving your part in the making enough acknowlegement? -- carol 01:30, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flag-map

Hello. I saw you created nice Zimbabwe flag-map. Can you please tell me how to do such a flag-map? This kind of pics is still missing for many countries and I would like to create some. Thanks. - Darwinek 12:22, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images of Egyptian gods

[edit]

hello there Jeff Dahl,

needless to say probably that your svg images of Egyptian deities blow my mind, very cool. Do you plan on doing maybe Apis or Image:Amun and Mut.svg seated etc. one day as well? Also Nut is missing, the starry sky. thanks alot and keep up your good work. sincerely Gryffindor 10:52, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much. As for Apis, I haven't seen a suitable 2D drawing to base it on. All the drawings are based on the best available 2D pictures/drawings from the New Kingdom temples and tombs, which are at the peak of refinement. I haven't come across a suitable one for Apis yet, but if you have one please point me in that direction. As for the seated Amun and mut, I could give it a try, but I haven't yet done a standard seated man or woman yet. As for Nut, I haven't decided quite how I want to do that one as yet, but I think the New Kingdom tombs should have a good model to work from. Please let me know any others that are missing, as I want to have thorough coverage of every deity. Thanks again! Jeff Dahl 13:28, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For Apis how about you use the image of Hathor as cow Image:Hathor cow.svg? I am also confused about some colourings used, such as Image:Sekhmet.svg with a green face? I thought she was a lion, aren't they yellow or something in that direction? Are there various versions of depiction? Bes would also be good, although maybe a black&white version would suffice, how about from this one Image:Louvres-antiquites-egyptiennes-img 2884.jpg. cheers Gryffindor 12:24, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shanghai flag

[edit]

Hi there! I noticed that you have created some Chinese flags for Commons. Right now, I'm working on a article on Shanghai at Swedish Wikipedia, and it struck me that perhaps we might need a Commons version for the Shanghai International settlement. I don't know how to create this, but I wonder if you might be willing to do it? I have pasted two links below for reference:

Pharaoh's Canal

Hello Jeff, I have used your map Image:Ancient_Egypt_map.svg to illustrate an article about the Pharaoh's canal (the ancient precursor to the Suez Canal). I did modify your original work for that purpose, it's been uploaded to Image:Pharaoh's_canal.svg. Let me know should there be any problem. Game Designer wants to use your artwork

[edit]

Jeff - I am facsinated by your portrayals of Egyptian Gods. I am prepping a game based on the Gods of Egypt and would like to use your artwork, but I need to be able to alter some of them and there are a number I require that you have not created. I have not been able to find a way to contact you and hope that you can contact me. I am easily found on BOARDGAMEGEEK as YOUR BUDDY CHESTER. Or you can email me directly at cehendrix<at>sbcglobal.net. Please contact me at your earliest convenience. I have 69 of the different Gods that appear in the game and would love to use your basic style as the benchmark.

Hello! I was just looking at File:Snellen chart.svg, and noticed the source says it is in the public domain, yet the description page puts copyrights on it. We don't copyright public domain images, so I wanted you to clarify that. Thanks. :) TheAE talk 04:19, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here is my understanding of the situation: In general, works based on, inspired by, or incorporating PD materials can attract copyright status in many situations. In this case, I used the PD image as a basis for the vector redrawing. The redrawing in vector form is more than just mechanical copying, since the svg file now has vector coordinates. Strictly speaking, it could be argued that my redrawing is copyrightable. But don't get me wrong, I have no intention of restricting use of the file in any way, I just used my default dual-license upload tags. Jeff Dahl (talk) 17:01, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting for a SVG. for the Egyptian deities Bast, Wadjet and Wepwawet/Upuaut.

[edit]

Greetings, I have a request: Please create an SVG. file for the deities Bast, Wadjet and Upuaut. For that, I have a few suggestion:

- Bast should be just like Sekhmet but with a brown, more domestic cat-looking face.

- The pair of cobra from your 'Egyptian Wings' would suffice for the image of Wadjet. Just add the Deshret/Red Crown of Lower Egypt on her head and she is ready to go!

- Wepwawet/Upuaut should be like just Anubis (both were originally potrayed as jackal-headed), but with white of grey fur. You might also want to slightly change the frame of Upuaut's face to make him more 'Wolf-like'

Hi to Jeff Dahl- question about the Hapi illustration

[edit]
Hapi, shown as a pair of genies symbolically tying together upper and lower Egypt

Hi, Jeff,

Your illustration is wonderful, and although I knew it was on wikipedia, it took me awhile to find it (I finally googled "commons egyptian hieroglyphic hapi nile" for images and found it). In the process of looking over the photos of sandstone images similar to your drawing, I am left wondering where you got the details of your drawing, in particular the two stems on each side rising to the knot in the center, and the segmentation of the objects at the bottom of the central column. The images I saw appeared to have one stem on each side, where the image had not been destroyed below the waist, and I could not make out details in the objects at the bottom of the column.

I was very excited to see two stems in your illustration. I am in conversation with a friend who sent me your illustration, and we are speculating that the picture has not only to do with breath (the lungs, trachea), but also to do with the sacrum and the spine. The two stems in your image correspond nicely with the ilio-lumbar ligaments, which I personally believe are central to an understanding of the connection between the pulmonary respiration and the cranial-sacral respiration.

Can you direct me to your sources both with regard to the segmentation of the bottom "lungs" and with regard to the two stems on each side below the waist?

thank you very much; yours truly,

MarkF

Glad you like the drawing. I have the original photo of the relief but I can't remember exactly what site it came from; it contains all the original details. It is classic new kingdom though, possibly Ramesses II vintage. A similar drawing is here: [1]. There are a number of variations on this same theme, with different arrangements and loopings of the stems. The central column I believe is similar to the nfr hieroglyph which is composed of the windpipe and heart. Other than that I don't know if I can speculate, but the theme of tying together the two kingdoms is obvious. If I come across the original I'll post the information here. File:Flag of Kyrgyzstan.svg

[edit]

Hi Jeff

You changed the flag on 17:59, 8 March 2008 with the comment "According to http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/kg.html, rays should be touching" I just looked it up, and only nocitced the statement "the diameter of the red disk that is touching the rays from the inside is 54, ...", so nothing about a yellow ring between the touching rays and the red inside which you inserted. I wonder strongly why and how you could define the thickness/width of this yellow ring? If I hear no reply I will reconstruct the flag according to the construction sheets availible on this page, which means the yellow ring has thickness 0. :-/ I'm curious of your answer. Hi Jeff,

I'm not well versed in Wiki-editing so I hope this message finds it's way to you. I'd like to edit your Bennu_Bird.svg drawing for use as a logo for the new restaurant I'm opening called "Benu Bistro". In Canada. (Rebranding and recreating ourselves after our previous attempt fell flat). I just want to make sure that I do so with your blessing. I'd be happy to give online attribution to you, but if the image ends up on flyers or business cards or menus or signs... I would just feel more comfortable knowing that you were ok with me using it in that capacity.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tallbaldpeter (talk • contribs) 21:38, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
