Map update
[edit]Hi Jebbles - thanks for making File:Gavia immer "common loon" map.svg! It is however a bit out of date, as Great Northern Divers no longer breed in Svalbard (and were only ever occasional breeders there) [ref: European Breeding Bird Atlas 2, 2020]. Could you edit the map to remove Svalbard from the breeding range, please? Also best to remove 'common loon' from the filename as it is linguistically divisive ;-) Thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:20, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
@MPF: Definitely! I was using the IUCN as a reference for the most part. This is still new to me I am learning haha! Do they linger around as a non-breeding, year round or migratory range at all? Easy to edit. :) Jebbles (talk) 17:31, 31 July 2021 (UTC) (edit to add ping just in case)
- Thanks! Easy to edit if you have svg-editing software, which I don't! I think Iceland is the only area they are present all year, and even there, they move from lakes on to the sea, so not really resident. I don't know if any winter on the Great Lakes, that's another possibility worth checking. - MPF (talk) 21:22, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- @MPF: I don't believe they winter here near the Great Lakes from my experience/knowledge, as most of the lakes freeze up quite a bit. Right before things start to freeze up they tend to disappear. I'm right near lake Ontario and seeing one on lake O is pretty rare, seeing one in the winter on lake O is like one in a million and I'd be concerned! I believe lake O is one of the last/least likely to freeze if I'm not mistaken (because of our stinky cities). A quick search of the good ol' Google and I don't believe they use the great lakes for winter. I'll be updating the map for Svalbard though! :) Jebbles (talk) 22:02, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- Super, thanks! While I'm on, a quick tip on categories: add each map to just two categories, the relevant species category, and the most relevant distribution map category (category tree starts at Category:Bird distribution maps, work your way down through that by the scientific names. I've done the maps you've already made, have a look at them for where they are now :-) Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 22:19, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- Yes! That helps a ton, I'll definitely do it like that from now on. :) Thank you so much!! Jebbles (talk) 22:24, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

Spinus tristis map.svg
[edit]Hi! It looks you forgot to include a small population from Newfoundland on your map. It's present both on IUCN and Birds of the World maps; anyway both of these maps are not the same and they look a little different than yours. I would choose the one from IUCN because the BotW map lacks a breeding population from western USA which is shown for example here. Pikador (talk) 11:55, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
Colaptes auratus map
[edit]Hello Jebbles, I took it upon myself to update the Colaptes auratus map, as I was asked to do so as the map editor. I hope I haven't offended you. --Cephas (talk) 14:38, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Absolutely! No worries at all. I have been busy and haven't been on Wikipedia much. ALL improvements to Wikis are great improvements indeed, and you make phenomenal maps. :) Jebbles (talk) 11:25, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
