Regarding your revert in COM:HISTMERGE/Requests
Hello, Jdx, regarding your revert: Insert {{subst:DNAU}}. I could do his on my own, of course, but maybe you would rather set a shorter time period – and if I’d set it you perhaps would wonder why this section did not get archived despite everything would be solved. This said I would love to see a reaction of yours in Commons talk:History merging and splitting#Current admin volunteers (I am still convinced the best would be to delete this section). — Speravir – 19:13, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

- @Alexis Jazz: No, you did nothing wrong. Because you undid your own change, I made my life easier and just reverted to version from 23rd December 2017 using popups. That's why you were notified. --jdx Re: 07:58, 2 June 2019 (UTC)
Hello. I have posted some requests related to flags on the request. However, there has been no recent response, and some of these have been pushed for more than a month. Please carefully review and upload the files you requested. For reference, I have once again asked for something that someone else has already posted about the flag of Bolivia. --Tcfc2349 (talk) 11:37, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Ciao JDX,
As results of further research, I came to believe that the current Bolivian Coat of arms >> is wrong.
The evidence is the official Bolivian coat of arms >> from web site Ministerio de la presidencia de la Republica de Bolivia. See also (for better particulars): Gaceta Oficial.
According to this new and correct coat of arms, I made the new related svg version (for flags and coat of arms), listed below:
It is possible (please) overwrite the files abovementioned over the following:
My new versions, as shown by evidences, are more right than current versions.
Ciao and thank you!
P.S.: warning, my versions are different compared to user-vandal Tio Dari's old versions and should not be confused with the old versions! My svg design for "condor" (for example) is more elegant, the script "Bolivia" uses font Dejavu supported by commons >> png image=svg image (old version: Bitstream, not supported). Finally, my svg image details are more accurate than old versions.
User talk:FDRMRZUSA (18 April 2019; 15,45 UTC+1).
- Breaking news: restored yesterday old version of Bolivian coat of arms. But this old version presents a bit of a problem:
- 1: the script "BOLIVIA" in the shield uses font "Bitstream" not supported, as a result the png image not = svg image (verify please);
- 2: the condor size is disproportionate (too big) to the shield (see official Bolivian coat of arms above);
- 3: the coat of arms design, in particular the condor design is not excellent;
>> My new versions, as shown by evidences, are more right than current versions and have an design improved.
Ciao Jan and HAPPY EASTER!!!!

Hello.
Can you add « Category:Lake Awasa » in File:Malachite kingfisher (Corythornis cristatus stuartkeithi).jpg?
I am a new user who has done few edits; that is why I cannot add a category or edit in protected pages yet.
Thank you.

- Thanks for merging
- can you please check if I merged correctly, or if I forgot something (I'm a new admin)
- If I want to merge files, can I just do it, or should I announce it on Commons:History_merging_and_splitting/Requests or ask a second one (one person can easily be wrong)

- 2. @JoKalliauer: File:Bayesian Calculus Summary.svg doesn't seem to be fully fixed – overlapping texts. Do File:2016 Angola and DR Congo yellow fever outbreak.svg and File:Mt Etna system cross section.svg still contain errors? W3C validator doesn't complain about them.
- 3. I haven't seen any recommendation that assistance of a second person or announcement on COM:HMS is needed. So just do it.
- --jdx Re: 08:07, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- 2a) File:Bayesian Calculus Summary.svg I originally just fixed the rendering-bug, but I did not change the content, but now I changed the overlapping text.
- 2b) File:2016 Angola and DR Congo yellow fever outbreak.svg and File:Mt Etna system cross section.svg are both marked as valid? Therfore I do not understand your question. Maybe you mean {{Rsvg bug}}, but validation is independent on bugs. And the option is overwritten (

) with a workaround. - — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 20:47, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
Wiki Loves Monuments 2019

to your userpage!Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in the United States. Thanks to people like you it was a great success, with over 1,900 people contributing over 10,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. If you haven't seen the winners yet, be sure to check them out here.
I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information. Just like last year, you'll be able to upload your photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).
If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2018, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:15, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

to your userpage!September 30th is the last day to upload photos for Wiki Loves Monuments! We're thrilled that the United States has almost reached 4,000 contributions so far this year. Of these images, ~370 (~9%) have already been used to help illustrate Wikipedia articles and pages on other wiki projects, which is fantastic.
If you've already made a photo contribution this year, thanks so much! If you have any last-minute photos of U.S. historical sites to upload and enter into the contest, today's the day to do it. Check out the United States event page for more information. Judging will take place throughout the month of October, after which the top-ten national finalists will be announced in early November.
If you've traveled and taken photos of monuments in non-US countries, you can see if those countries are also participating here.
As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 05:49, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

File tagging File:Oj sachy.jpg
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Oj sachy.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Oj sachy.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Question Regarding Image Captions
Hi Jan,
I noticed you reverted an edit to a caption on an image. Would mind helping me understand why?
The caption removed was a single sentence describing what was carved on the image.
Many thanks,
Louis Waweru Talk 05:04, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Louis Waweru: Because this sentence actually says almost nothing about the image. For an observer who can see the caption but not the image (e.g. a search engine) it is completely meaningless. A much better caption would be e.g. Original coconut on which the rescue message was inscribed by John F. Kennedy to rescue the crew of the PT-109. See first paragraphs of Commons:File captions. --jdx Re: 06:19, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Topical
I see you did here. I doubt that the project has a lot to benefit when a map of the world highlighting French-language areas is captioned with such a not eminently enlightening and not self explanatory statement as «Français», period. Some UI layouts might even transclude it as «Français: Français», which is maybe even less non-clarifying and perhaps totally perplexing. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 15:56, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Tuvalkin: I'm sorry, but I'm not sure what do you mean. I'm not the person who added this nonsensical caption, I'm the person who removed it. --jdx Re: 16:19, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- I’m so sorry for the mess — this filepage’s history shows that both you and me removed nonsensical captions; I was mislead by the notification service, which flagged your edit as a reversion of my edit (which was the latest), and not, as it was, as a reversal of a previous edit. I should have not relied in the Notifications and had carefully looked at the filepage history — I apologize. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 16:32, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Tuvalkin: You and others "in the middle" were notified because I used popups to restore version from 9th August. --jdx Re: 17:31, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Wiki Science Competition 2019
Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.
If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.
Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Infoboxy i defaultsorty
Witam.
- Category:Zdzisław Dziadulski - infobox podaje że zmarł w 1914 tyle że to błąd - został zamordowany w Katyniu — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.8.108.198 (talk) 17:37, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- Category:Zbigniew Brochwicz-Lewiński - kolejny problem z userem z Ukr - Brochwicz to herb szlachecki - Lewiński to nazwisko rodowe - powinien być skategoryzowany pod "L" ale przysłowiowy pies ogrodnika wie lepiej — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 77.8.108.198 (talk) 20:04, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
Na razie tyle. Dzięki za ewentualną pomoc. 77.8.108.198 17:15, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
Category:Zdzisław Dziadulski – poprawiłem, {{Wikidata infobox}} pobiera dane z Wikidata (jak nazwa wskazuje) i tam należy poprawiać takie rzeczy; ktoś błędnie wprowadził datę śmierci w maju 2016 roku: d:Special:Diff/328344247. Dwóm pozostałym kategoriom przyjrzę się za chwilę. --jdx Re: 21:02, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- Poprawiłem Krzyżowskiego i Knoll-Kownackiego. --jdx Re: 12:00, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Gentile Jdx,
Grazie ancora e a presto,
Lorenzo Losa (msg) 10:32, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [3]
Changes later this week
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [4]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [5]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [6]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 March. It will be on all wikis from 5 March (calendar).
Future changes
- The developers are working on a new interface to solve edit conflicts on talk pages. You can give feedback. [7]
- There is a vote on the creation of a new user group called abuse filter manager. The vote runs from March 1 to March 31 on Meta.
-
wgMFSpecialCaseMainPage
was used for the mobile site. It was deprecated in 2017. It will stop working in April. Wikis should see if they use it. If they do they should fix it. You can read more and ask for help. This affects 183 wikis. There is a list. [8]

Helpǃ
Hi Jdx, I got myself into a problem I think.
I wanted to upload a bunch of 'fine art pictures' from Bonhams, the root files seem to be jfif files. Apparently (I now find out) all that was required, was to change the extension from jfif to jpg, and then upload. Correct?
Just to make it worse, earlier than that, after reading the policy on it, I got the wrong end of the stick and converted the jfif files using GIMP to png files and then onto jpg, and uploaded both. So what now? Should I request their deletion and then re-upload afresh? Changing the extension, only, makes for a much smaller file.
I also found out (ignoring for the moment the jfif mistake) that I should have translated them to tiff and then to jpg as opposed to png. Correct?
As it happens in the Bonhams site if you inspect the image, you find a jpg address, that gives me a jfif file. However if I double click on the image, it will download a png. Am I right in assuming that I'm better making a png from the jfif myself? Of course to do that I would have an xcf in my possession.
In an ideal world I would just upload the jfif and a version changing the extension to jpg. However commons wont accept jfif's.
What do you recommend I do here? What files should i be uploading for an image?
Anyway grateful for your thoughts... Broichmore (talk) 09:51, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
