Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT (talk) 05:54, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Categorization of audio files
[edit]Hello! Please take care to categorize your audio files correctly. Some time ago I already told somebody else about this problem. There you can read what to do. Best regards, Hedwig von Ebbel (talk) 22:55, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip. I did not realize that the files would not be sorted properly when simply adding them to Category:German pronunciation. I'm about to provide many thousands of sound files for german Wiktionary, and I'm currently using the commonist tool to upload the files. As it is, it will be impossible to type ... each single time by hand. Is it possible to have some bot do this (for me)? Or is there any other way to conveniently upload many files with the precise category? Jakob.scholbach (talk) 23:27, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, doing this by hand is a really annoying job (I know what I'm talking about. I've already done that with quite a lot of files.) and unfortunately even won't work because of the "De-" at the beginning of each file's name. This might be a job for a bot, but concerning bots I'm not an expert at all. Maybe somebody mentioned on that page can help you. Hedwig von Ebbel (talk) 12:45, 4 January 2010 (UTC).
File descriptions
[edit]See partial tidy up for placement of image description. Note AWB keyword %%pagename%% to write directly to file, which I only recently found out about. There was a typo and I should have said and not , which writes to the page only after saving the page. Snowmanradio (talk) 20:41, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Template
[edit]Re: Template:Aussprache. It appears as . Is this a German language template? I guess that the "Bälle" (or words in a similar position) need indexing too, because it indexes the category. Snowmanradio (talk) 14:04, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like a German language template. But I think the way we had previously is just as good. Jakob.scholbach (talk) 19:32, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
