Hallo Ikiwaner! --Dschwen (talk) 15:01, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

use of shot for Background in TV advert
Good day to you sir,
I was searching the web for a free panoramic shot of Spitzkoppe, Namibia and I came across your superb picture on wikipedia! We are filming an abandoned truck for a local advert on a mine dump (supposed to simulate a "desert") and we want to put a shot in the Background which suggests Namibia. We really have no Budget, and the shot would be in the distance with the truck in the Foreground. It will be shown on youtube initially as a Viral Advert Campaign - would it be possible to use your shot, and if so would you charge us? I was not sure of the GNU licencing so I thought it best to get in touch.
Please let us know if you can accomodate us.

Tanzania
Hi Ikiwaner,
I was in Tanzania August 4-14, with my wife and daughter. Had Safari for 6 days and 2 days in Zanzibar. Other days was rest and transfers. I saw your Black Rhino photo. We where not lucky enough to see it. It is a great capture. You have other nice photos too. I had a chance to look at them. I have a lot of photos. But more work is going in organizing them for upload than taking the photos themselves. 80% of birds is complete. I am not good at plants. Predator mammals are identified. But antelopes need work.
Our Safari Tracks on Google maps: [1] Day1 [2] Day2 [3] Day3 [4] Day4 [5] Day5 [6] Day6
I saw you wrote Tanzania my second life. Are you there for work or Safari?
Regards, --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 22:47, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Nevit, I hope you and your family enjoyed your trip. Taxing and uploading and categorizing all the pictures is really a bunch of work. I'm going to work here from October. Before I had one month off and two months of language training. Regards --Ikiwaner (talk) 07:53, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
- Tnx. The trip was experience rich.I had the chance to observe how precious sources such as land, water are for ecosystem. And how we humans are competing with other organisms over resources.
- Our guide told us that the bush was set fired by National parks administration to control TseTse fly. File:Serengeti Thomson-Gazelle3.jpg I created a category of images here Category:Remains of bushfire Serengeti If true, they are making a lot of damage, without any chance of eradicating the fly.
- I wish you nice days during you stay in Tanzania.

Regarding your comment, I've now cropped it a bit and blurred the background. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:11, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for trying to improve your work. However I can hardly see a difference. There are still poles and bars in the background and a cut off text. I was more thinking about a background like this. Sorry --Ikiwaner (talk) 15:23, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Hi, Thank you for nominating File:Isfahan_1210945_nevit.jpg for QI, and considering for FP. I added some description. After thinking I remembered the picture was taken in a hotel cafeteria. The fact that it is taken inside a hotel might make it questionable in western copyright standards. But I am not aware of strict copyright rules in Iran. There is also a slight blur. Hard to pass FP IMO.
I am going to ask you about the bird on your nice photo of African buffalo. My books speak about yellow billed ox-pecker Category:Buphagus africanus [7], living symbiotically on African buffaloes. But this one seems entirely different. May be juvenile or different sex, or juvenile but the bill seems entirely different to me. I have one photo of this bird and had difficulty identifying it. --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 20:23, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Nevit, congratulations to your lamp picture which I think is much better photography than the boring ducks we just promoted. However the harsh decline on QI discurages me from a nomination on FPC :-(
- Thanks for taxing the bird on the Buffalo. I think it's a Wattled Starling too. Not that many birds sit on a buffalo's back. Feel free to nominate it whereever you wish. --Ikiwaner (talk) 18:53, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- NOP. To my knowledge it is the only picture of both on commons. I made a nomination for COM:VI, here: Commons:Valued_image_candidates/Serengeti_Bueffel1.jpg It can be a FPC too.
- About harsh criticism, it is not a problem to me. But it can be discouraging to newbies. At 2008 when VI image project started I tried to summarize my thoughts about what makes a picture valuable here: File:Valued_image.svg VI started because easy subjects like ducks and buildings and sharp high-res snapshots go easily through QI process while hard to capture subjects are rejected frequently. It is a known issue. --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 21:55, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- ...which doesn't make it any better. Thanks for the nomination for VI. Until now I had no experience with VI so I'm watching this with interest. --Ikiwaner (talk) 16:49, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- VI nomination did not go as I expected... sorry --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 11:44, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Since when the frak did Commons become just about providing a single image for each en.wp article? You don't want me to nominate more of these, fine, I'm done. I just live in hope on the basis that since some DID get promoted others might. We are not slaves to en.wp, I don't give a crap if someone PRINTS the damn things. But by your logic we only need one photo of the statue of liberty, one photo of Tom Cruise, one photo of the Ford Mustang, because, oh, people won't print the others. I cry at night at the knowledge that no one appreciates those photos. Truly. Our job here is to provide a repository of free media, and that includes MULTIPLE photos OF THE SAME SUBJECT so that PEOPLE CAN CHOOSE WHAT THEY WANT. What you want from a picture of a cat may be different from what someone else wants, so we need more than one photo of a cat. If you think the other photos are useless, then go nominate them for deletion and we'll see. -mattbuck (Talk) 08:33, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
- We are no slaves of en.wp and I as a non native english speaker never said something like this. However commons is a Project with a scope, unlike maybe Flickr. And serving as a media repository for Wikimedia projects is one of two aims. I appreciate your work of uploading several photos of that singer and I'll never nominate one of them for deletion. However it's my personal philosophy that making a selection before publishing pictures adds value to the repository because otherwise this work has to be done by every single visitor instead of just the photographer. This does not mean we need just one photo of the statue of liberty. But I prefer just one or two pictures of the statue with the same point of view, the same light and the same crop. I hope I could expain myself. --Ikiwaner (talk) 11:14, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, sorry to go off on one like that. -mattbuck (Talk) 13:46, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Hi, you file Serengeti_Kongoni2.jpg has a pink cast. I guess it has raised during processing. It is a nice photo, so if decide to nominate it somewhere please correct the cast. --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 08:45, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Nevit, thank you for pointing this out and also for promoting the first image! I noticed this when uploading but I did no further investigations. So let's catch up on this. As we can see in the metadata (watch
crs:Temperature
andcrs:Tint
) File:Serengeti_Kongoni1.jpg was processed with a white balance of 5100K and a tint of +2. File:Serengeti_Kongoni2.jpg is processed with 5000K and a tint of +3. When I first waw this I thought the colours must be right. But then I noticed that Kongoni2 is shot contre-jour with sunshine and Kongoni1 with diffuse light. I would have to process Kongoni2 twice with different WB for the animal and the background. I'm not shure if it's worth the time since it's just average to me. --Ikiwaner (talk) 10:41, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Hello, You declined the pic above because (in particular) of "rule of three". I've corrected it, and the slight tilt too. Thank you for your review !--Jebulon (talk) 10:15, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
- Done. --Ikiwaner (talk) 10:52, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Topi
Hi, According to the book Mammals of Africa, Damaliscus corrigum is native to NW Africa, while Damaliscus lunatum subsp. jimela is native to Tanzania. Corrigum is a Topi with bright yellow color, I just discovered this when uploading my Topies. --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 11:40, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for backing up taxonomy with facts. I put the topi in two categories because there seem to be two systematics. According to Wolson and Reeder 2005 ISBN 0-8018-8221-4 this is Damaliscus korrigum while Burchell 1823 refer to it as Damaliscus lunatus topi. In German there is just one article while in en:wp there are t w o. --Ikiwaner (talk) 15:26, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
