Goodies, tips, and tricks Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities. You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads. Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States - Thank You!

Hi there! Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States. We're excited to see people uploading thousands of photos from all over the country! You and others have collectively uploaded 4,929 photos so far, all of which are viewable at Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States (sorted by state).

We encourage you to continue contributing through the rest of the month. Uploading your photos of monuments isn't the only way to contribute, however. If you're interested, we have compiled a list of auxiliary ways to contribute - which include improving Wikipedia's coverage of historic and cultural sites, as well as finding existing free photos that can be shared on the Commons. While these contributions don't count towards the contest, we are still keeping track of them and they are great ways to contribute to the spirit of the project.

If you are interesting in contributing to Wikipedia, WikiProject National Register of Historic Places is also great place to start. The WikiProject showcases the work that has been done so far in covering NRHP sites, and can also help you find articles that need improving.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States – Results!

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

New versions

Hello, Hmlarson. I saw you uploaded a "new version" of File:2020-02-23 Arsenal WFC v Lewes L.F.C. 164.jpg, but this is not the correct way of uploading a new file. Please see Commons:Overwriting existing files, where you will see that such substantial crops should not be used to overwrite the original file. In such cases the crop should be uploaded as a new file. The CropTool can be used to easily upload a crop as a new file.

In your User history I see some more similar cases, that I will also undo. In the past, others have done the same, f.i. File:20170719 WEURO ENG SCO 5878.jpg. Please do not uloaded such crops as a new version in the same file page anymore. Greeting, Eissink (talk) 20:27, 14 October 2020 (UTC).

Strange User:Eissink, I was simply following the upload link from the image page which autofills the info on the subsequent page. Maybe that should be evaluated and revised so it actually follows the preferred method and saves you a ton of time. Hmlarson (talk) 20:31, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

I don't know about that, I have never used it and am not even aware of the possibility – could you give an example? I'd be surprised if there wouldn't be a possibility to upload the crop as a new file, because this is just not how it works. Eissink (talk) 20:33, 14 October 2020 (UTC).

I see now that some of your overwritings concern your own photographs. In such cases it is of course okay to upload what you think is a better version. The file on my watchlist that triggered my reaction, is a file from a Flickr-user: in such cases the original should not be altered (at least not with significant cropping). I saw a picture of another photographer also. I will undo my reversals of your own images, sorry. Eissink (talk) 20:38, 14 October 2020 (UTC).

User:Eissink and for the record for anyone wanting to address this issue...., to replicate:

1. Go to [1] at bottom of page (within External links section), click the link within Commons cat box.
2. Click on any image
3. On next page, click More details button at bottom right
4. In the File history section (after table), click the "Upload a new version of this file link"
5. What does it autofill in the destination filename field?

I see what you mean, but there is a warning to keep the upload in line with the policy, which is exactly the one that I linked above, Commons:Overwriting existing files, which makes clear, I think, that huge crops should not replace the original. There is way too much buried policy to read here. An effective solution and efficient use of time and resources would be to not autopopulate the field. Is it possible for you to rename my version with "_cropped" at the end? Hmlarson (talk) 21:10, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

I have uploaded a new crop using CropTool. You can find CropTool in the sidebar on the left. Default is to automatically upload it as a new file, which then includes the categories of the original, as well as the license etc., and it leaves a link to original and vice verse. Default is also the extension "(cropped)". I encourage you to try it, it is really convenient, you only need to log in once and then it will be always available. Good luck.
