Removing history-map categories
[edit][1] - Hi, what is the rationale behind removing the categories of so many files? --Enyavar (talk) 16:21, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello @Enyavar. Because I added the category "Maps of the Hittite Empire in the 17th-century BC". What is the problem, I could not understand it. Because this category is a subcategory of "Maps showing 17th-century BC history", I removed them to avoid from overcategorisation. --Gargarapalvin (talk) 17:22, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, and that is appropriate for maps which only show the Hittites. But the maps show the context of the whole region in the respective centuries, instead. The maps also display the Assyrian Empire, the Mittani, the Egyptians, the Minoans, etc. --Enyavar (talk) 19:20, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- Then, you can create the same categories for other states shown on these maps. I cannot see any fault in my changes. If that map shows the Hittite Empire in the 17th-century BC, I can categorise it in this way. There are millions of examples for this situation. Any Wikimedia file can be shared by more than 2 similar categories. Solution is creation of, for example, "Maps of the Assyrian Empire in the 17th-century BC category. Sincerely. :) --20:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC) Gargarapalvin (talk) 20:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- Please check out this edit: it's a picture with Kamala Harris, a person who is in Category:Politicians. So I move her from "Politicians" to "Kamala Harris" (to prevent Overcat). However, that action is disregarding all other politicians in the room. Our help page on Overcat is adressing this situation in Commons:Categories#Exception_for_images_with_more_categorized_subjects#this clause, so I hope you're not surprised when I just re-add the categories into the century-maps. --Enyavar (talk) 09:21, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Theatre lobbies
[edit]You recently performed a controversial move of Category:Theater lobbies in the United States by declaring the original title a misspelling. Please don't do that — beyond making it hard to revert the change, you have also tagged the original for speedy deletion rather than making it a category redirect, as would have been appropriate were the move correct. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 03:44, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Populated places in the Aegean Region by neighbourhood has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Hi. Please reread the guidance about moving/renaming categories. You recent rename stretched the truth when it said it was fixing a misspelling. You also created a level of inconsistency between the category name and subcategories, plus had district and province with similar name which is the whole reason about having the discussion. I have reverted. If there is something that needs moving, then please have that conversation and reach a consensus. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:49, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi. After I noticed your intervention, I have stopped continuing. Thanks for information. @Billinghurst --Görkem Yavuz (talk) 10:52, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
People in Ankara
[edit]Hello Görkem Yavuz, in my free time I try to add categories to images without categories. I have a searchquery for Ankara. At the moment I found there tree images of a men with coordinates in Ankara. You revert my category two times. So why? This man was photographed in Ankara. I search with google maps the coordinate for more prove. And yes it is a location named "Ankara Demirspor Wedding Halls and Social Facility". You find also images with this kind of background and the men look like a guest on a wedding. So can you please set a better category for this 3 images. Maybe Category:People in Ankara. - I only found this images and others over the coordinates around Ankara. And insert in all of this images the main category of the city. So the local Wikipedians can set better categories in there city. - See also my searchqueries for other big cities. Best greetings from Dresden, Germany. --sk (talk) 15:01, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
Images of Ankara revert
[edit]Hi. Can you explain your mass revert? Your whole "Ankara by medium" that leads to "images of Ankara" Etc. Etc. thing is just circular, makes no sense, and just leads to over categorization for various reasons that I don't really have the time or energy to go into right now except to say that 99% of the media on here is images so having a special "images of" category for a city is totally redundant. Same goes for something like a "by medium" category. That's not even getting into the fact that "images" isn't a medium to begin with either. But even if they were such a category would still be totally useless over categorization. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 06:18, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Adamant1. First of all, thanks for your interest and effort for contrubuting Wikimedia. You claim that "Category:Ankara by medium" is an overcategorisation but then you decided to delete "Category:Images of Ankara" which is a subcategory of the first one and consists of eight different subcategories. If you really think that "Category:Ankara by medium" is an useless page, you could have start a discussion and nominate the page for deletion. Remarking everything for a speedy deletion is not a proper way to do this. Moreover, both "Category:X by medium" and "Category:Images of X" are common categories for cities. At this point, your concern becomes more general thing rather than being specific to Ankara. That's why I suggest a discussion. But I do not think/agree with your idea that these are overcategorisation. Those pages exist for eliminating the types of media related to cities. Have a nice day. --Görkem Yavuz (talk) 07:33, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- If you really think that "Category:Ankara by medium" is an useless page, you could have start a discussion and nominate the page for deletion. You created "Category:Ankara by medium" after I nominted "Category:Images of Ankara" for speedy deletion. This literally is that discuss and I'm telling you it's overcategorization. I'm not going to start a CfD for a category that we both seem to agree is over categorization just becuase you don't want to discuss a category you created on your own talk page.
- Remarking everything for a speedy deletion is not a proper way to do this. I nominated one category for speedy deletion and for a specific reason. You'd have to agree that one category isn't "everything." I don't disagree that there's a more general concern with "images of" categories for cities, but there's specific reasons that it's particularly bad in this case. I'm not going to start a discussion about the whole category chain just because of one subcat that I think is particularly pointless. I'm more then entitled to nominate a single category for deletion based on the merits (or lack of them) of that category without having to start a general conversation about similar categories in general. That's not how this works.
- I'm not sure what your talking about with "x by medium" though. As far as I know there aren't "cities by medium" categories. You certainly didn't put Category:Ankara by medium in one. So can you point out where there's similar categories for cities? --Adamant1 (talk) 07:49, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
