"Parent categories"

[edit]

Hi, Ferien. Here on Commons, the parent category template redirects to {{MetaCat}}. That template requires a sort criterion parameter to indicate how the subcategories are grouped. I just changed what you added to Category:Streets in England by county to include that parameter.

In case you didn't know, the template {{CatCat}} has a similar purpose. With the metacat template, each subcategory is for all media for one instance of whatever the sort criterion says. For example, Category:Streets in Bedfordshire is for any and all streets in Bedfordshire that Commons has media for.

{{CatCat}} is used for categories that should contain only categories, but when each subcategory is for only one thing. Examples of this are:

There are other examples, but maybe you get the idea.

One wrinkle in all this is the "by name" categories. Some of them, like Category:Hotels by name, are metacats. Others, like Category:People by name, are not. It just depends on what the content is. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:37, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realise that, thanks for letting me know. :) I'll do that when I add {{MetaCat}} templates in future. --Ferien (talk) 21:41, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I hate you

If you do actually want to edit Wikimedia sites and potentially get unlocked then telling me to fuck off is not the best idea... --Ferien (talk) 22:09, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

can i be forgiven by the wiki commnty after a month? Wikihelper2024 (talk) 23:57, 16 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It is probably best for you to not edit for 6 months–a year before appealing to stewards. --Ferien (talk) 06:52, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks and it seems like an apology isnt the best idea rn because im met with well deserved backlash 172.78.190.61 21:14, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On achieving the file mover rights. I saw you when I checked mine in it. :-) Haoreima (talk) 20:44, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Haoreima: Thanks, and same to you. :) I haven't talked to you on simplewiki or anywhere for a while, how are things? --Ferien (talk) 20:46, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As of now, I am pretty fine. I am working more frequently in Regular English wiki, but I regularly return to Simple English wiki, which I consider as my "home wiki" ❤❤❤ (exactly like Meitei wiki). Haoreima (talk) 20:50, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Haoreima: yeah - Sometimes I find myself editing other projects but always end up going back to simplewiki :) --Ferien (talk) 20:53, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

File:Seal of Huntertown, Indiana.jpg

[edit]

I've long been confused about cities and flags, as for why some are on Commons and some are only on enwiki. But I'm curious how File:Seal of Huntertown, Indiana.jpg qualifies as being public domain. How can "I created this work entirely by myself." be accurate, unless they're an employee of the city and they designed the seal? Kk.urban (talk) 18:20, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kk.urban, I too was confused by why that specific seal was public domain, I've done a little more research into it. Firstly, the seal on https://www.huntertown.org/ is slightly different to the one on File:Seal of Huntertown, Indiana.jpg. It could be a combination of that and them creating something like it themselves. Or, they could indeed be the creator of the seal. --Ferien (talk) 18:29, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your investigation. It does indeed look different. I wonder if the color was originally the same (maybe the city changed their seal?) It seems a bit strange that someone would change a seal to make it public domain and then use the official symbol to represent the city. To be honest I have the same questions about almost all logos, seals, and flags for any municipality that are available here. Kk.urban (talk) 18:33, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Kk.urban, for what it's worth, that file ended up getting deleted from commons. --Ferien (talk) 12:19, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
