Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:47, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Trafic_sound_copia.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Trafic_sound_copia.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

File:Trafic sound copia.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

- Please respect my request to keep discussions where they started, as this makes conversations easier to follow. I am watching this page, so I will see responses made here. Also, please sign your entries.
- I haven't deleted anything. If you look at the deletion logs, you'll see that the files were deleted by Fastily because you did not address the problems mentioned above. Specifically, the problems were:
- File:50-wealltogether copia.jpg: You did not provide a source for the photos used in this montage. Obviously, this was not entirely your own work, as you claimed. In fact, I'm not even convinced you put together the montage yourself. It looks like you just found it in a blog post. Please see Commons:Image casebook#Internet images.
- File:Arena has 123.JPG: You did not provide a source for the photos used in this montage. Obviously, this was not entirely your own work, as you claimed.
- File:Los+Saicos+03saicos.jpg: You claimed that the source was http://lossaicos.com/Galeria/Pages/1964-1966.html, that "Los Saicos" was the author (photographer) and that you were the copyright holder. There was no information on why you would be the copyright holder if you were not the author.
- File:Cclub.jpg: You claimed that the source was http://www.cementerioclub.net/ (I don't see the montage or the photos used in it on that page), that "Cementerio Club" was the author (photographer) and that the copyright holder had explicitly released it under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. There was no evidence of that.
- File:Jaimedelgadoaparicio.JPG: You claimed that you created this black and white photo of a person who died in 1983 and that you created it in 2012. That seems unlikely.
- File:Jaimedelgadoap.JPG: You claimed that this black and white photo of a person who died in 1983 was your own work, created in 2012, and that you were the copyright holder. That seems unlikely. Despite claiming that it was your own work, you claim that the author (photographer) was IncaRock[1]. That doesn't make any sense. I don't think this was your own work, I don't think you're the copyright holder, I don't think you are IncaRock, and I don't think IncaRock created this photo.
- File:Paxenvivo.JPG: You claimed that the source was "PAX", which is not a verifiable source, that "PAX" was the author (photographer) and that you were the copyright holder. There was no information on how you supposedly became the copyright holder.
- File:Laghonia71.JPG: Despite claiming that this was your own work and that you were the copyright holder, you also admitted in the author field that you got it from https://www.facebook.com/laghoniamca. Finding a file on the Internet does not make it yours.

- File:Themadsperu.JPG: Despite claiming that this was your own work and that you were the copyright holder, you claimed that the author (photographer) was "Tha Mad's". There was no information on how you supposedly became the copyright holder.

- Your claim above that the photos are in the public domain is a new one. The only file you had previously claimed to be in the public domain was File:Cclub.jpg (and that seems exceedingly unlikely to be true). In all other instances, you claimed that the files were not in the public domain, but protected by copyright, and that you were the copyright holder. Photos taken 40 years ago would typically be protected by copyright. In Peru and most other countries, copyright typically expires 70 years after the death of the author.
- If you still think that any of these deletions were not correct, you can discuss it with the deleting administrator or request undeletion. Don't expect anything to be undeleted unless you provide truthful and verifiable source, authorship and copyright information that shows the file is actually free.
