You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Please do not overwrite files

I noticed that you uploaded a file using the same name as another file, which already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you. The image under discussion is File:JohnKurthOfficeBuilding.jpg: What you should have done is change which file was used on the Wikipedia since you had already uploaded it as File:Kurth Brewery.jpg. The architectural work depicted in this photograph may be covered under United States copyright law (17 USC 120(a)), which states that architectural works completed after December 1, 1990 are protected. However, architectural copyright in the United States does not include the right to prevent the making, distributing, or public display of pictures, paintings, photographs, or other pictorial representations of the work. See COM:CRT/United States#Freedom of panorama for more information.

This law only applies to architectural works (such as buildings or other structures) and not other forms of 3D or 2D artwork such as sculptures, paintings, or posters. Images of these artworks taken in the US must be deleted unless they are in the public domain, or their presence is trivial.

Categorizating

I notice that your uploads are having categorization issues. For example, you took photographs at Beaver Dam Raceway. Excellent photographs, great job and they are appropriate for the topic (we have shared interests). I moved all of them to a category for the racetrack (Category:Beaver Dam Raceway). The issue is that when they get put in that category, they are automatically considered to be in the parent categories of Beaver Dam Raceway like Category:Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Category:Dodge County, Wisconsin, Category:Racing circuits in Wisconsin, etc. I notice that you added one category that I started to a duplicate category here. The city of Beaver Dam category had already been included in the category for Dodge County since it was included in Category:Populated places in Dodge County, Wisconsin. The technical term is Over-categorization and you can read why this is an issue there. Consider how large Category:Wisconsin would be if we included photographs from every city or county in it for example. When a topic becomes too big, the strategy is to break it down (diffusion) like we did long ago for Wisconsin by counties, buildings, populated places, etc.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 14 October 2024, 23:59:59 UTC.
