  • Bracket matching will be added to the CodeMirror syntax highlighter on the first wikis. The first wikis are German and Catalan Wikipedia and maybe other Wikimedia wikis. This will happen on 27 January. [3]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 January. It will be on all wikis from 28 January (calendar).

This is the announcement for the Project Grants program open call that started on January 11, with the submission deadline of February 10, 2021.
This first open call will be focussed on Community Organizing proposals. A second open call focused on research and software proposals is scheduled from February 15 with a submission deadline of March 16, 2021.

For the Round 1 open call, we invite you to propose grant applications that fall under community development and organizing (offline and online) categories. Project Grant funds are available to support individuals, groups, and organizations to implement new experiments and proven ideas, from organizing a better process on your wiki, coordinating a campaign or editathon series to providing other support for community building. We offer the following resources to help you plan your project and complete a grant proposal:

Mobile

Hi. My preferred wiki editing platform has for several years been desktop mode in Puffin Browser Pro on my iPad for multiple reasons. The past few weeks, I have been using desktop mode in Chrome on my Windows 10 laptop more for the GIMP, simultaneous videoconferencing, ability to edit whole pages, intact screen, and HDMI connection to my TV. @Jeff G.: , ah, I personally use either the Ecosia browser on my Elephone P8 Mini (Google Android), Microsoft Edge on a Microsoft Lumia 950 or Microsoft Lumia 950 XL (both use Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile), or in rare cases when I use my wife's phone for uploading Google Chrome on her Motorola One Macro. I notice that templates and pages both load and look differently in them. I couldn't see the "{{Kept}}" templates in "mobile view", but they are visible in "desktop view". I use the "advanced mobile" mode on every Wikimedia website so I see some more features, but unless I'm at the Dutch-language Wikipedia things like navigational templates or templates similar to "Kept" don't appear. There have been several Phabricator discussions about this in the past, but their view is generally disallowed in "mobile view" because of loading time and data (though I only use Wi-Fi, so I wouldn't be against changing the display options in the MediaWiki software). --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:48, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Vietnamese/Chinese cash coin

Hello! I've been scouring the Internet for hours trying to identify a coin of mine. I figured out that the characters are "Tri binh thanh bao" and plugging that into Google let me to a photo of yours. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:An16_Tri_Binh_thanh_bao_1ar_(12136815293).jpg is a link to your photo. Do you mind telling me how/if you were able to date it? So far all I've found is this photo from you and a listing on eBay that claims it came from the 17th century (although I have no idea how they would know that). I've been able to date most of my coins, but this one has been giving me trouble.

  • Tool of the week
    • Labelcleaner is a script by Andrew Gray used to clean up Wikidata labels/aliases/descriptions for a given language on a set of items.
  • Development
    • Continuing development on the first version of the Query Builder. It's starting to be able to do the first really meaningful queries now. Latest addition was the ability to negate conditions. Up next is the ability to connect conditions with OR instead of only AND as well as querying for quantities and ranges. You can follow along on the test system.
    • Exploring possible solutions for how to compare Wikidata's data against other databases to find and highlight mismatches automatically.
    • Added lexicographical data codes for a few languages: rkt, ctg (phab:T271589), and az-cyrl (phab:T265906)
    • Finished working on the issue of TypeError on a diff of a Wikidata talk page phab:T271402
    • Updated Wikidata unit conversion configuration (phab:T267644)
    • Fixed two last places where links in the the Query Service UI were not using Special:MyLanguage yet to redirect to the documentation page in the user's language (phab:T267656)
    • Pushing JSON dumps for Lexemes over the finish line (phab:T264883)
    • Working on showing an error when trying to save lemmas with invalid language codes (phab:T265783)
    • Wikibase Release Strategy
      • Investigated the release of Wikibase suite components not maintained by Wikimedia (phab:T271193)
